  • Twelve mortars were mixed and tested to explore the effect of gypsum on the compressive strength development and shrinkage strain of alkali-activated mortars. Powder typed sodium silicate and ground granulated blast-furnace slag were employed as alkaline activator and source material, respectively, to produce cementless mortar. The main variables investigated were alkali quality coefficient combining the concentration of activator and main compositions in source material, and the adding amount of gypsum ranged between 1 and 5% with respect to the weight of binder. Initial flow, compressive strength development, modulus of rupture, and shrinkage strain behavior of mortar specimens were measured. In addition, the hydration production of alkali-activated pastes with gypsum was traced using X-ray diffraction and energy-dispersive X-ray analysis combined with scanning electron microscope image. Test results showed that the initial flow of slag-based alkali-activated mortar was little influenced by the adding amount of gypsum. On the other hand, the effect of gypsum on the compressive strength of mortar specimens was dependent on the alkali quality coefficient, indicating that the compressive strength increased with the increase of the adding amount of gypsum until a certain limit, beyond which the strength decreased slowly. Shrinkage strain of mortar tested was little influenced by the adding amount of gypsum because no ettringite as hydration product was generated. However, the adding of gypsum had a beneficial effect on reducing the microcrack in the alkali-activated mortar.

  • We propose a visualization method to respond to civil complaints through an analysis of the impact of blasting. In order to analyze the impact of blasting on tunnel excavation, we propose a simulation visualization method considering the mutual influence of the construction infrastructure by linking measurement data and 3D BIM model. First, the level of BIM modeling required for simulation was defined. In addition, vibration measurement data were collected for the GTX-A construction site, terrain and structure BIM were created, and a method for visualizing measurement data using blast vibration estimation was developed. Next, a spherical blasting influence source library was developed for visualization of the blasting influence source, and a specification table that could be linked with Revit Dynamo automation logic was constructed. Using this result, a method for easily visualizing the impact analysis of blasting vibration in 3D was proposed.

  • In this study, normal wind load and blast wind load are modeled mathematical. And the periodical torque and bending moments transmitted to the main shaft of wind turbine are investigated. A normal wind model assumed, of which the wind velocity is increased according to the height from ground. The average values and the harmonic terms of the transmitted moments are studied on the wind direction of range $-45^{\circ}{\sim}45^{\circ}$ and the bending moment characteristics are examined, which is regarded as the main source of the misalignment of gear train. In normal wind load case, excitation frequency is 3X (X : Rotor speed). When the wind direction is $+22.5^{\circ}$, the horizontal axis of bending moment occur the 50% of main torque. This result leads to edge contact of gear teeth by shaft elastic deformation. In blast wind load case, excitation frequency are 3X,6X,9X. Additional, in the (+) direction of wind load, relative harmonic percentage is increase.

  • Power plant is a kind of basic industrial facility and might cause fatal industrial and human damage. In this study, the characteristics and effect of blast-induced vibration for tunnelling which underpass ○○ power plant in operation were evaluated. Previous blasting cases adjacent to industrial facilities were intensively reviewed, then allowable vibration criteria were suggested. 3 dimensional dynamic numerical analysis based on finite element method was performed to investigate particle velocity and resonance was examined by calculating the predominant frequencies. As a result, particle velocity at pump foundation which is nearest to the source was approached to the allowable criteria, therefore, the modified blasting pattern was newly suggested and confirmed the attenuation effect based on the test blasting. Consequently, appropriated decision-support procedure was established in case of adjacent blasting to industrial facilities.

  • Shirasu, a pyroclastic flow deposit, showed considerable performance as aluminosilicate source in geopolymer, based on past research. However, the polymerization reactivity was somewhat lower compared to the traditional fly ash based geopolymer even though the long-term strength was fairly good. The present study concentrates on the development of higher initial strength performance of Shirasu based geopolymer by utilizing ground granulated blast furnace slag as an admixture. Mortars with various mix proportions were adopted to study the effect of parametric changes on strength development along with the addition of slag in different percentages. A combination of sodium hydroxide and sodium silicate was used as alkaline activators considering parameters like molar ratios of alkali to geopolymer water and silica to alkali molar ratio. The mortars were cured at elevated temperatures under different curing conditions to analyze the effect on strength development. Compressive strength test, mercury intrusion porosimetry and X-ray powder diffraction were carried out to assess the strength performance and microstructure of slag-Shirasu based geopolymer. Based on the experimental study, it was observed that the initial and long-term strength development of Slag-Shirasu geopolymer were improved by the addition of slag.

  • Autogenous healing of concrete can be helpful in structural maintenance by healing cracks using a healing material created by the precipitation of calcite and by the hydration of unhydrated binder around the cracks. Against this backdrop, this study investigated the physicochemical properties and autogenous healing performance of ternary blended binder composed of ordinary Portland cement (OPC), blast furnace slag (BFS), and calcium sulfoaluminate (CSA) clinker. Ternary blended binders with various contents of OPC-BFS-CSA clinker were prepared, and their physicochemical properties and autogenous healing performances were examined using various analytical techniques and visually observed using a microscope. The obtained results indicated that increase in the BFS content accompanied the increased the amount of unreacted BFS even after 28 days of curing and had a positive effect on the autogenous healing performance due to its latent hydration. However, replacing the CSA clinker did not increase the autogenous healing performance owing to an insufficient sulfate source for the formation of ettringite. The main precipitates around the cracks were calcite, C-S-H. Other hydration products such as portlandite, monosulfate, and ettringite, which were not found in the Raman and scanning electron microscope analyses.

  • Korea Institute of Geology Mining and Materials(KIGAM) cooperating with Southern Methodist University(SMU) has been operating seismo-acoustic array in Chul-Won area to discriminate man-made explosions from natural earthquakes since at the end of July 1999. In order to characterize propagation parameters of detected seismo-acoustic signal and to associate these signals as a blast event accompanying seismic and acoustic signals simultaneously it is necessary to understand infrasound wave propagation in the atmosphere. Two comparable Effective Sound Velocity Structures(ESVS) in atmosphere were constructed by using empirical model (MSISE90 and HWM93) and by aerological observation data of Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) at O-San area. Infrasound propagation path computed by empirical model resulted in rare arival of refracted waves on ground less than 200km from source region. On the other hand Propagation paths by KMA more realistic data had various arrivals at near source region and well agreement with analyzed seismo-acoustic signals from Chul-Won data. And infrasound propagation in specific direction was very influenced by horizontal wind component in that direction. Linear travel time curve drawn up by 9 days data of the KMA in autumn season showed 335.6m/s apparent sound velocity in near source region. The propagation characteristics will be used to associate seismo-acoustic signals and to calculate propagation parameters of infrasound wave front.

  • The objective of this study was to attest the feasibility of the utilization of the blast furnace slag, quenched with water as a source of silicate fertilizer. A pot experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of quenched slag and its particle size distribution on rice plant growth over the corresponding air-cooled slag of milled commercial silicate fertilizer. The yields of rice were slightly higher in quenched slag than in the commericial air-cooled slag, however, no significant statistical difference was observed. The silica content of rice plants through the growing period was high in quenched slag in any tested particle sizes. This indicated that the quenched slag might release silica fastly in soil. On the other hand, the available silica content retained in soil was high in air cooled slag, which implied that the silica of air-cooled slag was low acting. The results suggested that the quenched slag may be potentially utilized as a source of silicate fertilizer.

  • This paper was prepared to characterize a physico-chemical and mineralogical examination on blast furnace slag as a source of silicate fertilizer, which was quenched with high pressure water stream in process of iron refinery at Pohang Iron and Steel Manufacturing Inc. Quenched slag was more coarse in particle size compared to present commercial silicate fertilizer milled from air-cooled slag and mostly generated in size of 1 to 2 mm. The total chemical composition of quenched and air-cooled slags was same but mineralogical composition was quite different. The former was composed of amorphous materials resulting in more soluble silica content, however, the latter contained dominantly crystalline minerals such as akermanite, gehlenite and wollastonite which meant less soluble ones. Latent cementing property and angular surface of gain of the slag made it difficult to apply the slag directly, however, it could be used as a source of silicate fertilizer and soil ammendment.
