  • Thrombogenesis, which is the process of blood clot formation, can be initiated by platelet activation. Excessive formation of blood clot in the bloodstream can lead to thrombosis. Therefore, when dealing with patients with disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) or children, it is necessary to use small amounts of blood. Hence, it is important to develop methods for the rapid and accurate measurement of the platelet function using a small amount of blood. In this study, 3D printing technology was utilized to facilitate the production of micro channels. The amount of platelet adhesion in smokers and non-smokers was compared by repeatedly exposing the structure of the channel to adjust the number of blood injections and facilitate thrombosis attachment to simple stenosis structures.

  • Accurate measurement of blood pressure is essential for classifying an individual's disease, identifying blood pressure-related risks, and managing health. Due to the environmental and health hazards of mercury sphygmomanometers, automatic sphygmomanometers using the oscillometric method are widely used in hospitals as well as in general homes, and have established themselves as a practical standard sphygmomanometer. In this study, we developed a blood pressure simulator using an actuator that provides simulated pressure to an automatic blood pressure cuff. The developed blood pressure simulator adopts an arm-shaped cylindrical shape similar to the situation in which a person measures blood pressure with an automatic blood pressure monitor, and implements a method of transmitting pressure to the cuff using a pressure plate. Accuracy was evaluated through the mean and standard deviation of the difference with the commercialized blood pressure simulator BP PUMP 2, and reproducibility was confirmed using two automatic blood pressure monitors. The developed blood pressure simulator enables automatic blood pressure monitoring in a simple manner and also meets the evaluation standards for accuracy and reproducibility. In the future, as a standardized blood pressure simulator, it is expected to be of great help in evaluating and verifying the performance of automatic blood pressure monitors by supplementing precise hardware and software and building a blood pressure database.

  • One of the key technologic requirements for rotary blood pumps is the sealing of the motor shaft. A mechanical seal, a journal bearing, magnetic coupling, and magnetic suspension have been developed, but they have drawbacks such as wear, thrombus formation, and power consumption. A magnetic fluid seal is durable, simple, and non power consumptive. Long-term experiments confirmed these advantages. The seal body was composed of a Nd-Fe-B magnet and two pole pieces; the seal was formed by injecting magnetic fluid into the gap (50${\mu}m$) between the pole pieces and the motor shaft. To contain the ferro-fluid in the seal and to minimize the possibility of magnetic fluid making contact with blood, a shield with a small cavity was attached to the pole piece. While submerged in blood, the sealing pressure of the seal was measured and found to be 31kPa with magnetic fluid LS-40 (saturated magnetization, 24.3 KA/m) at a motor speed of 10,000 rpm and 53kPa under static conditions(0mmHg). The specially designed magnetic fluid seal for keeping liquids out is useful for axial flow blood pumps. The magnetic fluid seal was incorporated into an intra-cardiac axial flow blood pump.

  • From the Study on the Pricking blood therapy of ${\ulcorner}$HwangjeNaegyeong${\lrcorner}$, we conclude as follows; 1. The blood is apt to coagulate because of having concreteness. The blood is mainly coagulate as the collateral Meridian, minute collaterals, superficial collaterals and superficial vessels. By way of the Pricking blood therapy, the Stagnation of blood can be circulated, pathogenic factor removed, Eum-Yang(陰陽) and Gi and blood(氣血) can reach their balance. 2. To bloodletting, we should examine minutely, touch carefully with the region of the stagnated blood. After close observation of the stagnated blood, we should remove the stagnated blood up to clear. At the same time, we should observe carefully the color of the stagnated blood. 3. The acupuncture used for the Pricking blood therapy were stone needle, Bongchim(鋒鍼), Chamchim(?鍼), Pichim(?鍼) and Hochim(毫鍼) etc: After ages, from the base of Bongchim(鋒鍼), the three-edged needle became typical form. The skill of the Pricking blood therapy also became diverse, clinical application became wide. 4. After giving medical treatment with the Pricking blood therapy, reactions are various. Among them are side effects and normal effects. 5. The Pricking blood therapy is usually considered as simple sectional curing method, while it was considered as curing disease of JangBu(臟腑) or meridians in ${\ulcorner}$Hwangje-Naegyeong${\lrcorner}$. Therefore, if we sould apply the Pricking blood therapy on the basis of ${\ulcorner}$Hwangje-Naegyeong${\lrcorner}$, we should carefully understand the pattern identification according to Meridians and collaterals, and pattern identification of the Jang-Bu organs.

  • This paper proposes an ultrasound vessel-pattern imaging algorithm with low computational complexity. The proposed imaging algorithm reconstructs blood-vessel patterns by only detecting blood flow, and can be applied to a real-time signal processing hardware that extracts an ultrasonic finger-vessel pattern. Unlike a blood-flow imaging mode of typical ultrasound medical imaging device, the proposed imaging algorithm only reconstructs a presence of blood flow as an image. That is, since the proposed algorithm does not use an I/Q demodulation and detects a presence of blood flow by accumulating an absolute value of the clutter-filter output, a structure of the algorithm is relatively simple. To verify a complexity of the proposed algorithm, a simulation model for finger vessel was implemented using Field-II program. Through the behavioral simulation, it was confirmed that the processing time of the proposed algorithm is around 54 times less than that of the typical color-flow mode. Considering the required main building blocks and the amount of computation, the proposed algorithm is simple to implement in hardware such as an FPGA and an ASIC.

  • Purpose: Prolactin in the blood is separated into three types, and over 90% of prolactin presents as a double monomer (23 KDa). Rarely, it can exist in the size of big prolactin (150 KDa), which is called macroprolactin and is known as an autoantibody complex. When macroprolactin accounts for more than 60% of prolactin in the blood, it is called macroprolactinemia. The presence of such macroprolactin was first reported in a patient with hyperprolactinemia but without typical symptoms. Macroprolactinemia is emerging as an important cause of idiopathic hyperprolactinemia. The polyethylene glycol (PEG) precipitation method using the property of precipitating large-molecular-weight proteins is simple and recently has been widely used as a screening test. The results are in good agreement with the results of gel chromatography. The purpose of this study was to confirm the measurement method and reference value verification of monomeric prolactin in blood prolactin using the PEG precipitation method. Materials and Methods: For 40 examinees who visited the Gangnam Center of Seoul National University Hospital in 2021, the prolactin level was verified using radioimmunoassay (RIA). For macroprolactinemia PEG precipitation method, 25% PEG (molecular weight 6000kDa) solution and serum were mixed in equal amounts in a test tube, then left at room temperature for 20 minutes and centrifuged at 4℃ for 30 minutes (1500g). The prolactin level was measured in the supernatant. Results : After confirming that more than 90% of the 40 tested samples within the reference range <25 ng/mL, the same value as the reference value for prolactin was applied. Since the concentration of monomeric prolactin in serum from which macroprolactin has been removed from blood is diluted 1:1 with PEG, our laboratory is currently reporting the result by multiplying the result by a dilution factor of 2. Conclusion: Radioimmunoassay using PEG precipitation method using the property of precipitating large molecular weight proteins is simple and effective for quantitative measurement of monomeric prolactin in blood prolactin.

  • The effect of a solute concentration difference on the osmotic transport of water through the semi-permeable membrane of a simple cell model is investigated. So far, most studies on osmotic phenomena are described by simple diffusion-type equations ignoring all fluid motion or described by Stokes flow. In our work, as the governing equations, we consider the coupled full Navier-Stokes equations which describe the fluid motion and the full transport equation that takes into account of convection and diffusion effects. A two dimensional finite difference model has been developed to simulate the velocity field, concentration field, and semi-permeable membrane movement. It is shown that the cell swells to regions of lower solute concentration due to the uneven water flux through the semi-permeable membrane. The simulation is applied on a red blood cell geometry and the relevant results are presented.

  • A 3-month-old, female Persian cat was presented with sclera mass. The mass was detected after cat's squeals during the playing with a dog before 2 days. On ophthalmic examination, a $2{\times}5mm$ dark purple colored raised mass was observed 1 mm behind the limbus in the right eye. Anterior chamber was filled with blood and epithelial defect was detected at 2 o'clock in the right central cornea. After general anesthesia, resection of the protruded iris was performed with iris scissors and bipolar cautery. Ruptured sclera and conjunctiva were closed with simple interrupted and simple continuous suture, respectively. Also, irrigation and aspiration (I/A) of the anterior chamber was performed to remove blood clot with bimanual I/A handpiece in the right eye. Four months after the surgery, the right eye was recovered completely and menace response was positive in spite of the retinal lesions.
