  • The dynamics of gas-particle flow from a supersonic abrasive blasting nozzle have been studied by 1-D analytical calculation, including wall friction effects inside the nozzle. The developed code in the present study shows a satisfactory agreement with the other study's results. By utilizing the code, the redesign and optimization of the inner contour of a commercial abrasive blasting nozzle were carried out, and it was found that the redesigned nozzle in the present study can produce faster particle velocities at the nozzle exit by up to 22% compared with the original commercial nozzle.

  • The mechanical etching technique has recently been developed to a powder blasting technique for various materials, capable of producing micro structures larger than 100$\mu$ m. This paper describes the performance of powder blasting technique in micro-pocketing of stainless steel and the effect of the number of nozzle scanning and the nozzle height on the depth and width of pockets. Experimental results showed that increasing the no. of nozzle scanning and decreasing the nozzle height resulted in the increase of depth and width in pockets. Increase of width results from wear of mask film.

  • The old technique of sandblasting which has been used for decoration of glass surface has recently been developed into a powder blasting technique for brittle materials such as glass, silicon and ceramics, capable of producing micro structures larger than $100{\mu}$ m. This paper describes the performance of powder blasting technique in micro-line grooving of glass and the effect of the number of nozzle scanning on the depth and width of line groove. Experimental results showed that increasing the no. of nozzle scanning resulted in the increase of depth and width in grooves. Increase of width which may cause several problems in the precision machining results from wear of mask film. Therefore, well-controlled masking process is the most important factor for micro machining of glass with accuracy.

  • An experimental study of micro blasting for a rotating aluminum rod was conducted through the statistical analysis of ANOVA to obtain the effect of blasting conditions. The rotating equipment was designed and constructed with forward and backward moving for helical blasting, but rotation was used in this study. The blasting condition factors were the type of abrasive particle, nozzle diameter, pressure, standoff distance, injection time, etc. The width of the surface, the maximum depth of the sprayed surface, and ANOVA were analyzed by statistical analysis. The results showed that the contributions of the main factors were pressure, nozzle diameter, and injection particle.

  • A study on the micro particle blasting was conducted to find the optimum conditions of the blasted surface of aluminum 6061. The particle type such as $Al_2O_3$ and SiC, nozzle diameter, pressure, standoff distance and injection time were used as blasting conditions. Statistical method of orthogonal arrays(ANOVA) was used to find optimum conditions of maximum depth and maximum diameter of blasted surface. Particle type, nozzle diameter, and pressure were found to be the main factors of maximum blasted depth and diameter. Maximum blasted diameter was affected by increasing pressure and nozzle diameter but saturated maximum diameter. Maximum blasted depth was affected by pressure and nozzle diameter when aluminum 6061 was blasted with $Al_2O_3$ particle. The value of surface roughness was increased as pressure and nozzle diameter increased when aluminum 6061 was blasted with SiC.

  • In the present work, a numerical study is carried out to observe the characteristics of the flow and particle behaviors in a supersonic double Venturi abrasive blasting nozzle. Schlieren flow visualization and Pitot pressure at the nozzle downstream are also carried out, and those measurement results are compared to the numerical ones for code validation. Open and closed secondary holes on the double Venturi nozzle surface are tested for various nozzle pressures, and the results are compared with the ones observed for other similar supersonic Laval nozzles.

  • An experimental study has been carried out to improve the performance of a commercial abrasive blasting nozzle, by simply redesigning the nozzle's inner contour. The analytical 1-D code, that can evaluate both the frictional effects on the nozzle inner wall and the sphericity effects of the particle, is utilized to calculate the dynamics of the particle inside the nozzle. The analytical results are compared to the experimental ones, that were obtained from images of the particle streaklines downstream from the nozzle exit. It is noted that the particle velocity at the redesigned nozzle exit increases as compared to the original commercial nozzle.

  • In this study, a blasting nozzle was designed based on incompressible flow analysis to clean wide surface of parts used in power plant. The outlet side section of the designed nozzle has a wide bore with a linear shape. After the design, the nozzle prototype was made by three dimensional printing, and the cleaning performance test was performed after mounting it on the blasting machine. The wide bore size obtained after the analysis was almost the same as the wide bore size obtained from the surface of the plate specimen after the experiment. Ultimately, it was confirmed that the design of blasting nozzle for wide surface treatment is effective.
