  • The degradation of image quality by block loss is more serious in fractal coded images with the error propagation due to mapping from the lost blocks than in DCT coded images. Therefore. a new algorithm is presented for recovering the blocks lost in the transmission through the lossy network as A TM network of the images coded by Jacquins fractal coding. Jacquins fractal code is divided into two layers of header code and main code according to its importance. The key technique of the proposed BLRA (block loss recovery algorithm) is a fractal extrapolation that estimates the lost pixels by using the contractive mapping parameters of the neighboring range blocks whose characteristics are similar to a lost block. The proposed BLRA is applied to the lost blocks in the iteration of decoding. Some experimental results show the proposed BLRA yields excellent performance in PSNR as well as subjective quality.

  • In bench blasting, rock fragmentation is one of the most important factors determining productivity. Rock fragmentation could be affected by various conditions and these were hewn that rock joint conditions and in-situ block sizes were the biggest effect on it. This research is focused on what or how to influence on rock fragmentation according to relation between blasting conditions and the in-situ rock conditions such as rock joint conditions and in-situ block size. Field measurements were carried out in 3 open pit limestone mines, where in-situ rock conditions and blasting conditions were fully investigated. The results show that the parameters interact with blasting conditions complicatedly and especially in-situ block size has bigger effects. Dip direction of major joint set also can affect on fragmentation. Mean fragment size become smallest when dip direction of major joint set is about $30^{\circ}$ with the bench direction. The reason is considered to be come from difference of propagation paths of elastic wave.

  • This paper proposes a high performance multiplier using CMOS multiple-valued logic circuits. The multiplier based on the Modified Baugh-Wooley algorithm is designed with current-mode CMOS quaternary logic circuits. The multiplier is functionally partitioned into the following major sections: partial product generator block(binary-quaternary logic conversion block), current-mode quaternary logic full-adder block, and quaternary-binary logic conversion block. The proposed multiplier has 4.5ns of propagation delay and 6.1mW of power consumption. This multiplier can easily adapted to the binary system by the encoder and the decoder. This circuit is designed with 0.35um standard CMOS process at 3.3V supply voltage and 5uA unit current. The validity and effectiveness are verified through the HSPICE simulation.

  • The next generation of wireless LAN AND PBX systems will make use of the unlicensecd band at 2.5 GHz. Deployment of these systems inside buildings requires and understanding of propagation characteristics within buildings. Because the wavelength is small compared to building dimensions, ray methods can be used to predict propagation, but they require knowledge of the transmission and reflection properties of walls. This paper reports on transmission measurements made at walls made of gypsum board on metal studs, and at concrete block walls using directive antennas. The measurements are found to give good agreement with theoretical results that account for the periodic nature of the wall structure.

  • Among the various zero suppression (ZS) algorithms used in a for synchronous stream cipher system, a ZS-2 exhibits certain good properties, including the omission of the block synchronization, easy implementation, etc., yet also a weakness in channel error propagation. Accordingly, This paper proposes a new method by minimizing the bit-wide substitution in the substitution blocks of ZS-2 to improve the degenerated error property in a noisy channel. As a result, the proposed ZS-3 algorithm can decrease the mean error propagation by about 18.7% over that of ZS-2 at n=8.

  • In this paper an efficient LT decoding scheme using GE triangularization is proposed. The proposed algorithm has the desirable performance in terms of both overhead and computational complexity. Belief propagation algorithm is a fast and simple decoding scheme for LT codes. However, for a small code block length k, it requires a large overhead to decode, and OFG which has a small overhead has a large computational complexity. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm noticeably reduces the computational complexity by more than 1/5 with respect to that of OFG and also its overhead has a small value about 1~5%.

  • The onset of convection in a mushy layer is analyzed by using linear stability theory in time-dependent solidification of a binary melt. A simplified model of a near-eutectic mush, in which the mush is assumed to be a porous block, is used and the propagation theory is applied to determine the critical conditions for the onset of convection. The present critical Rayleigh number is higher than the existing experimental result and also theoretical results obtained by considering the mushy layer with an overlying liquid layer. The constant pressure (permeable) condition applied on the mush-liquid interface produces a lower critical Rayleigh number, which is closer to the experimental results of aqueous ammonium chloride solution, compared with the impermeable condition.

  • We proposed and efficient block segmentation and classification method for the document analysis using SGLDM(spatial gray level dependence matrix) and BP (back Propagation) neural network. Seven texture features are extracted directly from the SGLDM of each gray-level block image, and by using the nonlinear classifier of neural network BP, we can classify document blocks into 9 categories. The proposed method classifies the equation block, the table block and the flow chart block, which are mostly composed of the characters, out of the blocks that are conventionally classified as non-character blocks. By applying Sobel operator on the gray-level document image beforebinarization, we can reduce the effect of the background noises, and by using the additional horizontal-vertical smoothing as well as the vertical-horizontal smoothing of images, we can obtain an effective block segmentation that does not lead to the segmentation into small pieces. The result of experiment shows that a document can be segmented and classified into the character blocks of large fonts, small fonts, the character recognigible candidates of tables, flow charts, equations, and the non-character blocks of photos, figures, and graphs.

  • The object of this study is to develop new examination techniques for detecting the debonds in adhesive interface of different kinds of the material. Ultrasonic signal was modeled by theoretically analyzing ultrasonic propagation phenomenon of the adhesive interface and debonding interface. The test method using the phase reversal of the debonding interface applied to the FRP/Rubber test block. Aluminum/Rubber test block with the flat bottom hole was manufactured to quantitatively evaluate the minimum detection ability of the defects. The pulse echo reflection method and the phase reversal method were mutually compared and it was estimated that the phase reversal method could detect the debonds on the basis of the theoretically predicted ultrasonic signal and ultrasonic test data.

  • Full-beads of multi-layer steel engine head gaskets that are used to seal the combustion gas between the head and the block are subject to cyclic bending stresses due to the variation of the head/block gap during engine operation. The S-N curve for the fatigue durability assessment of the full-bead formed on NBR-coated SUS301 thin plate is deduced from the axial fatigue test results because of the difficulty in conducting the bending fatigue test of thin plate. The experimental verification of the deduced S-N curve is presented. It is shown that the NBR coating increases the endurance limit of the plate significantly. Mechanism of crack nucleation and propagation in the full-bead is discussed with photographs of the fatigue cracks.
