To study how stable the rubble mound breakwaters are, one can look to the research of wave induced seepage flow through the pores of the rubble mound. Seepage flow is generally generated by the difference between the water level around the breakwater during a typhoon. The existing stability analysis method of the rubble mound is the static analysis which simply considers the force equilibrium taking into account the horizontal force acting on the concrete block induced by a wave (calculated by Goda equation) and the vertical force induced by the weight inclusive of the concrete block, quarry run, filter, and armor layer above the slipping plane. However, this static method does not consider the wave-induced seepage flow in the rubble mound. Such seepage may decrease the stability of the rubble mound. The stability of a rubble mound breakwater under the action of seepage was studied based on the results of CFD software (OpenFOAM) and Limit Equilibrium Method (GeoStudio). The numerical analysis result showed that the seepage flow decreased the stability of the rubble mound breakwaters. The results of the numerical analyses also revealed the stability of the rubble mound was varied with time. Especially, the most critical state happened at the condition of overtopping the concrete block, acting strong uplift pressure raising along side and underneath the concrete block, and generating high pore pressure inside rubble mound due to seepage flow. Therefore, it may be necessary to conduct a dynamic analysis considering the effect of wave-induce seepage flow together with the static analysis.
In this paper, we report the results of the experimental study on the flow and the mass transport around a square harbor driven by a tidal effect. The model harbor is composed of a uniform water-depth with a straight breakwater. The harbor is connected to the outer ocean by an entrance region having the same shape as the harbor. We investigated two cases, one having another breakwater in the place between the entrance region and the outer ocean, and the other without it, The surface and bottom flow patterns of the model container are visualized by using light particles and dye, respectively. It was shown that the inner harbor and the entrance region have well-organized, large vortical residual flows, and the material transport between the entrance and outer region is however significantly different for two cases; when the breakwater is built between the two regions, the transport is far better than that without it, which is clearly contrary to our common sense that the breakwater would block the dispersion of the materials between the harbor and the outer ocean.
While the existing pile foundation had the role of supporting the superstructure or reducing the earth pressure, recently there are cases where it is integrated with the superstructure to increase the lateral resistance. This study aims to evaluate a lateral resistance of block-type breakwaters with group piles by modelling experiments. The lateral resistance and bending moments of the piles by penetrated depths for the piles were measured. As a result, it was found that the lateral resistance increased as the depth of embedment of the group piles. In particular, the lateral resistance was 1.52 times greater in the case where the pile embedded up to the riprap layer than the case where the pile was embedded into the block. For the bending moment, the rear piles ware larger than the front piles, and the outside piles were larger than the inside piles. The location of the maximum bending moment in the ground was shown at the interface between the riprap layer and the natural ground.

As the 2-D hydraulic experimental results for the submerged rubble-mound structure, we have concerned with their stability/function characteristics of structures by the effects of wave force, scour/deposition at the toe and wave transmission ratio at the lee-side sea. And as to investigate the variation characteristics of wave transmission ratio which depended to a geometrical structure of the submerged breakwater profiles, the critical conditions for the depth of submergence and crest width obviously presented. In summary, there results lead us to the conclusions that the wave control capabilities of submerged breakwaters by the variation of the submergence depth is high about 4 time degrees at the efficiency than the that of crest width. The destruction of covering block at the crest generated at the region which located between maximum damage curve, it maximum damage/failure station from the toe of the structure were 0.2L. As the wave transmission coefficient and the slope of the structure increase, the damage/failure ratio and the maximum scour depth at the toe was extended, respectively. When maximum scour depth happened. The destruction of covering block which located at the toe generated at the front slope destruction. Finally, it was found from the results that the optimization of structure may be obtained by the efficiently decision of the submergence depth and crest width in the permissible range of wave transmission ratio.

Redevelopment of the domestic small fishing ports is being started in earnest by applying the environmentally friendly technology in order to attract tourists. For the purpose of improving water quality in the harbor, selection of breakwater type might have the priority to secure calmness and stability. Therefore, this study is to determine the hydraulic characteristics of reflective ratio, installation efficiency and stability of the special type of blocks through the hydraulic model experiment. The results were introduced to analyze for the effect of infield construction work through numerical analysis. Gujora, a small fishing port in southern Korea, is affected by the waves of SSE, S, SSW direction and strong tidal currents. The results of applying cylindrical slit block show that stability of the blocks and harbor calmness were secured. Considering that the pass rate of a long period wave is still excellent, the primary objective of wave control and the secondary objective of improving water exchange are satisfied simultaneously.

Development of the reliability-based design program in the GUI environment is inadequate for engineers familiar with the deterministic design to deal with the international design criterion based on the probabilistic design. In this study, the design program based on the GUI environment is developed in order to more efficiently input the design factor and more easily carry out the design works. The GUI environment is the GUIDE (Graphic User Interface Development Environment) tool supported by the latest MATALB version 7.1. In order to test the model reliability, the probabilities of failure (POF) on the breakwater armor block (AB) and gravity quay-wall (QW) in the sliding mode are computed using the model in the Level II and Level III. The POF are 55.4~55.7% for breakwater AB and 0.0006~0.0007% for gravity QW. A non-GUI environment program results of the POF are 55.6% for breakwater AB and 0.0018% for gravity QW. In comparison, the POF difference is negligible for breakwater AB because the exact input design parameters are available, whereas the large POF difference, but within the same order, for gravity QW can be explained by the difference of the input design factors because of the poor input data information.

A Probabilistic neural network (PNN) technique for predicting the stability number for the armor blocks of breakwaters is presented. A PNN is prepared using the experimental data of van der Meer and is then compared with the empirical formula and previous artificial neural network (ANN) model. This comparison shows that a PNN can effectively predict the stability numbers in spite of data complexity, incompleteness, and incoherence, and can be an effective tool for the designers of rubble mound breakwaters to support their decision process and to improve design efficiency.

The present study investigates the behaviour of overtopping flows falling on the leeside of a caisson breakwater with dissipating blocks through laboratory measurements. The falling overtopping flows in the leeside are expected to directly affect the leeside stability of the breakwater. This study focuses on not the resultant stability but the characteristic pattern of the overtopping flows depending on wave conditions through examining front velocity and plunging distance in the leeside. Regular waves were used to investigate the dependence of the overtopping flow pattern on wave conditions and a modified image velocimetry combining the shadowgraphy and cross-correlation method was employed for measurements of image and velocity. From the measurements, it is shown that the plunging distance and front velocity of the overtopping flow in the breakwater leeside increase as the wave period or height increases. From non-dimensional relationships between the variables, empirical formula for the velocity and overtopping distance are suggested.

The paper presents a case study addressing the design and construction aspects for DCM(Deep Cement Mixing) method employed as the foundation of a caisson type breakwater with heavy weight(10,700 ton/EA) and a high design wave height($H_{1/3}$=8.7m). The DCM was designed for the project(Ulsan New Port North Breakwater Phase 1) by optimizing the pattern of DCM columns with a combination of short and long columns (i.e., block type(upper 3m)+wall type(lower)) and considering overlapped section between columns as a critical section against shear force where the coefficient of effective width of treated column($\alpha$) was estimated with caution. It was shown that the value can be 0.9 under the condition with the overlapped width of 30cm. In addition to that, a field trial test was performed after improving conventional DCM equipment (e.g., mixing blades, cement paste supplying pipes, multi auger motor, etc.) to establish a standardized DCM construction cycle (withdrawal rate of mixing blades) which can provide the prescribed strength. The result of the field strength test for cored DCM specimens shows that the averaged strength is larger than the target strength and the distribution of the strength(with a defect rate of 7%) also satisfies with the quality control normal distribution curve which allows defect rate of 15.9%.

Tetrapod has been used as the armor blocks of most rubble mound breakwaters constructed in Korea. The Hudson formula has been widely used in the design of breakwater armor blocks in Korea. In the present study, we calculate the load and resistance partial safety factors of the Hudson formula for Tetrapod armors. The partial safety factors were calculated for the typical breakwater cross-sections of 12 trade harbors and 8 coastal harbors in Korea. The mean and standard deviation of them were also calculated. The mean values were compared with the partial safety factors of US Army (2006). The load and resistance factors are slightly smaller and larger, respectively, than the US Army values. However, the overall safety factors obtained by multiplying the load and resistance factors are close to the US Army values. The result of the present study could be used as the basic data to propose authorized partial safety factors in the future.
