  • This study analyzed settlement condition changes of Chungcheong region's mountain area during 10 years, from 2001 to 2012. We performed factor analysis and cluster analysis of data from the 'Census for Mountain Area' carried out by the Korea Forest Service in 2001 and 2012. Factors 1, 2, 3, and 4 represent 'the superiority of non-agricultural income', 'the industrialized mountainous area', 'residential conveniences and benefits', and 'the use of forest resources', respectively. Clusters 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 are categorized as 'non-agricultural income', 'various mass social functions', 'production of forest products', 'industrialized mountainous region', and 'ordinary mountain region', respectively. We suggest that cluster 1 has potential for development and should be promoted as a possible tourist attraction by digging up geographically unique themes. Cluster 2 has great potential for development and needs planned management through the maintenance or expansion of existing infrastructure. Cluster 3 has potential for development with various high value added industries uncovered. Cluster 4 shows vitality as it holds plenty of more job opportunities than other regions. Cluster 5 is deteriorating as a mountainous region because of an aging population, and it urgently demands development. For a decade, 45 of the 60 regions belonged to a single category, which are now differentiated broadly into two types: Firstly, deterioration changes to potential development and Secondly, vitality is differentiated into potential development and deterioration.

  • This paper explores changing concept of city in the context of globalization with innovation city and examines the characteristics of innovation city along with regional and national competitiveness. It is agreed that construction of innovation city by relocation of public institutions for balanced development of the country has valid logic. However, there are weak possibilities of innovation within the innovation city. Further more it is not a proper solution for the level up of national and regional competitiveness through this policy. The main logic is that physical relocation of institutions do not guarantee innovation of region through integration into globalization network resulting from the scale difference between nation and globe. Rather this paper suggests that regional innovation policy should performed in accordance with regional conditions and for the better competitiveness of nation and region, decentralization of power is needed. Then a region could have connection with global pipeline based on endogenous development power.

  • This paper proposes a multi-level thresholding method for image segmentation using fuzzy clustering algorithm in transition region. Most of threshold-based image segmentation methods determine thresholds based on the histogram distribution of a given image. Therefore, the methods have difficulty in determining thresholds for real-image, which has a complex and undistinguished distribution, and demand much computational time and memory size. To solve these problems, we determine thresholds for real-image using fuzzy clustering algorithm after extracting transition region consisting of essential and important components in image. Transition region is extracted based on Inか entropy, which is robust to noise and is well-known as a tool that describes image information. And fuzzy clustering algorithm can determine optimal thresholds for real-image and be easily extended to multi-level thresholding. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method for performance.

  • One of the ways to achieve the principle of equal access for equal needs, availability and geographical accessibility of health care resources regardless of resident sites is important. The purpose of this paper is to measure socioeconomic inequities in distribution of health care resources among regions in the Republic of Korea (hereafter Korea). Data were extracted from regional statistics of National Health Insurance, Community Health Survey, Korea Social Science Data Archive, and Korean Statistical Information Services at the same period of 2009. The dependent variables were the number of health workforce and health care facilities in each region. The proxy indicator of regional socioeconomic status was local tax per person. To identify whether inequalities among regions, we examined the concentration index(CI) and indirectly standardized CI by controlling each region's demographics and need factors. Total observations were 232 districts in nationwide, and we analyzed separately Seoul(25 districts) and non-Seoul areas(207 districts). The standardized CI values of health care resources were positive(favoring the rich region) across the nation in almost all kinds of resources. Especially the number of specialist, dentist, dental clinics, clinics, oriental medical clinics, pharmacists, and pharmacies were statistically significantly favoring the rich region. But the CI for the number of long-term care hospitals, public health centers were negative(favoring the poor region). The tendency of CI presenting positive values were increased in Seoul area. But in the case of non-Seoul, the CI indexes were nearly zero. The results suggest that except the Seoul area, little regional socioeconomic-related inequalities were observed in the distribution of health care resources in Korea.

  • The synoptic, thermodynamic, and dynamic characteristics of a snowfall event that occurred in the Yeongdong region on March 1-2, 2021, were investigated. Surface weather charts, ERA5 reanalysis data, rawinsonde data, GK-2A satellite data, and WISSDOM data were used for analysis. The snow depth, exceeding 10 cm, was observed at four weather stations during the analysis period. The maximum snow depth (37.4 cm) occurred at Bukgangneung. According to the analysis of the weather charts, old and dry air was trapped within relatively warm, humid air in the upper atmosphere over the East Sea and adjacent Yeongdong region. This caused unstable atmospheric conditions that led to developing convective clouds and snowfall over Bukgangneung. In particular, based on the thermodynamic and kinematic vertical analysis, we suggest that strong winds attributable to the vertical gradient of potential temperature in the low layer and the development of convective instability due to cold advection played a significant role in the occurrence of snowfall in the Yeongdong region. These results were confirmed from the vertical analysis of the rawinsonde data.

  • Three-dimensional finite element model was made from adult skull to find desirable direction of retraction force to treat skeletal class II malocclusion. The retraction force of 400g was applied to the first molar. The direction of the force application was $23^{\circ}$ downward, parallel, $23^{\circ}$ upward and $45^{\circ}$ upward to the occlusal plane. The stress distribution and the displacement within the maxilla were analyzed by three-dimensional finite element method. The findings obtained were as follows: 1. Maxillary first molar was displaced posteriorly and inferiorly in $23^{\circ}$ downward, parallel, $23^{\circ}$ upward retraction but it was displaced posteriorly and superiorly in $45^{\circ}$ upward retraction. 2. ANS, A point and prosthion were moved posteriorly and inferiorly and pterygomaxillary fissure was moved posteriorly and superiorly. Clockwise rotation of maxilla occurred when retraction force was applied. 3. The degree of clockwise rotation of maxilla was greatest when the force was applied $23^{\circ}$ upward to the occlusal plane and was least when the force was applied $23^{\circ}$ downward to the occlusal plane. 4. Large tensile stress appeared in maxillary first molar and alveolar bone and the infraorbital region of maxilla when the force was applied $23^{\circ}$ downward to the occlusal plane. Tensile stress was smaller as the direction of force move upward. 5. Large compressive stress was appeared in maxillary first molar and infraorbital region in $45^{\circ}$ upward case and large compressive stress occurred in the posterior part of maxilla as the retraction force was upward.

  • This paper presents an experimental study to assess the effectiveness of using ferrocement to strengthen deficient beam-column joints. Ferrocement is proposed to protect the joint region through replacing concrete cover. Six exterior beam-column joints, including two control specimens and four strengthened specimens, are prepared and tested under constant axial load and quasi-static cyclic loading. Two levels of axial load on column (0.2fc'Ag and 0.4fc'Ag) and two types of skeletal reinforcements in ferrocement (grid reinforcements and diagonal reinforcements) are considered as test variables. Experimental results have indicated that ferrocement as a composite material can enhance the seismic performance of deficient beam-column joints in terms of peak horizontal load, energy dissipation, stiffness and joint shear strength. Shear distortions within the joints are significantly reduced for the strengthened specimens. High axial load (0.4fc'Ag) has a detrimental effect on peak horizontal load for both control and ferrocement-strengthened specimens. Specimens strengthened by ferrocement with two types of skeletal reinforcements perform similarly. Finally, a method is proposed to predict shear strength of beam-column joints strengthened by ferrocement.

  • This paper presents a strengthening method that involves the use of ferrocement jackets and chamfers to relocate plastic hinge for non-seismically designed reinforced concrete exterior beam-column joints. An experimental study was conducted to assess the effectiveness of the proposed strengthening method. Four half-scale beam-column joints, including one control specimen and three strengthened specimens, were prepared and tested under quasi-static cyclic loading. Strengthening schemes include ferrocement jackets with or without skeleton reinforcements and one or two chamfers. Experimental results have indicated that the proposed strengthening method is effective to move plastic hinge from the joint to the beam and enhance seismic performance of beam-column joints. Shear stress and distortion within the joint region are also reduced significantly in strengthened specimens. Skeleton reinforcements in ferrocement provide limited improvement, except on crack control. Specimen strengthened by ferrocement jackets with one chamfer exhibits slight decrease in peak strength and energy dissipation but with increase in ductility as compared with that of two chamfers. Finally, a method for estimating moment capacity at beam-column interface for strengthened specimen is developed. The proposed method gives reasonable prediction and can ensure formation of plastic hinge at predetermined location in the beam.

  • In oriental medicine, Coptis japonica $M_{AKINO}$ (Ranunculaceae) has been known as bitter stomachics. This plant originally grows wild and has been cultivated in Japan but not in Korea. However, a few years ago, some workers have been trying to cultivate this plant in Korea and have made much progress. Therefore, this . study was made for the purpose of conforming possibility in cultivation of Coptis japonica $M_{AKINO}$ in Korea. The results were as follows: 1) Berberine contents of rhizomes are much more than of K.P.. Difference in contents between Eu Jeon Bu $(4.88{\pm}0.77%)$ and Bo Seong area $(3.62{\pm}0.50%)$ is significant (p<0.05). 2) Berberine contents of fibrous roots of Eu jeong Bu $(0.97{\pm}0.28%)$ area was similar to that of Gang Nam $(0.93{\pm}0.21%)$, Yang Pyung area $(0.91{\pm}0.14%)$ but only contents of Bo Seong area $(0.74{\pm}0.25%)$ is less than that of other area and it's difference is not significant. 3) It was considered that the cultivation of Coptis japonica $M_{AKINO}$ in Korea is possible considering the cultivation results and berberine contents, and also more moderate than south region.

  • To study the seismic damage of masonry structures and understand the characteristics of the multi-intensity region, according to the Dujiang weir urbanization of China Wenchuan earthquake, the deterioration of 3991 masonry structures was summarized and statistically analysed. First, the seismic damage of multistory masonry structures in this area was investigated. The primary seismic damage of components was as follows: Damage of walls, openings, joints of longitudinal and transverse walls, windows (lower) walls, and tie columns. Many masonry structures with seismic designs were basically intact. Second, according to the main factors of construction, seismic intensity code levels survey, and influence on the seismic capacity, a vulnerability matrix calculation model was proposed to establish a vulnerability prediction matrix, and a comparative analysis was made based on the empirical seismic damage investigation matrix. The vulnerability prediction matrix was established using the proposed vulnerability matrix calculation model. The fitting relationship between the vulnerability prediction matrix and the actual seismic damage investigation matrix was compared and analysed. The relationship curves of the mean damage index for macrointensity and ground motion parameters were drawn through calculation and analysis, respectively. The numerical analysis was performed based on actual ground motion observation records, and fitting models of PGA, PGV, and MSDI were proposed.
