  • Blend films based on the poly($\varepsilon$-caprolactone) (PCL) and amphiphilic biodegradable polymer, poly(ethylene glycol) grafted poly($\varepsilon$-caprolactone) (PCL-g- PEG), were prepared with different blend ratios in order to develop new biomedical material. PCL was the main component in the blend. The miscibility and characteristics of the blends were investigated. The crystallization temperature of the blend shifted to high temperatures with an increase of the graft copolymer contents when the homopolymer PCL was the main component of the blend. The PEG side chain in the blend affected the crystallization rate of the PCL crystals in the blend and alternating extinction bands were observed by optical microscopy. The protein adhesion behavior of the film was influenced by the water uptake of the film.

  • Structure and characteristic of the films blended chitosan matrix with silk fibroin, extracted from Bombyx mori, were studied by X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry, FT-IR spectra analysis, SEM photographs, contact angle measurement and water absorbency in order to use as biomaterials. The blend films of $0\~30 wt\%$ fibroin content were prepared in acetic solution with $Li^+$ ion. It was found that the crystallinity of chitosan/fibroin blend films was decreased by the presence of intermolecular interactions such as hydrogen bonding between animo groups of chitosan and carbonyl groups of fibroin. As the proportion of fibroin in the blend increased, anhydrous crystalline phase of chitosan disappeared, and hydrated crystalline phase decreased, and $\beta$-structure crystalline phase of fibroin was formed. Therefore the blend films were crystallized into two different crystalline region of chitosan and fibroin. Surface hydrophilicity and water absorbency increased with blending fibroin. Above 20 $wt\%$ fibroin content, hydrogel film was formed. The surface and section of the film showed uniform microstructure on SEM photographs.

  • PLA(polylactic acid), one of biodegradable polymers was blended with various amounts of wood pulp powder through solution blending technic to verify the effect of reinforcing pulp amount on the mechanical properties of blend films. Also these blend films were further modified with TDI(toluene diisocyanate) as crosslinking agent to introduce urethane functions by reaction of pulp hydroxyl groups and isocyanate. As a result, the tensile strength of blend film with 0.25 wt% pulp was increased from $565.25kg_f/cm^2$ for PLA film itself to $624.20kg_f/cm^2$. However, elongation of this film was decreased by 50% of that of PLA film itself. Only PLA/pulp blend film further modified with 500% of TDI/0.25 wt% pulp showed the slightly increased tensile strength but decreased elongation. Melting point and glass transition temperature of PLA/pulp blend films were confirmed by using Differential Scanning Calorimeter(DSC). Thermal stability of these blend films measured by TGA showed only a slight increase at temperature lower than $300^{\circ}C$.

  • In this paper, the regenerated silk fibroin (SF)/hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) blend filaments were prepared by wet spinning and the effect of HPMC concentration on the post drawing and morphology of blend filaments was elucidated. The result of maximum draw ratio indicated that the wet spinnability of wet spun SF / HPMC was improved with increasing HPMC concentration until 8% and remained constant after that concentration. The SEM observation revealed that the enhanced wet spinnability of blend filaments was strongly related to the morphological change by increasing HPMC concentration. Regardless of HPMC concentration, as SF content was reduced, the wet spinnability of blend film decreased resulting in reduced maximum draw ratio. It was also found by SEM observation that the cross section of blend filament deviated from circularity with an increase of HPMC content.

  • In this work, profound microscale behaviors of block copolymer and polymer blend under electric field were investigated using microscopic methods and compared systematically. To this end, both the block copolymer and blend containing polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) were introduced. The two polymers have a similar dielectric constant. Under an identical experimental condition such as temperature, film thickness, field intensity, and exposure time, the polymer blend responded more sensitively than the block copolymer. The presence of covalent bond suppressed the mobility of constituents in block copolymer. This study will be essential for future research activities regarding behaviors of polymeric materials under external fields.

  • Algin and chitosan are known as biodegradable natural polymers. PVA is useful for the production of water soluble packaging, paper, textile sizes. PVA/Algin and PVA/chitosan films were prepared by solution blends method in the weight ratio of chitosan, algin for the purpose of useful biodegradable films. Thermal and mechanical properties of blend films such as DSC, impact strength, tensile strength and morphology by SEM were determined. As a result, The ratio of 10.0wt% PVA/chitosan films were similar to PVA at thermal and mechanical properties. PVA/Algin films were found that phase separation was occured as more than 25wt% increasing the blend ratio of algin. PVA/Algin films were observed to be less partially compatibility than 10wt% increasing the blend ratio of algin by DSC, mechanical properties and SEM. Blend films were completely degraded pH 4.0 better than 7.0, 10.0 in the buffer solution. Also, they were rapidly degraded in the enzyme( glucosidase) solution better than pH solution by enzymolysis.

  • To manufacture of a completely biodegradable and compostable biomass -based blend polymer film, two types of cellulose acetates(DS=2.4 and DS=2.7) were blended with 5 - 50 wt% of low average molecular weight polylactide(PLA) by mixing each polymer solution having same viscosity in 10 wt% methanol/dichloromethane. Their surface morphology, thermal and mechanical properties were studied. The chemical structures of blend films were confirmed by the fourier transform IR spectroscopy with attenuated total reflection(FT-IR ATR) spectrophotometer. Scanning electron microscope(SEM) photos of blend films of both CAs with less than 5 % of PLA showed homogeneous morphology. On the contrary, the other blends with higher than 20 wt% of PLA content showed a large phase separation with spherical domains. The thermal property of blend films was also analyzed with thermogravimetric analysis(TGA) and differential scanning calorimeter(DSC). The tensile strength of CA/PLA blend films was increased up to $820kg_f/cm^2$ for TAC/PLA and $600kg_f/cm^2$ for DAC/PLA.

  • The molecular interactions of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and cellulose acetate (CA) were investigated thoroughly via dilute solution viscometry in dimethylformamide (DMF) as a common solvent at $30^{\circ}C$. The intrinsic viscosities and viscometric interaction parameters were experimentally determined for both binary (polymer/dimethylformamide) and ternary (PAN/CA/dimethylformamide) systems. As all investigated PAN/CA ternaries evidenced negative viscometric interaction parameter values $({\Delta}b\;&{\Delta}k<0)$, the existence of repulsive intermolecular interactions was deduced, and PAN/CA blends were assigned as immiscible. Moreover, the results of microscopy photograph analysis indicated that pure PAN film evidences a homophasic structure, and the size of the phase domain increases gradually with increases in CA. In DSC analysis, it was determined that the glass transition temperature of the blend film increased slightly with increases in the CA content of the blend film.

  • In order to investigate the characteristics of the gradient fluorinated polyacrylate and polyurethane latex blend films, the fluorinated polyacrylate emulsion and the polyurethane emulsion were synthesized, and then the both emulsions were blended at a series of ratios. The effects of content of the fluorinated polyacrylate on the gradient structure and surface property of the blended films were assessed by AFM, XPS, SEM-EDX and surface free energy measurements. It appeared that, while the content of the fluorinated polyacrylate latex was up to 30%, the fluorinated polyacrylate particles were selectively gathered on the film-air (F-A) and film-glass (F-G) interfaces at room temperature. When the content of the fluorinated polyacrylate was under 30%, the gradient structure of fluorinated component was not evident. The further increasing of fluorinated polyacrylate in the mixed system facilitated the formation and enlargement of gradient structure, but the adhesion of film decreased a little.
