  • We investigated the effect of Qi therapy (QT) on peripheral blood pressure (PBP), glucose, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and cortisol concentrations. Fourteen college students participated in receiving QT and placebo treatment. There were significant differences in embedding dimension of PBP. Plasma cortisol concentrations during QT were significantly lower than during control sessions (P

  • In this study, we attempted to quantify the relative importance of assumptions regarding blood rheology. Three patient-specific carotid bifurcation geometries and time-varying flow rates were obtained using magnetic resonance imaging. For each subject, CFD simulations were carried out assuming two different non-Newtonian rheology models Carreau and Ballyk models) and rescaled Newtonian viscosities based on characteristic shear rates to account for the shear-thinning property of blood. The sensitivity of WSS and oscillatory shear index (OSI) were contextualized with respect to the reproducibility of the reconstructed geometry and to assumptions regarding the inlet boundary conditions. We conclude that the assumption of Newtonian fluid is reasonable for studies aimed at quantifying the distribution of WSS-based extrema in an image-based CFD model of carotid bifurcation.

  • The encapsulation of the Purified bovine hemoglobin with Phospholipids obtained from egg folk was performed using a rotary vacuum evaporator. The prepared Hb-containing liposome (hemosome) had good properties as artificial red blood cell. The shape and size of the hemosomes were measured by a phase contrast microscope and image analyzer. The function of the hemosome as oxygen carrier was tested by measuring oxygen saturation curve with blood gas analyzer and infusing it into rats. The prepared hemosome was 1.184 + 0.423 ${\mu}m$ in diameter and round in shape. $P_{50}$ value of the hemosome solution was 28 mmHg. The synthesized red cells seem to function as oxygen carrier, because the severely bled rats were prolonged in their life by transfusion of the hemosome solution containing bovine hemoglobin.

  • The dietary carbohydrates are mainly digested and adsorbed at small intestine. We developed a new food additive as an egg yolk antibody(1gY) against maltase, sucrase and sodium dependent g1ucose cotransporter(SGLT) for the regulation of blood glucose level and weight control. The maltase, sucrase and SGLT were purified from porcine small intestine which is very similar to that of human in physiological characteristics. The purification step contained an ultracentrifugation, ion exchange chromatography and hydrophobic chromatography. The hens were immunized by purified protein and the IgY activities against immunized antigens were determined. This antibody obtained from the immunized hen's egg yolks directly inhibited the activities of maltase and sucrase in vitro. And the IgY delayed and decreased the increment of blood g1ucose level after administration of maltose, sucrose and glucose in rat about 30 to 60%. The results of this study suggest that the IgY inhibiting the carbohydrate digestion could be used as functional food materials for weight control and regulation of blood glucose level in diabetes.

  • The physiological systems have nonlinear complex phenomena. Expecially, the flow of capillary blood vessel has a nonlinear dynamic system. Thus, this study analyzes nonlinear characteristics of the flow of capillary blood vessel in physiological systems using chaotic tools(phase space reconstruction, correlation dimension, largest lyapunov exponent). Experimental data have been acquired from examining 10 rabbits. The results of chaotic analysis showed a decreasing largest lyapunov exponent and correlation dimension according to increasement glocose index. And we also know the chaotic behavior.

  • Ion beam enhanced deopsition(IBED) was adopted to synthesize biocompatible titanium oxide film. Structure characteristics of titanium oxide film were investigated by RBS, AES and XRD. The blood compatibility of the titanium oxide film was studied by measurements of blood clotting time and platelet adhesion. The results show that the anticoagulation property of titanium oxide film is improved significantly. The mechanism of anticoagulation of the titanium oxide film was discussed.

  • This experiment was conducted to determine the effects of extracts from fruit by-products on the blood characteristics, antioxidant activities, and immune response to Escherichia coli lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in growing pigs. A total of 96 pigs [(Landrace ${\times}$ Yorkshire) ${\times}$ Duroc] with an initial BW of $27.94{\pm}0.92kg$ were used in a 6-week feeding trial. The pigs were randomly placed into one of four treatment groups with six replications (four pigs per replication) per treatment according to their initial BW. Treatments were: 1) CON (basal diet), 2) PRO (CON + 0.5% procyanidin), 3) HES (CON + 0.5% hesperetin), 4) TAN (CON + 0.5% tannin). At the end of the sixth week, five pigs (total 20 pigs, $BW=27.94{\pm}0.92kg$) were selected from each treatment and injected with LPS ($100{\mu}g/kg$ of BW). Blood samples were collected 3 h after LPS injection to assess anti-oxidative and inflammatory responses. After the LPS challenge, the concentration of serum cholesterol decreased with fruit by-product treatment compared with CON (p<0.05). The administration of TAN increased the concentration of blood total protein compared with the CON group 3 h after LPS challenge (p<0.05). The albumin concentration was also higher with PRO treatment compared to HES treatment (p<0.05). The concentration of IgM was increased by fruit by-product supplementation at 0 and 3 h (p<0.05). In addition, IgG concentration was higher in PRO, HES, and TAN treatments compared to CON treatment at 0 h, and IgG concentrations were also higher in the HES group compared to the CON group at 3 h (p<0.05). The concentration of IgA also increased with fruit by-product treatments at 3 h (p<0.05). In conclusion, dietary supplementation with fruit by-products may moderate the immune response after a LPS challenge in growing pigs.

  • Two experiments were conducted separately with different concentration of dietary energy and protein to evaluate the performance, blood characteristics and bone mineral density (BMD) of broiler chicks. In experimentr 1, a total of 480 heads one-day-old Ross ${\times}$ Ross broiler chicks were randomly divided into 6 treatments (5 replications; 16 birds/pen). Three concentration of ME (3,000, 3,100 and 3,200 kcal/kg) and two of CP (pre-starter 22, 23%, starter 20, 21% and finisher 18, 19%) in a $3{\times}2$ factorial arrangement of treatments were used. In experiment 2, similar chicks and CP concentration was used but ME concentration was changed (pre-starter; 3,000, 3,050 and 3,100 kcal/kg, starter; 3,050, 3,100 and 3,150 kcal/kg, finisher; 3,100, 3,150 and 3,200 kcal/kg) in the diet. In both experiments, 10 blood and tibia samples were collected per treatment and blood characteristics and BMD were analyzed. In experiment 1, weight gain and feed intake were increased by the 3,000 kcal/kg ME in the diet (P<0.05). Serum total protein and albumin levels were increased numerically with the level of CP in the diet. Total cholesterol and HDL content were increased numerically with the energy content in the diet. Consistently in experiment 2, weight gain was increased numerically by the energy and protein level (prestarter $3,000{\times}23$, starter $3,050{\times}21$ and finisher 3,100 kcal/kg ME and 19% CP) in the diet. Serum glucose level was increased with the energy level in the diet (P<0.05). Therefore, serum total protein, albumin, triglycerides, total cholesterol and HDL contents were tended to increase with the energy increments in the diet.
