  • The compensated-current-differential relay uses the same restraining current as a conventional relay, but the differential current is modified to compensate for the effects of the exciting current. Delta winding current is necessary to obtain the modified differential current for a $Y-\Delta$ transformer. This paper describes an estimation algorithm of the delta winding current and its application to a compensated-current-differential relay for a $Y-\Delta$ transformer. Prior to saturation, the core-loss current is calculated and used to modify the differential current. When the core first enters saturation, the initial value of the core flux is obtained by inserting the modified differential current into the magnetization curve. This flux value is used to derive the magnetizing current and consequently the modified differential current. The operating performance of the proposed relay was compared against a conventional current differential relay with harmonic blocking. Test results indicate that the proposed relay remained stable during severe magnetic inrush and over-excitation, and its operating time is significantly faster than a conventional relay. The relay is unaffected by the level of remanent flux and does not require an additional restraining or blocking signal to maintain stability. This paper concludes by implementing the proposed algorithm into a prototype relay based on a digital signal processor.

  • This paper focuses on GPS positioning accuracy variations according to locations of obstacles which surround GPS station. We derived precise coordinates of a GPS station which has a good visibility. Its observation data was rewritten by assuming signal blocking due to obstacle in the elevation angle of $10^{\circ}$ to $70^{\circ}$. We processed daily and hourly data for 10 days. In the results using daily data, RMSE was at 10mm level. And RMSE increased to 100mm levels in case of hourly data. As the elevation angle of obstacle increased, the horizontal and vertical RMSE increased, while the height estimates decreased. These results showed the higher the elevation angle of the obstacle increased the loss of large amounts of data by blocking satellite signals direction. In terms of the direction, when the blocking thing was located in the east or west, the coordinate has larger error in the east-west direction. And if signal was blocked at the south direction, the difference between the east-west error and the south-north position error was reduced.

  • Objective: Embryonic interferon-tau (IFNT) and progesterone affect expression of interferon-stimulated genes (ISGs), progesterone receptor (PGR) and progesterone-induced blocking factor (PIBF) in the ovine thyroid. Methods: Thyroids of ewes were sampled at day 16 of nonpregnancy, days 13, 16, and 25 of pregnancy, and real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction assay, western blot and immunohistochemistry were used to detect expression of ISGs, PGR, and PIBF. Results: Free ISG15 protein was undetected, but ISG15 conjugated proteins upregulated at day 16 of pregnancy, and expression levels of ISG15 conjugated proteins, PGR isoform (70 kDa), PIBF, interferon-gamma-inducible protein 10 and myxovirusresistance protein 1 peaked, but expression level of signal transducer and activator of transcription 1 was the lowest at day 16 of pregnancy. In addition, the expression levels of PGR isoform (70 kDa) and signal transducer and activator of transcription 1 (STAT1) decreased, but levels of PGR isoform (43 kDa), 2',5'-oligoadenylate synthetase, IP-10 and MX1 increased at day 25 of pregnancy comparing with day 16 of the estrous cycle. Conclusion: Early pregnancy affects expression of ISGs, PGR, and PIBF in maternal thyroid through IFNT and progesterone, which may regulate thyroid autoimmunity and thyroid hormone secretion in ewes.

  • A new scheme to alleviate contention in optical burst switching networks is proposed. It consists of preventively reserving resources in a node, to be used if resources are busy on the next hop node. The burst is sent back to the preceding node and then resent forward. Simulations are carried out to assess the feasibility of the proposed scheme. Its performance is compared with that of contention resolution based on deflection routing.

  • Due to the miniaturization of electrical components and assembles on signal and telecommunication circuits, transient overvoltages caused by switching operation or lightning surge has become more interesting concern to the field of electrical engineering. This paper describes the development of transient voltage blocking devices (TBDs) that can protect sensitive signal and telecommunication devices from overvoltages. Two kinds of TBDs are designed and tested by using a combination surge generator which can produce the standard impulse current of 8/20${\mu}$s 2.1kA according to the IEC 1000-4-5 standard. From the simulation and experimental reults, it is confirmed that the proposed TBD has an enough protection performance in low insertion loss and tight clamping voltage.

  • We proposed the algorithm for the quantization noise reduction based on variable filter adaptive to edge signal in MPEG postprocessing system. In our algorithm, edge map and local modulus maxima in the decoded images are obtained by using 2D Mallat wavelet tilter. And then, blocking artifacts in inter-block are reduced by Gaussian LPF that is variable to filtering region according to edge map. Ringing artifacts in intra-block are reduced by 2D SAF according to local modulus maxima. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm was superior to the conventional algorithms as regards PSNR, which was improved by 0.04-0.20 dB, and the subjective image quality.

  • In this paper, we present effective quantization noise reduction algorithm using signal adaptive filter and linear combination between blocks in multimedia system. In the proposed method, all of the blocks are classified into low frequency blocks, high frequency blocks, and midrange blocks according to DCT coefficients. Ringing artifacts are shown in high frequency blocks. So ringing artifact reduction algorithm is performed in high frequency blocks using a signal adaptive filter. And the blocking artifact reduction is performed by replacing the pixel value of blocky blocks using linear combination between blocky block and remote unblocky block. The simulation results shows better performance in respective of the subjective and objective image quality than the conventional method.

  • Myoblast fusion is important for skeletal muscle formation. Even though the knowledge of myoblast fusion mechanism has accumulated over the years, the initial signal of fusion is yet to be elucidated. Our study reveals the novel function of a phosphatidylserine (PS) receptor, stabilin-2 (Stab2), in the modulation of myoblast fusion, through the recognition of PS exposed on myoblasts. During differentiation of myoblasts, Stab2 expression is higher than other PS receptors and is controlled by calcineurin/NFAT signaling on myoblasts. The forced expression of Stab2 results in an increase in myoblast fusion; genetic ablation of Stab2 in mice causes a reduction in muscle size, as a result of impaired myoblast fusion. After muscle injury, muscle regeneration is impaired in Stab2-deficient mice, resulting in small myofibers with fewer nuclei, which is due to reduction of fusion rather than defection of myoblast differentiation. The fusion-promoting role of Stab2 is dependent on its PS-binding motif, and the blocking of PS-Stab2 binding impairs cell-cell fusion on myoblasts. Given our previous finding that Stab2 recognizes PS exposed on apoptotic cells for sensing as an "eat-me" signal, we propose that PS-Stab2 binding is required for sensing of a "fuse-me" signal as the initial signal of myoblast fusion.

  • In this paper, after applying Defected Ground Structure(DGS) to DC block, changes of gap and length of λ/4 coupled line are investigated by EM simulation and fabrication. As a result, on condition of the same output with the case using typical DC block, the gap between λ/4 coupled line is widen from 0.1 mm to 0.46 mm by 0.36 mm and the length of λ/4 coupled line gets shorter from 17.7 mm to 13.2 mm by 4.5 mm. Also three type power amplifiers using blocking capacitor, typical DC block and DGS DC block are fabricated and investigated. At first, when S parameter characteristics of each amplifier are considered at frequency band of 3.2 +-0.O5 GHz, every amplifier has similar characteristics of gain and S parameter. Second when the output power of amplifiers is 25 dBm after putting CW signal of 3.2 GHz into three type amplifiers, the difference of dominant signal and 2nd harmonic signal using blocking capacitor, typical DC block and DGS DC block is each -44.83 dBc, -66.84 dBc and -64.33 dBc. Therefore harmonic characteristics of amplifiers using typical DC block and DGS DC block is almost same.
