The present study aims to present a comprehensive understanding of the performance of neighboring multi-story buildings with different dynamic characteristics under blast loads. Two different scenarios are simulated in terms of explosion locations with respect to both buildings. To investigate the effect of interaction between the neighboring buildings in terms of the induced responses, the separation gap is set to be sufficiently small to ensure collisions between stories. An adequately large separation gap is set between the buildings to explore responses without collisions under the applied blast loads. Several blast loads with different peak pressure intensities are employed to perform the dynamic analysis. The finite-element toolbox Computer Aided Learning of the Finite-Element Method (CALFEM) is used to develop a MATLAB code to perform the simulation analysis. The dynamic responses obtained in the scenarios considered herein are presented comparatively. It is found that the obtained stories' responses are governed mainly by the location and intensity of the applied blast loads, separation distances, and flexibility of the attacked structures. Moreover, explosions near a light and flexible building may lead to a significant decrease in blast resistance because explosions severely influence the dynamic responses of the building's stories.
In this study, the device was developed for evaluating the effect of pressure on chloride ion penetration of concrete. And chloride-ion penetration depth and water soluble chloride contents was evaluated concrete using ordinary portland cement and blast-furnace slag cement using developed device. As a result, chloride ion penetration of concrete was promoted according to the action of pressure and the exposure period. and the incorporation of blast-furnace slag was effective for chloride attack resistibility under pressure.
Since blast-induced vibration may cause serious problem to the rock mass as well as the nearby structures, the prediction of blast-induced vibration and the stability evaluation must be performed before blasting activities. Dynamic analysis has been Increased recently in order to analyze the effect of the blast-induced vibration. Most of the previous studies, however, were based on the continuum analysis unable to consider rock joints which significantly affect the wave propagation and attenuation characteristics. They also adopted pressure curves estimated by theoretical or empirical equations as input detonation load, thus there were very difficult to reflect the characteristics of propagating media. In this study, therefore, we suggested a discontinuum dynamic analysis technique which uses velocity waveform obtained from a test blast as an input detonation load. A distinct element program, UDEC was used to consider the effect of rock joints. In order to verify the validity of proposed method, the test blast was simulated. The predicted results from the proposed method showed a good agreement with the measured vibration data from the test blast Through the dynamic numerical modelling on the planned road tunnel and slope, we evaluated the effect of blast-induced vibration and the stability of rock slope.
This paper presents a study to reduce the effect of blast pressure on the blast valves installed in protection tunnels, where the shape of the tunnel entrance and the blast pocket is optimized based on the predetermined basic shape of the protective tunnels. The reliability of the numerical tunnel models was examined by performing analyses of mesh convergence and overpressure stability and with comparison to the data in blast-load design charts in UFC 3-340-02 (DoD, 2008). An optimal mesh size and a stabilized distance of overpressure were proposed, and the numerical results were validated based on the UFC data. A parametric study to reduce the blast overpressures in tunnel was conducted using the validated numerical model. Analysis was performed applying 1) the entrance slope of 90, 75, 60, and 45 degrees, 2) two blast pockets with the depth 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 times the tunnel width, 3) the three types of curved back walls of the blast pockets, and 4) two types of the upper and lower surfaces of the blast pockets to the reference tunnel model. An optimal solution by combining the analysis results of the tunnel entrance shape, the depth of the blast pockets, and the upper and lower parts of the blast pockets was provided in comparison to the reference tunnel model. The blast overpressures using the proposed tunnel shape have been reduced effectively.
Solid particle erosion wear characteristics of high Cr white iron hardfacing were investigated using the erosion wear test method according with the ASTM G76-95. Wear experiments, where the blast angle, blast distance and blast pressure were selected as test variables, were planned and analyzed by response surface method (RSM to evaluate the wear loss statistically and quantitatively. The measured wear losses well coincided with the calculated ones by the experimental equation. The wear loss of high Cr cast iron hardfacing was increased with blasting pressure, but affected in a complicated way by the blasting angle and distance. Erosion wear of high Cr cast iron hardfacing could be well predicted by RSM analysis of wear variables.
Explosions inside transportation tunnels might result in failure of tunnel structures. This study investigated the failure mechanisms of circular cast-iron tunnels in saturated soil subjected to medium internal blast loading. This issue is crucial to tunnel safety as many transportation tunnels run through saturated soils. At the same time blast loading on saturated soils may induce residual excess pore pressure, which may result in soil liquefaction. A series of numerical simulations were carried out using Finite Element program LS-DYNA. The effect of soil liquefaction was simulated by the Federal Highway soil model. It was found that the failure modes of tunnel lining were differed with different levels of blast loading. The damage and failure of the tunnel lining was progressive in nature and they occurred mainly during lining vibration when the main event of blast loading was over. Soil liquefaction may lead to more severe failure of tunnel lining. Soil deformation and soil liquefaction were determined by the coupling effects of lining damage, lining vibration, and blast loading. The damage of tunnel lining was a result of internal blast loading as well as dynamic interaction between tunnel lining and saturated soil, and stress concentration induced by a ventilation shaft connected to the tunnel might result in more severe lining damage.
The number of explosive attacks on civilian structures has recently increased. Protection of structure subjected to blast load remains quite sophisticated to predict. The use of the pyramid cover system (PCS) to strengthen sandwich structures against a blast terror has great interests from engineering experts in structural retrofitting. The sandwich steel structure performance under the impact of blast wave effect is highlighted. A 3-D numerical model is proposed to study the PCS layer to strengthen sandwich steel structures using finite element analysis (FEA). Hexagonal core sandwich (XCS) steel panels are used to study structural retrofitting using the PCS layer. Field blast test is conducted. The study presents a comparison between the results obtained by both the field blast test and the FEA to validate the accuracy of the 3-D finite element model. The effects are expressed in terms of displacement-time history of the sandwich steel panels and pressure-time history effect on the sandwich steel panels as the explosive wave propagates. The results obtained by the field blast test have a good agreement with those obtained by the numerical model. The PCS layer improves the sandwich steel panel performance under impact of detonating different TNT explosive charges.
Analysis of the internal state of the blast furnace is necessary to predict and to control the operating conditions. Especially, it is important to develop models of the blast furnace to predict the cohesive zone because shape of the cohesive zone influences overall operating conditions of blast furnace such as gas flow, chemical reactions and temperature. Because many previous blast furnace models have assumed cohesive zone to be fixed, it was not possible to evaluate the shape change of cohesive zone in relation with operating conditions such as PCR, blast condition, and production rate. In this study, an axi-symmetric 2-dimensional steady state model is proposed to simulate blast furnace processes. In this model, cohesive zone is determined by the solid temperature. Finite volume method is employed for numerical simulation. To find location of the cohesive zone, entire calculation procedure is iterated until converged. Through this approach, shape of the cohesive zone, velocity and temperature within the furnace are predicted from the model.
Characteristics of the flame propagation for normal and abnormal combustion in hydrogen premixture in a cylindrical constant-volume combustion chamber are studied numerically. A detailed hydrogen oxidation kinetic mechanism, mixture transport properties and a model describing spark ignition process are used. The calculated pressure-time history of the stable deflagration wave propagation agrees well with the experiment. The ignition of the premixture in the unburned gas, initiated by the hot spot, causes a transition from deflagration to detonation under some initial temperature and pressure. Under the initial conditions with high temperature and pressure, excessive ignition energy initiates a strong blast wave and a detonation wave that follows. The chemical reaction in the detonation wave is much more vigorous than that in the deflagration wave and the peak pressure in the detonation wave is much higher than the equilibrium value.
Design of stepwise foam claddings subjected to air-blast is performed based on random Voronoialgorithm. FE models are constructed using the random Voronoialgorithm, and numerical analysis is carried out to simulate deformation mode and energy absorption of the cladding by the ABAQUS/Explicit software. The FE model is validated by test result, and good agreement is achieved. The deformation patterns are presented to give an insight into the influences of distribution on deformation mechanisms. The energy absorbed by the stepwise foam cladding is examined, and the parameter effects, including layer number, gradient, and blast loading, are discussed. Results indicate that the energy absorption capacity increases with the number of layer, gradient degree, and blast pressure increasing.
