  • This study was carried out to investigate the effect of mixture of Gastrodiae rhizoma (GM) on blood amelioration in high cholesterol-diet rats. Sprague-Dawley male rats were randomly assigned to one normal diet and three high cholesterol-diet groups which contained 1 % (w/w) cholesterol diet. The groups of high cholesterol-diet were classified to control (high cholesterol-diet only), GM-1 (high cholesterol-diet and GM) and ST-1 (high cholesterol-diet and Statin drug). The body and organs weight were not significantly changed among the tested groups. Contents of serum total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol were significantly increased in cholesterol-diet groups compared with normal diet group but significantly decreased in the group of GM-1. Morphology of red blood cell in GM-1 group was similar to normal diet group but the control group had many crystals of cholesterol. Hepatic xanthine oxidase activity in the rats of high cholesterol-diet was decreased up to the levels of normal diet group according to oral administration of GM. The results of the present study demonstrate that the orally injection of GM can ameliorate the status of total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol, and repress xanthine oxidase in liver in high cholesterol-diet rats. These finding suggest that GM is expected to be an effective tea for the blood amelioration in high cholesterol-diet rats.

  • The purpose of this study was designed to observe the effects of Zizyphus jujuba seed extract on the concentrations of the lipids and blood glucose in the S.D. rats fed the experimental diets for 4 weeks. Concentrations of total cholesterol, atherosclerotic index, LDL, LDL-cholesterol, free-cholesterol, cholesteryl ester, triglyceride (TG), phospholipid (PL) and blood glucose in serum were significantly higher in the cholesterol administration groups (group 2 (cholesterol+water), group 3 (cholesterol+Zizyphus jujuba seed extract)) than those in the control group (group 1, basal diet+water). But the concentrations of total cholesterol, atherosclerotic index, LDL, LDL-cholesterol, free-cholesterol, cholesteryl ester, TG, PL and blood glucose in serum ware remarkably lower in the group 3 than those in the group 2. In the ratio of HIDL-cholesterol concentration to total cholesterol and HDL-cholesterol concentration, Zizyphus jujuba seed extract administration group was higher percentage than in the group 2. The activities of aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine amino-transferase (ALT), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) in serum were rather lower in the Zizyphus jujuba seed extract administration group (group 3) than in the cholesterol diet group (group 2). From the above research, Zizyphus jujuba seeds were effective on the improvement of the blood glucose, lipid compositions in serum of dietary hyperlipidemic rats. And particularly, Zizyphus jujuba seeds were more effective as a therapeutic regimen for the control of metabolic derangements in adult disease.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effect of phytosterol ester addition on lowering blood cholesterol in cholesterol-reduced Cheddar cheese. For cholesterol removal, separated cream was treated with 10% ${\beta}$-cyclodextrin at 800 rpm, then blended with remaining skim milk and homogenized with 1,000 psi at $70^{\circ}C$. Experimental cheeses were manufactured by five different levels of phytosterol addition. After the cholesterol reduction process by ;${\beta}$-cyclodextrin, the cholesterol removal rate was in the range of 91.0 to 92.1%. Amount of short-chain free fatty acid and free amino acids increased with an increase of phytosterol ester, and those were significantly different from that of control in all ripening periods. All rheological properties also increased with an increase of phytosterol ester during ripening period. In sensory analysis, the scores of rancid, bitterness Cheddar flavor and off-flavor intensities increased significantly, while texture was decreased during ripening in phytosterol ester-added groups. Total blood cholesterol was reduced by 18% when rats were fed Cheddar cheese treated with 8% phytosterol. The present study indicated that phytosterol ester addition resulted in a profound lowering effect of blood with cholesterol-reduced Cheddar cheese.

  • This study investigated whether dietary factors are more influential factor than other health behavior such as drinking, smoking and exercise on abnormal serum cholesterol level inspite of Korean dietary pattern differences compared to Europeans and Americans. A double case control study model has been used for the study design. One model consisted of high blood cholesterol cases and control. the other model consisted of low blood cholesterol cased and controls. 5.398 sedentary male workers who had taken medical examinations at a university hospital were used as the study subjects. Out of the study subjects, 36individuals with high blood cholesterol cases and 30 individuals with low blood cholesterol cases were selected. For the 66 individual control selection, the individual control selection, the individuals matching method was adopted. The food frequency method was used to collect the data for assessment of the dietary factors. A standardized questionnaire was used to investigate other health behavior. logistic regression analysis was employed to measure the relative importance between the factors considered. There were no statistically significant differences observed in nutrients consumption or other health behavior among the low, normal and high blood cholesterol groups, An overmatching effect had been suspected as the cause of those findings. However, the results of logistic regression analysis to identify the factors influencing high serum cholesterol showed that odd ratios of dietary factors such as tocopherol(3.0) and saturated fatty acid(1.6) were higher than I. I of smoking and 1.2 of drinking. Similar results were also observed incases of low serum cholesterol. The above findings imply that although the dietary pattern is quite different from that of Europeans and America, the dietary factor is still a significant factor for abnormal blood cholesterol in Koreans. Therefore, the dietary risk factor identified in high fat consumption populations are still relevant for the relatively healthy Korean as guideline for preventive health practices. • Objectives : We wanted to investigate the relationship between heavy metal, especially lead and mercury, to the blood pressure and cholesterol level in children. Methods : This study was undertaken in three primary schools and the study subjects were a total of 274 children. The lead in the blood and the urine mercury were analyzed by performing atomic absorption spectroscopy. Results : All of participants' blood lead levels and urine mercury concentrations were below the suggested level of concern according to the criteria of the CDC and ATSDR. We found no significant correlation between lead, mercury and the blood pressure. The blood lead level did not show any relationship with the blood pressure and cholesterol. However, the urine mercury levels were associated with the serum cholesterol. Conclusion : Our study suggests that mercury can induce an increase of cholesterol as a risk factor of myocardial infraction and coronary/cardiovascular disease.

  • Effects of Acanthopanax EtOH Extract (AEE) on the serum total cholesterol content of normal and cholesterol administered rabbits were investigated as a series of studies on pharmacological action, especially blood pressure to Korean Acanthopanax. AEE was administered orally(100mg/kg/day) and subcutaneously (30mg/kg/day) in both normal and cholesterol administered rabbits for 36 days. In this experiment the results obtained by comparing with values of the corresponding control group were as follows; 1) In the normal rabbits, long-term administration of AEE for 36 days did not entirely influence the serum total cholesterol content measured at 12th, 24th and 36th day and also not affect the original blood pressure and changes of blood pressure to norepinephrine, angiotensin and acetylcholine recorded at 36th day. 2) In the cholesterol administered rabbits, hypercholesteremia was induced by oral administration of cholesterol(300mg/kg/day) with feed. The rise rate of serum total cholesterol content was not modified at 12th day, whereas significantly inhibited at 24th and 36th days after begining this examination in both groups orally and subcutaneously administered AEE. Original blood pressure was declined and depressor action of acetylcholine was weakened in only group admininstered orally AEE of cholesterol-fed groups. Changes of blood pressure to norepinephrine and angiotensin in these all cholesterol-fed groups, and to acetylcholine in subcutaneous group of these cholesterol-fed groups were not affected significantly by AEE.

  • It is now generally accepted that individuals at increased risk for cardiovascular disease may be identified by certain traits or habbits. The factors such as high blood pressure, elevated blood cholestrol, age, sex and obesity are associated with increseaed frequency of disease. The blood cholesterol level lowering will decrease cardiovascular disease risk. The regression of atherosclerosis can be achieved by lowering the level of circulating cholesterol. Those things are connected with the quantity and quality of protein, fats, carbohydrates, especially soluble and non-soluble fiber, magnesium and calcium. The lipoprotein and lipid metabolism are connected with the lipid transport. The factors on lipid absorption and blood serum lipid pattern of human are exist. The factors have a variety of materials with different chemical and physical properties. The soluble fiber diet make a low blood and liver lipids. Many kind of soluble fiber results in a lowering of blood cholesterol and triglyceride levels. The cholesterol lowering effects of dietery fiber may be a results of alterations of in intestinal handling of fats, hepatic metabolism of fatty acid or triglyceride acid metabolism of lipoprotein. It is investigated that the high density lipoprotein (HDL) is inversely related to coronary artery disease. It has been postulated that HDL may be an important factor in cholesterol efflux from the tissues, therby reducing the amount of cholesterol deposited there. Alternatively, the HDL may pick up cholestyl ester and phospholipid during normal VLDL lipolysis in the plasma. The HDL levels are relatively insensitive to diet. At present time, the cause-and -diet effect of HDL's inverse relation to CHD remains unclear.
