  • The causes of periodontal disease have been descried as malocclusion, trauma from occlusion, local irritants and poor oral hygien. The systemic factor has also been considered as a etiologic factor of periodontal disease. On the other aspect systemic condition could be affected by periodontal disease. For the study of relationships between periodontal disease and systemic condition, twenty patients with periodontal disease and twenty persons with no periodontal involvement were evaluated for inorganic elements and organic materials in the blood. The results of the blood analysis of the two groups were as follows. : Phosphorus and alkline-phoshatase in the group with periodontal disease showed slightly increased phenomenon compared to the control group, and on the other hand calcium and calcium-phosphorus ratio decreased phenomenon. But there is no any significant alteration in the content of each element between the two groups.

  • Neonates, especially extremely low birth weight infants, are among the groups of patients undergoing transfusion frequently. Since they are exposed to higher specific transfusion risks compared to the patients of other age groups, there are many special aspects that must be considered for transfusion therapy in neonates. The transfusion risks in neonates include adverse outcomes specific for preterm infants as well as increased metabolic, immunologic, and infectious complications. To reduce the risks of transfusion-transmitted cytomegalovirus infection and transfusion-associated graft-versus-host disease, leukoreduced and irradiated cellular blood products should be used for all neonates. This review summarizes the risks of neonatal transfusion therapy, specific methods to reduce risk, and current trends and practices of red blood cell and platelet transfusions in neonates, to facilitate decision-making for neonatal transfusion.

  • The clinical experience with the activated clotting time[A.C.T.] for the control of heparin and protamine therapy during cardiopulmonary bypass in 40 patients between April, 1987 and September, 1987 is reviewed retrospectively. All of patients used with cold blood potassium cardioplegia for myocardial protection under standard cardiopulmonary bypass, priming and perfusate techniques respectively. This study was divided into 2 groups of patients followed by cardiopulmonary bypass time. Twenty patients, within 60 minutes of cardiopulmonary bypass time[group A] were compared with twenty patients, from 60 to 120 minutes of cardiopulmonary bypass time[group B]. Using blood cardioplegia for myocardial protection, Author observed wide variation of A.C.T. in individual response to initial heparinization[2mg /kg] and no requirement of additional heparin during cardiopulmonary bypass until 120 minutes. Total heparin amount during cardiopulmonary bypass was not related to body weight and body surface area in the both groups. After cardiopulmonary bypass, amounts of protamine for neutralization of heparin were more required in group B.

  • Paraquat is a useful nonselective herbicide widely used throughout the world. However, accidental or intentional ingestion of the paraquat cause fetal pulmonary injuring. But there is not suitable antidote of paraquat intoxication and therapeutic agents now be used are not effective. So, in this study we intended to evaluate the inhibitory effects of DDB(dimethyl-4,4'dimethoxy-5,6,5',6'-dimethylene dioxyphenyl-2,2'-dicarboxylate) on paraquat toxicity. DDB (100mg/kg) was administered orally to SD rats lhr after paraquat(50mg/kg) injection. After 24 hours, the biochemical parameters of blood and tissues were examined. In paraquat treated groups sGPT, sGOT, BUN, creatinine, MDA and alkaline phosphatase levels in blood and MDA, glucose-6-phosphatase activity in tissues were elevated by 2 to 5 times of normal values. However in schizandrin treated groups, sGPT, sGOT, MDA and alkaline phosphatase activity in blood and MDA and glucose-6-phosphatase activity were significantly decreased to notmal levels but not in biochemical parameters of nephrotoxicity, BUN and creatinine levels. Therefore, we concluded that schizandrin can be used as an antidote of pulmono, hepatotoxicity of paraquat.

  • Purpose: The study sought to determine the state of blood glucose control, and the consequent clinical effects and variation in blood glucose level, of adult patients admitted to intensive care units following cardiothoracic surgery by comparing the blood glucose levels before and after the application of a blood glucose control protocol. Methods: The protocol was developed by modifying and supplementing the Yale protocol, and was first used in 2012. The resulting blood glucose data of an experimental group (n = 314), to which the blood glucose control protocol had been applied, and a control group (n = 347), whose blood glucose levels had been controlled according to physicians'prescriptions without the protocol, were collected through the medical records. Results: The target blood glucose ratio increased significantly in the experimental group, and the low blood glucose ratio decreased significantly in the experimental group. The two groups exhibited a significant difference (p < .001) in the degree of variation in the blood glucose levels. The duration of the use of a ventilator was significantly reduced in the experimental group (p < .001). Conclusion: It is expected that the protocol can be used for the safe and effective control of critically ill cardiothoracic surgery patients' blood glucose levels.

  • This study investigated the effect of taste preference(sweet, sour, salty, hot) on anthropometric measurements and nutrient intakes of 256 primary school children in Kwangju. There was no significant difference in the anthropometric measurements according to the sweet taste preference. Height, weight, triceps, abdomen, and chest circumferences of the group preferring a sour taste, however, were significantly lower than those of the other groups. The height of the group preferring a salty taste was significantly shorter than that of the other groups and there was a tendency toward high systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure. The waist circumference of the group not preferring the hot taste was larger than those of the other groups. There was no significant difference in the energy intake according to the sweet taste preference. The protein intake of the group preferring a sweet taste as significantly lower than that of the other groups. The fiber intake of the group preferring a sour taste was significantly higher than that of the other groups. There were no significant differences in the nutrient intakes according to the salty taste preference. The energy intake of the group preferring a hot taste was lower than that of the other groups. The results show that children's taste preferences influence anthropometric measurements and nutrient intakes. These results suggest that children's eating behaviors are in needs of correction. The findings of this study should be applied to nutrition education to ensure better physical fitness of children.

  • The hypoglycemic effects of 2 mushrooms, Pleurotus ostreatus and Lentinus edodes, on streptozotocin(STZ) induced diabetic rats were investigated in this study . Diabets mellitus was induced in male Sprague-Dawley rats by the injection of STZinto the tail vein at a dose of 45mg/kg. Sprague-Dawley male rats(200-250g) were assigned to one control and three STZ-diabetic groups. Diabetic groups were assigned to STZ-control, pleurotus ostreatus and Lenitinus edodes groups. All groups were fed a AIN 76 diet. The two experimental groups were fed with each protein-bound polysaccharide(150mg/kg BW) for 14 days and with carboxymethyl cellulose for STZ-control group. The body weight gain was monitored and the blood levels of glucose and cholesterol were measured . Levels of protein triglyceride, and free fatty acid in plasma were analysed. Serum aminotransferase activity as also measured. The body weight gain was lower in the all diabetic groups than in the of normal group. The weight of spleen was reduced by adminstration of the Lentinus edodes protein-bound polysaccharides. The result suggest that orally administered Lentinus edodes protein-bound polysaccharides exhibited hypoglycemic effect in STZ -induced diabetic rats and that these protein-bound polysaccharides may be useful for the management of diabetes mellitus.

  • The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of BPA on reproductive characteristic and blood hematological and chemical values in mice. The male mice were intraperitoneally injected BPA in native control(no treatment), positive control(corn oil, 3$m\ell$/kg B.W), 0.05, 0.5 and 5.0mg BPA/kg B.W and female mice were injected BPA in control(corn oil, 3$m\ell$/kg B.W), 0.05, 0.5 and 5.0mg BPA/kg B.W with 5 times at 3 days interval for 14 days. The administration of BPA in male mice didn't affect the body and reproductive organ weight such as testis, epididymis, vesicular gland and coagulating gland. We found that the 5.0mg BPA group was significantly reduced the sperm concentration and increased the sperm abnormality compared to native, positive control and 0.05mg BPA groups(P<0.05), but any other effects were not found in sperm viability and motility in BPA treatment groups. The RBC, HB, HT, MCV, MCH, MCHC, albumin, BUN and total protein of blood hematological and chemical values in male were not different in all experimental groups(P>0.05). However, the value of WBC was slightly lower in BPA treatment groups than that of control groups and PLT was slightly higher in BPA groups than that of control groups, but not significantly defference among the experimental groups(P>0.05). In female mice, the effects of BPA on body weight didn’t affect in all experimental groups, but ovary weights in 0.5 and 5.0mg BPA groups were significantly increased compared to those in control and 0.05mg BPA group(P<0.05). The uterine weight in BPA groups was slightly higher than that of control group, but not significantly different in all experimental groups(P>0.05). The RBC, Hb, HT, MCV, MCH, MCHC, albumin and total protein of blood hematological and chemical values in female were not different in all experimental groups(P>0.05). The values of WBC and PLT in BPA groups were slightly higher than that of control, but not significantly different among the experimental groups. The concentration of BUN was the higher in BPA groups than that of control group. The histological evaluation of testis, ovary and uterus were not different in all experimental groups.
