The aim of this study was to investigate the amount of glucosinolates (GSLs) in kale sprouts (Brassica oleracea L. var. acephala) ('TBC') according to different concentrations of sulfur ions in sprout's nutrient solutions (0.0, 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0 mM) and to different light sources [Fluorescent lamp, Red, Blue, and Mix (R+B) LED]. Kale sprouts were cultivated in a growth chamber for 13 days in sulfur solutions. Kale sprouts were treated with fluorescent lamp and LED light sources for 5 days, from eight days after sowing to harvest. Amount of seven types of GSLs (progoitrin, sinigrin, 4-hydroxyglucobrassicin, glucobrassicin, 4-methoxyglucobrassicin, gluconasturtiin, and neoglucobrassicin) were measured in kale sprouts after harvest. The total GSL content was influenced by different sulfur solution concentration, and it was the highest at S 0.5 mM ($172.54{\mu}mol{\cdot}g^{-1}DW$) and the lowest at S 2.0 mM ($163.09{\mu}mol{\cdot}g^{-1}DW$). The GSL content was influenced by different light source, and it was the highest with Red LED ($159.23{\mu}mol{\cdot}g^{-1}DW$) and the lowest with Blue LED ($147.57{\mu}mol{\cdot}g^{-1}DW$). As the sulfur solution concentration increased under all light source, progoitrin and sinigrin contents tended to decrease while glucobrassicin content showed an upward tendency for all of the light sources. The content of glucobrassicin was higher than that of progitrin when treated with sulfur solutions for all LED light sources. Sinigrin, which has excellent anti-cancer effects, showed the highest rate (92.2%) among all the GSLs, under all of the light sources.

In order to study current-voltage-luminance and impedance characteristics according to elapsed time, a blue fluorescent OLED was fabricated. The current density and luminance gradually decreased in accordance with elapsed time and did not emit light after 480 hours, and the threshold voltage increased as time elapsed. The Cole-Cole plot was a semicircular shape of a very large size at 2 V of the applied voltage below the threshold voltage, and the maximum value of the real number impedance did not change greatly from 9314.5 to $9902.2{\Omega}$ as time elapsed. Applied voltages 4, 6, and 8 V above the threshold voltage showed a large change in the real number impedance value at the semicircle end to 9,678.2, 9,826, $9,535.4{\Omega}$ according to the elapsed time from 2,222.5, 183.7, $48.2{\Omega}$ immediately after fabricating the device. By increasing the applied voltage beyond the threshold voltage just after device fabrication, the energy difference between the device and the organic layer was overcome and the current flowed, the maximum value of the real number impedance sharply decreased. As time passed, current did not flow through the element even at high applied voltage due to degradation of the element, and even when the applied voltage was higher than the threshold voltage, it showed an impedance value such as applied voltage equal to or less than the threshold voltage. As a result, it can be learned that the change in the impedance with elapsed time reflects the characteristics due to the degradation of the OLED and can predict the characteristics and lifetime of the OLED.

Dandelion has been widely utilized for medicinal and edible purposes. This research was conducted to evaluate the effect of supplemental LED (light-emitting diode) light on germination, growth characteristics and anthocyanin content of dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) seedling using LED blue (460 nm), red (660 nm, R), blue + red (B:R=6:4) and fluorescent lamp light treatment. By LED illumination to T. officinale seed germination speed was delayed, and germination rate was the highest in the fluorescent light. The growth characteristics (plant height, number of leaves, root length and fresh weight) were greatly influenced by supplemental LED light compared with control treatment, and the growth promotion was the most effective in the red LED illumination. After 60 days of red and mixed LED light treatments, anthocyanin content of dandelion plants was significantly changed. The anthocyanin content was increased by 12~19 mg/100 g under the red LED and the mixed light conditions compared with the control and the blue LED. Results indicate that illumination with red and mix LEDs, compared with other light treatments, is beneficial for promotion of growth and anthocyanin content in dandelion.

We investigated the effect of monochromatic light emitting diode (LED) on the growth of diatoms Nitzschia sp., Phaeodactylum tricornutum, Skeletonema sp. and green algae Chlorella vulgaris. The four microalgae species were cultured under blue LED (450 nm), yellow LED (590 nm), red LED (650 nm) and fluorescent lamp (mixed wavelengths). The maximum growth rates and cell densities of Nitzschia sp., P. tricornutum and Skeletonema sp. were highest under blue LED, followed by fluorescent lamp, red LED and then yellow LED, however those of C. vulgaris were highest under red LED. This result indicates that blue LED is favorable for the growth of diatoms. Thus, the growth of microalgae under monochromatic light might be species-specific or taxon-specific. Also, these results could be used as an important information in future for remediation of heavy metal contamination in the sediments using LED and microalgae.

Organic light-emitting diodes(OLEDs) have received considerable attention since they were first reported by Tang. Novel organic fluorescent materials have been reported on synthesis and application of new organic light-emitting materials. Despite of much recent progress, fabrication of full-color OLEDs still remained to be done. Many method have been proposed to full-color OLEDs displays such as using separated red, green and blue emitters, stacking separate rad, green and blue emitter, using a white emitter with individually pattered color filters, microcavity structures and using a blue emitter with individually patterned fluorescent materials. The last method has much attention because of easy fabrication of OLEDs and low-priced fabrication. This paper reports the optical and electrical characteristics of OLEDs using novel molecules containing biphenyl structure. Optical properties of biphenyl derivatives doped with poly(9-vinyl carbazole)(PVK) are measured and found Forster energy transfer process in the blends. And devices were fabricated as ITO/PEDOT/PVK doped with biphenyl derivatives/$Alq_3$/Li:Al and I-V-L characteristics and EL efficiency of devices were examined.
To establish the optimum artificial light illumination method for baby leaf lettuce in closed plant factory system, the effects of red/blue light quality and short-term light quality conversion on growth and anthocyanin content were investigated. The growth of 'Hongha' lettuce was most favorable under red single wavelength LED light after 23 days of treatment, sequentially followed by the growth under red/blue mixed light, blue light, and fluorescent light. Total anthocyanin content in the mixed red/blue light (R57-B43) was 4.1-fold and 6.9-fold increased compared to the red LED and fluorescent light, respectively. With increasing the blue light ratio to 43%, the growth of lettuce was significantly decreased, while the relative chlorophyll content and Hunter's $a^*$ value was increased, indicating that the red/blue light ratio inversely affects on growth and anthocyanin pigment development. By changing light quality from red to red/blue mixed light source (R57-B43) for 9 days before harvest, the growth rate decreased compared to the continuous red light illumination, while the anthocyanin content dramatically increased compared to either red LED or fluorescent light. Whereas, when the light source was changed to red light, the growth rate was increased but anthocyanin content was reversely decreased. The result demonstrated that both growth and anthocyanin expression could be effectively regulated by shifting of light quality between red and red/blue mixed light source at a specific growth stage of lettuce in a plant factory.
Early growth, pigmentation, protein content, and phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL) activity of red curly lettuces (Lactuca sativa L.) grown under different lighting conditions were investigated. Fluorescent lamps (control), blue, red, and blue plus red light-emitting diodes (LEDs) were used as light sources for 10 days. An equal proportion (1:1) of blue and red LEDs was used in the mixed radiation condition. Compared with the control, monochromic red or blue lighting increased fresh and dry weights of 'Ttuksum' and 'Jaju' lettuces. Anthocyanin synthesis was also significantly promoted by the mixed radiation of blue and red LEDs. The mixed radiation also increased the protein content and PAL enzyme activity of 'Ttuksum' leaves by about 200% compared to other treatments. Anthocyanin content was the highest in lettuces subjected to the mixture radiation of blue and red light treatment, while anthocyanin synthesis was inhibited by monochromic red light. The results of the present study indicate that growth and pigment synthesis in lettuces are significantly enhanced by exposure to mixed radiation from blue and red LEDs.

To fabricate a single layer white organic light emitting diode (OLED), a novel non-conjugated blue emitting material PPPMA-co-DTPM copolymer was synthesized containing a perylene moiety unit with hole transporting and blue emitting ability and a triazine moiety unit with electron transporting ability. The devices were fabricated using PPPMA-co-DTPM $(PPPMA[70\;wt\%]:DTPM[30\;wt\%])$ copolymer by varying the doping concentrations of each red, green and blue fluorescent dye, by molecular-dispersing into Toluene solvent with spin coating method. In case of ITO/PPPMA-co-DTPM:TPB$(3\;mol\%):C6(0.04\;mol\%):NR(0.015\;mol\%)/Al$ structure, as they were molecular-dispersing into 30 mg/ml Toluene solvent, nearly-pure white light was obtained both (0.325, 0.339) in the CIE coordinates at 18 V and (0.335, 0.345) at 15 V. The turn-on voltage was 3 V, the light-emitting turn-on voltage was 4 V, and the maximum external quantum efficiency was $0.667\%$ at 24.5 V. Also, in case of using 40 mg/ml Toluene solvent, the CIE coordinate was (0.345, 0.342) at 20 V.
This study was conducted to identify a suitable color of light for development of the fruit body in Hypsizygus marmoreus. To accomplish this, samples were irradiated with blue (475 nm), green (525 nm), yellow (590 nm), or red (660 nm) light emitting diodes (LEDs) to induce the formation of fruiting bodies after mycelia growth. The diameter and thickness of the pileus and length of stipes in samples subjected to blue LED treatment were similar to those of subjected to fluorescent light (control), and the lengths of the stipes were highest in response to treatment with the red LED and darkness. The commercial yields of plants subjected to blue and green LED treatment were similar to those of the control. In conclusion, cultivation of H. marmoreus coupled with exposure to blue LED is useful for inducing high quality fruit bodies as well as higher levels of ergosterol, DPPH radical scavenging activity, total polyphenol content and reducing power.

A series of blue fluorescent emitters based on triphenylene derivatives were synthesized via the Diels-Alder reaction in moderate yields. The electronic absorption and emission characteristics of the new functional materials were affected by the nature of the substituent on the triphenylene nucleus. Multilayered OLEDs were fabricated with a device structure of: ITO/NPB (50 nm)/EML (30 nm)/Bphen (30 nm)/Liq (2.0 nm)/Al (100 nm). All devices showed efficient blue emissions. Among those, a device using 1 gives the best performances with a high brightness (978 cd $m^{-2}$ at 8.0 V) and high efficiencies (a luminous efficiency of 0.80 cd/A, a power efficiency of 0.34 lm/W and an external quantum efficiency of 0.73% at 20 $mA/cm^2$). The peak wavelength of the electroluminescence was 455 nm with CIEx,y coordinates of (0.17, 0.14) at 8.0 V.
