  • Sulfonated polySEBS and sulfonated PS were synthesized by sulfonation at the aromatic group of polySEBS and PS. Novel sulfonated polySEBS/sulfonated PS blending films for the ion exchange membrane of polymer electrolyte fuel cell were prepared from these sulfonated polymers. The proton conductivities of these blending films were varied in $10^{-2}{\sim}10^{-3}S/cm$ with the blending ratio of sulfonated polySEBS/sulfonated PS. Especially, the film prepared from the addition of the sulfonated PS (0.5 g) in the sulfonated polySEBS (10.0 g) has the best proton conductivity (0.07 S/cm) with ion exchange capacity (0.75 meq/g) and water uptake (25%).

  • In this paper, we investigated the electrical properties change of 6,13-bis(triisopropyl-silylethynyl) pentacene (TIPS-pentacene) depending on polymer blend. We fabricated organic thin film transistor (OTFT) using blending solution of small molecule and polymer. In this study poly(2-methoxy-5-(2-ethyl-hexyloxy)-1,4-phenylene-vinylene) (MEH-PPV), poly (9-vinylcarbazole) (PVK), poly [N,N'-bis(4-butylphenyl)-N,N'-bis(phenyl)benzidine] (poly-TPD), poly(${\alpha}$-methyl styrene), Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) are used as a polymer. Fabricated OTFT with blending solution of TIPS-pentacene and PVK shows best performance in this experiment. OTFT fabricated by blending solution of TIPS-pentacene and PVK shows field effect mobility of 0.0189 $cm^2/V{\cdot}s$, on/off ratio of 1.9E-5 and threshold voltage of 7.4 V.

  • Several strains capable of degrading PEGs(Polyethylene Glycols) were isolated and investigated for their biodegradation ability of PEGs. Microorganisms screened for the biodegrada- tion studies were those grown on the PEG used as a sole carbon and energy source. It was known that the number of microorganisms decreased when grown on the high molecular weight of PEG. A biodegradation of PEG was investigated with such microorganisms in the reactor and resulted in the decrease in PEG concentration meaning that PEG was degraded in the reactor. This microorganism was identified as Flavobacterium sp. The biodegradability was found to be about 18.8% for PEG-8000 and 25.4% for PEG-10,000, respectively. For the manufacture of biodeg- radable PEG film, EMAA/PEG and EAA/PEG blending ability was investigated with IR spectrum and showed that it was possible to produce blending film.

  • Chitin is known as biodegradable natural polymer. But, in spite of various application of chitin from waste marine sources, commercial use of chitin has been limited due to highly resistance to chemicals and the absense of proper solvents. We made various viscosity of chitosan from chitin by change of Mima's method through the deacetylation which is various condition of NaOH concentration, reaction time and temperature. Also, Polyvinyl alcohol/chitosan blend films were prepared by different solution blends containing the ratio of 5, 10, 15 and 20% chitosan and low, medium, high molecular weight of chitosan to find a more useful biodegradable polymer. Thermal and mechanical properties of PVA/chitosan blend films such as DSC, impact strength, tensile strength and morphological changes by SEM were determined. The 10-15% PVA/chitosan(low, medium) blend films were similar to PVA. Also, PVA/chitosan blend films at the laboratory soil test(Pot Test) were completely degraded in month with four kinds of soils by microorganisms.

  • Structural and thermal characteristics of silk fibroin/poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate)(PHEMA) blend films were investigated using FTIR, X-ray diffractometer, differential scanning calorimeter, thermogravimeter and scanning electron microscope. FTIR spectra showed that the conformation of silk fibroin prepared by dissolving in formic acid was $\beta$-sheet, which did not affected by blending with PHEMA. The X-ray diffraction patterns also showed that individual crystalline structure of silk fibroin and PHEMA was not affected for the blend films. The initial thermal decomposition temperature of silk fibroin/PHEMA blend film tends to be higher than either of silk fkbroin or PHEMA. Thermal stability of both polymers, more notably PHEMA, can be improved by blending two components. As a result of SEM observation, the phases separation for silk fibroin/PHEMA blend films occured regardless of blend ratio ; continuous and dispersed phase were silk fibroin and PHEMA component, respectively.

  • Time-Of-Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (TOF-SIMS) and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) are the useful instruments to measure nanostructures of material surfaces. Surface pattern formation in blending homopolymer and diblock copolymer films was investigated as a function of film thickness and annealing conditions. In this study, surface structures of blending homopolymer [deuterated polystyrene (Mn 20,000), poly (methyl methacrylate) (Mn 18,000)] and diblock copolymer [Poly (deuteratedstyrene(d8)-b-methyl methacrylate) (Mn 19,500-18,100)] films were observed. The AFM result indicated that the nanostructures and film thickness depended on temperature, concentration and solvent. TOF-SIMS depth profiling was obtained for the lamellar morphology of symmetric dPS-b-PMMA which is found to orient parallel to the surface of the substrate. Elemental and molecular depth profiles measured in the negative ion mode by a Cs+ primary ion beam demonstrate variations in hydrogen, deuterium, carbon, oxygen, hydrocarbons and deuterated hydrocarbons within the diblock copolymer according to the depth.

  • The effects of packaging materials on preserving the functional component of pine bud beverage stored under UV (ultraviolet) light exposure conditions were studied. The order of UV light blocking properties of the selected packages was: opaque can> opaque PET (polyethylene terepthalate) with green lamination=transparent PET with 10% PEN (polyethylene naphthalate) blending> transparent PET, and did not depend on film thickness in specified range. At 20${^{\circ}C}$, the order of preserving degree of original color and endobornyl acetate, which is quality index of pine bud beverage, was the same as above. Exposure to UV light can cause of deterioration of functional food components, but green color lamination and blending of PEN materials with transparent PET help to preserve the UV sensitive pine bud beverage components. However, the treated PET bottles have poorer preservation capabilities than the opaque cans. Transparent PET with PEN blending, in particular, will be very useful packaging material for colorful functional beverage preservation by helping to protect the ingredients while attracting consumer attention.

  • In this study, random polypropylene (rPP) was compounded with two of monoglycerides, namely, glyceryl monolaurate (GML) and glyceryl monostearate (GMS), as antifogging agents to improve its antifogging performance. rPP film samples were prepared by a film-casting method using a three-roll casting machine after melt blending through a twin screw extruder. With an increase in the monoglyceride content, the melt flow index for rPP films with GML and GMS increased, and their yield strength decreased. The incorporation of GMS in rPP was proven to be more effective in improving its physical properties than was rPP with GML. When GML and GMS were separately added to the rPP film at contents of more than 1 phr and more than 5 phr, respectively, the film exhibited antifogging performance.

  • The applicability of chitosan, a biodegradable natural polymer, as the coating material to prevent the dispersal of the spores of the apple white rot agent Botryosphaeria dothidea, was investigated. The physical properties of mixed chitosan/polyvinyl alcohol(PVA) film showed the increased physical properties for film formation, such as tensil strength, elongation, and viscosity, compared to either chitosan or PVA film. The FT-IR spectra of chitosan/PVA film indicated that the film was formed by simple blending not by any new synthetic bond. The chitosan and chitosan/PVA film showed effective antifungal activity on B. dothidea. The formed films were well decomposed by ASTM strains used for biodegradability test, on the other hand, the PVA film could not be decomposed by above standard strains. The field test at apple orchard showed that the dispersal of B. dothidea spores could be effectively reduced by coated film, especially by chitosan/PVA film. The spore dispersal was reduced upto 97.0% by 1.0% chitosan/5.0% PVA film during 4 months.
