In this paper, we present the result of an analytical investigation concerning the demolition range for the pre-weakening of load-bearing wall in explosive demolition. Pre-weakening of load-bearing wall is usually conducted based on field experience because reliable specifications or guidelines for the design of pre-weakening have not yet been established in Korea. This study is one of the efforts to develop such a reliable specification or guideline for the pre-weakening process. Hence, the focus of the study is on the estimation of pre-weakening range of load-bearing wall. For the purpose, a finite element analysis (FE analysis) was conducted, and a pre-weakening range of load-bearing wall was suggested based on the analysis result.
The dynamic behaviour of the rock mass under the dynamic load is different from the static application of the maximum load of the same size. An experimental approach to investigating rock behavior under dynamic loads is more difficult than that under static conditions in control of dynamic loads, measurement and analysis of the results. Numerical methods are less constrained by performing the experiments numerically, rather than experimental ones, so they can be very powerful analytical tool at the design stage. However, even if the algorithms of the analysis method are appropriate, careful analysis is required because the calculation results may vary largely depending on input data and boundary conditions. In this paper, when investigating the behavior of rock structures under dynamic load numerically, the effects of boundary conditions, dynamic load and calculation time step, and dynamic load characteristics on the calculation results were reviewed to provide guidance on setting up boundary conditions and calculation time step related to dynamic analysis.
With the increase of expansion and use of the underground space, the possibility of an underground explosion by terrorists is increasing. In this study, after modeling a circular tunnel excavated at a depth of 50m, an explosion load was applied to the inside of the tunnel. As for the explosion load, the explosion load of the maximum explosive amount for six types of vehicle booms proposed by ATF (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms) was calculated. For the rock mass around the circular tunnel, three types of rock grades were selected according to the support pattern suggested in the domestic tunnel design. Nonlinear dynamic analysis was performed to evaluate the influence of the ground structure by examining the surface displacement using the explosion load and rock mass characteristics as parameters. As a result of the analysis, for grade 1 rock, the influence on the uplift of the surface should be considered, and for grade 2 and 3 rocks, the influence on a differential settlement should be considered. In particular, for grade 3 rocks, detailed analysis is required for ground-structure interaction within 40m. Also, it is considered that the influence of Young's modulus is the main factor for the surface displacement.
Concrete dams are important structures due to retaining amount of water on their reservoir. So such kind of structures have to be designed against static and dynamic loads. Especially considering on critical importance against blasting threats and environmental safety, dams have to be examined according to the blast loads. This paper aims to investigate structural response of concrete gravity dams under blast loads. For the purpose Sarıyar Concrete Gravity Dam in Turkey is selected for numerical application with its 85 m of reservoir height (H), 255 m of reservoir length (3H), 72 m of bottom and 7 m of top widths. In the study, firstly 3D finite element model of the dam is constituted using ANSYS Workbench software considering dam-reservoir-foundation interaction and a hydrostatic analysis is performed without blast loads. Then, nearly 13 tons TNT explosive are considered 20 m away from downstream of the dam and this is modeled using ANSYS AUTODYN software. After that explicit analyses are performed through 40 milliseconds. Lastly peak pressures obtained from analyses are compared to empirical equations in the literature and UFC 3-340-02 standard which provide unified facilities criteria for structures to resist the effects of accidental explosions. Also analyses' results such as displacements, stresses and strains obtained from both hydrostatic and blasting analysis models are compared to each other. It is highlighted from the study that blasting analysis model has more effective than the only hydrostatic analysis model. So it is highlighted from the study that the design of dams should be included the blast loads.
This study is to clarify the comparative relationship and a mechanical anisotropy of rock on the subject of granite distributed in the Namwon area Uniaxial compressive and Brazilian strengths with respect to the horizontal and vertical axes of granite are shown the linear relation. In the case of the result of the p-wave velocity measurement. it is represented that the velocity of vortical direction is faster about 10 to 15% than other two horizontal directions. The difference between velocities is caused by a developmental pattern of microcracks distributed in rock. Moreover, this result is very consistent with the result investigated through thin sections. The proportion of uniaxial compression strength to Index of point load strength ($Is_{(50)}$) is 18~20 times in case of granite. Uniaxial compressive strength is relatively good relationship with point load strength, Schmidt hammer rebound value, and tensile strength point load strength of them is the best comparative relationship. It is indicated that point load test is the most useful tool to estimate uniaxial compressive strength, comparing with other experimental methods.
Statement of problem : Fracture of composite resin core will be occulted by progress of crack. Bonding interface of different materials has large possibility of starting point of crack line. Therefore, the bond strength of glass fiber post to composite resin core is important for prevention of fracture. Purpose: This in vitro study tried to find out how to get the higher strength of glass fiber post to composite resin core through surveying the maximum load that fractures the post and cote complex. Materials and methods: 40 specimens made with glass fiber Posts(Style $post^{(R)}$, Metalor, Swiss) and composite resin core ($Z-100^{(R)}$, 3M, USA) were prepared and loaded to failure with push-out type shear-bond strength test in a universal test machine. The maximum fracture load and fracture mode were investigated in the specimens that were restored with four different surface treatments. With the data. ANOVA test was used to validate the significance between the test groups, and Bonferroni method was used to check if there is any significant statistical difference between each test group. Evely analysis was approved with 95% reliance. Results: On measuring the maximum fracture load of specimens, both the treatments of sandblasted and acid-etched one statistically showed the strength increase rather than the control group (p<0.005). The scanning electric microscope revealed that sand blasting made more micro-retention form not only on the resin matrix but on the glass fiber, and acid-etching contributed to increase in surface retention form, eliminated the inorganic particles in resin matrix. Specimen fracture modes investigation represented that sand blasted groups showed lower bonding failure than no-sand blasted groups. Conclusion: Referring to the values of maximum fracture load of specimens, the bonding strength was increased by sand blasting and acid-etching.
In recent decades, the protection and vulnerability of civil structures under explosion loads became a critical issue in terms of security, which may cause loss of lives and structural damage. Concrete retaining walls also restrict soils and slopes from displacements; meanwhile, intensive temporary loading may cause massive damage. In the current study, the modified Johnson-Holmquist (also known as J-H2) material model is implemented for concrete materials to model damages into the ABAQUS through user-subroutines to predict the blasting-induced concrete damages and volume strains. For this purpose, a 3D finite-element model of the concrete retaining wall was conducted in coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian simulation. Subsequently, a blast load equal to 500 kg of TNT was considered in three different positions due to UFC 3-340-02. Influences of the critical parameters in smooth blastings, such as distance from a free face, position, and effective blasting time, on concrete damage rate and destroy patterns, are explored. According to the simulation results, the concrete penetration pattern at the same distance is significantly influenced by the density of the progress environment. The result reveals that the progress of waves and the intensity of damages in free-air blasting is entirely different from those that progress in a dense surrounding atmosphere such as soil. Half-damaged elements in air blasts are more than those of embedded explosions, but dense environments such as soil impose much more pressure in a limited zone and cause more destruction in retaining walls.
A locally damaged structure is a structure that cannot be reused due to having parts that have lost their structural function as a result of abnormal load across the interior or exterior of the structure. The causes of the abnormal load occurrences can be classified into natural disaster and artificial disaster. Locally damaged structures caused by this abnormal load have risk factors that may lead to the possibility of additional secondary collapses, so such structures require immediate and complete dismantling. The case presented in this study involves the application of explosive demolition to a steel truss structured bridge in the Philippines that was damaged due to construction failures and the hurricane. Although shaped charges were needed in explosive demolitions, difficulties in locally obtaining such material. So, we made a charge container to charging of emulsion explosive during the explosive demolition. The explosive demolition resulted in the vertical free fall of the mid-section of the bridge and the free fall rotating of the both end section of the bridge. The neighboring posts and bridge piers did not show signs of damages, while post-demolition fragmentation of removed parts was found to be satisfactory.
To make large slopes or rock structures stable, supporting systems, such as anchor bolt, rock bolt and spiral bolt which are developed recently, are commonly used. In this study, in-situ pull-out tests were carried out to compare the characteristics of rock bolt that is most widely used with ones of spiral bolt that is newly developed. Re-pull-out test for the spiral bolt in which loading and unloading cycles are repeated three times showed that the maximum pull-out load is almost constant irrespective of the number of loading cycles, which may be due to no failure between spiral bolt and filler. On the other hand, the maximum pull-out load for the conventional rock bolt decreases with the number of loading cycles due to the partial failure between rock bolt and filler.

Blast cleaning has been applied in steel bridges for cleaning forged surface and increasing adhesive property of applied coating systems. Blasting is the operation of cleaning or preparing a surface by forcible propelling a stream of abrasive metals against it. Blast cleaning may improve surface geometry and induce compressive residual stress, and eventually may increase fatigue life of weld joints. In this paper, fatigue tests were carried out on three types of non-load-carrying fillet welded cruciform joints, as-welded joints, blast-treated joints, and stress-relieved joints after blasting, in order to investigate effect of blast cleaning on fatigue behavior of the weld joints. By Blast cleaning, the weld toe radius was increased by 29% and compressive residual stress was induced near weld toes. Blast cleaning increased fatigue life and fatigue endurance limit of the weld joints. When the applied stress ranges decreased, the increment in fatigue life became larger. About a 150% increase in fatigue limit could be realized by using blast cleaning.
