Rotor blades are important devices that affect the power performance, efficiency of energy conversion, and loading and dynamic stability of wind turbines. Therefore, considering the characteristics of a wind turbine system is important for achieving optimal blade design. When a design is complete, a design evaluation should be performed to verify the structural integrity of the proposed blade in accordance with international standards or guidelines. This paper presents a detailed exposition of the evaluation items and acceptance criteria required for the design certification of wind turbine blades. It also presents design evaluation results for a 2-MW blade (KR40.1b). Analyses of ultimate strength, buckling stability, and tip displacement were performed using FEM, and Miner's rule was applied to evaluate the fatigue life of the blade. The structural integrity of the KR40.1b blade was found to satisfy the design standards.

This study deals with structural analysis and testing under loading conditions calculated by computational fluid dynamics for a small composite blade that is utilized in a dual rotor wind turbine system. First, the aerodynamic forces were analyzed at the rated and cutout wind speed to identify the bending moment distribution along the blade length in previous research. Then, full-scale structural tests were conducted according to IEC 61400-2 to evaluate the structural integrity of the composite blade. These results were compared with finite element analysis to identify the accuracy of the structural analysis. Based on these results, it was revealed that the existing blade has a very high safety margin. Then, the layup of the composite blade was redesigned and analyzed using finite element analysis to achieve structural integrity and economic efficiency.
Numerical simulations on a single stage transonic compressor which is developed by Korea Aerospace Research Institute are carried out and their results are compared with experimental data for cross validations. Comparisons between experimental data and numerical simulation results show good agreements on a performance curve, static pressure and total pressure distributions. CFD results show that there is a clear interaction between tip leakage flow and normal shock in the rotor passage. Tip leakage flows are almost dissipated after the strong normal shock and it forms a strong recirculation near the blade tip. Also a large separation region grows on the suction surface just after the normal shock. As the pressure ratio and blade loading increase, the normal shock line moves upstream and it starts to deviate from the blade leading edge. Then the tip leakage flow does not overcome the strong adverse pressure gradient and flow blockage originated from the tip recirculation region. As a result, the tip leakage flow heads for the neighboring blade leading edge, which results in a compressor stall.

A simulation program is developed to analyse the performance of an axial flow turbine stage based on the meanline prediction method. The gradient projection method is utilized to minimize the aerodynamic losses under the specified constraints on such as flow coefficient, total pressure ratio, stage power and blade loading coefficient. After obtaining the optimum point for minimizing the stage loss, a sensitivity analysis is carried out ground the optimum point to find the effects of the design variables and the design constraints on the stage performance. The result of the senitivity analysis under a constant blade loading coefficient shows that the total loss is more sensitive to the mean diameter, the absolute flow angle at nozzle outlet, the relative flow angle at rotor outlet and the axial mean velocity compared to the chords and the pitches. Moreover, the design constraints on the degree of reaction at root and the blade length-to-diameter ratio are found to be most influencial on the maximization of the overall aerodynamic efficiency.

Asymmetric tip clearance in an axial compressor induces pressure and velocity redistributions along the circumferential direction in an axial compressor. This paper presents the mechanism of the flow redistribution due to the asymmetric tip clearance with a simple numerical modeling. The flow field of a rotor of an axial compressor is predicted when an asymmetric tip clearance occurs along the circumferential direction. The modeling results are supported by CFD results not only to validate the present modeling but also to investigate more detailed flow fields. Asymmetric tip clearance makes local flow area and resultant axial velocity vary along the circumferential direction. This flow redistribution 'seed' results in a different flow patterns according to the flow coefficient. Flow field redistribution patterns are largely dependent on the local tip clearance performance at low flow coefficients. However, the contribution of the main flow region becomes dominant while the tip clearance effect becomes weak as the flow coefficient increases. The flow field redistribution pattern becomes noticeably strong if a blockage effect is involved when the flow coefficient increases. The relative flow angle at the small clearance region decreases which result in a negative incidence angle at the high flow coefficient. It causes a recirculation region at the blade pressure surface which results in the flow blockage. It promotes the strength of the flow field redistribution at the rotor outlet. These flow pattern changes have an effect on the blade loading perturbations. The integration of blade loading perturbation from control volume analysis of the circumferential momentum leads to well-known Alford's force. Alford's force is always negative when the flow blockage effects are excluded. However when the flow blockage effect is incorporated into the modeling, main flow effects on the flow redistribution is also reflected on the Alford's force at the high flow coefficient. Alford's force steeply increases as the flow coefficient increases, because of the tip leakage suppression and strong flow redistribution. The predicted results are well agreed to CFD results by Kang and Kang(2006).

Noises from the large scale marine propeller are calculated numerically on non-cavitation condition. The hydrodynamic analysis are carried out by potential based panel method with time marching free wake approach. The distribution of hyrodynamic loads on the propeller surface and noise signals are obtained using the unsteady Bernoulli's equation and the Farasssat formula respectively. It turns out that the noise signal shows strong peak at the blade passage frequency. Noise signals and directivity patterns for both the thickness and the loading noise are compared with each other. The directivity pattern for the loading noise shows minor lobe at the backward side of the rotating disc plane.

An experimental study of turbine performance is conducted with various incidence angles on a rotating turbine rotor. 5 different incidence angles are applied from -17$^{\circ}$to 13$^{\circ}$with 7.5$^{\circ}$gaps. In order to precisely set up the incidence angles at the rotor inlet, 5 turbine discs are manufactured with the different fir tree section. Total-to-total efficiencies are obtained on the several off-design points with considering the exit total pressure, which is meas fred at 12 locations between the hub and casing using a pressure rake. The degree of reaction is 0.373 at the mean radius, and Reynolds number based on the rotor chord is 0.86$\times$10$^{5}$ at the turbine inlet on the design point experiment. The experiment on a single-stage turbine is conducted at the low-pressure and low-speed state, but it is sufficient to consider the blade loading effect due to the rotating apparatus even though the total pressure loss at the exit is increased proportionally to the turbine output power. The experimental results recommend 6$^{\circ}$as an optimum incidence angle on the turbine blade design. The total-to-total efficiency is steeply decreased when the incidence angle is over $\pm$9$^{\circ}$ from the optimum incidence angle. In the range of less than -10$^{\circ}$incidence angle, 7.5$^{\circ}$ reduction of incidence angle generates 15% decrease of total-to-total efficiency. This result is obtained on the same rotor blade by changing only the rotational speed to minimize the effect of profile and secondary flow loss in the passage. Experimental results show that the change rate of total-to-total efficiency according to the incidence angle change is unchanged although the turbine operates at the off-design condition.
The noise sources of a tip-jet driven rotor can be separated by rotor blade noise and jet noise. The rotor blade noise consists of thickness noise, loading noise, nonlinear quadrupole noise, and jet noise is divided into nozzle momentum noise and jet radiation noise. The flow analysis for the prediction of rotor blade noise is performed by CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) analysis, and the noise source of the rotor blade noise is identified by simultaneously applying the permeable and impermeable surface based FW-H (Ffowcs Williams-Hawkings) acoustic analogy. The nozzle momentum noise is obtained by permeable surface FW-H, and jet radiation noise is predicted by using empirical method for the fixed-wing jet. Both of jet noises use nozzle exit condition for noise analysis. The accuracy of the technique is verified based on the noise measurements of the tip-jet driven rotor, and the unique noise characteristics of the tip-jet driven rotor is confirmed by spectrum analysis.
The impact of spar-nacelle-blade coupling on edgewise dynamic responses of spar-type floating wind turbines (S-FOWT) is investigated in this paper. Currently, this coupling is not considered explicitly by researchers. First of all, a coupled model of edgewise vibration of the S-FOWT considering the aerodynamic properties of the blade, variable mass and stiffness per unit length, gravity, the interactions among the blades, nacelle, spar and mooring system, the hydrodynamic effects, the restoring moment and the buoyancy force is proposed. The aerodynamic loads are combined of a steady wind (including the wind shear) and turbulence. Each blade is modeled as a cantilever beam vibrating in its fundamental mode. The mooring cables are modeled using an extended quasi-static method. The hydrodynamic effects calculated by using Morison's equation and strip theory consist of added mass, fluid inertia and viscous drag forces. The random sea state is simulated by superimposing a number of linear regular waves. The model shows that the vibration of the blades, nacelle, tower, and spar are coupled in all degrees of freedom and in all inertial, dissipative and elastic components. An uncoupled model of the S-FOWT is then formulated in which the blades and the nacelle are not coupled with the spar vibration. A 5MW S-FOWT is analyzed by using the two proposed models. In the no-wave sea, the coupling is found to contribute to spar responses only. When the wave loading is considered, the coupling is significant for the responses of both the nacelle and the spar.

In this study, the progressive failure behavior of the composite fan blade dovetail element under tensile loading is numerically investigated through finite element(FE) simulation. The accuracy of prediction by FE simulation is verified through tensile testing. The dovetail element is one of the joints for coupling the fan blade with the disk in a turbofan engine. The dovetail element is usually made of a metal material such as titanium, but the application of composite material is being studied for weight reduction reasons. However, manufacturing defects such as drop-off ply and resin pocket inevitably occur in realizing complex shapes of the fan blade made by composite materials. To investigate the effect of these manufacturing defects on the composite fan blade dovetail element, we performed numerical simulation with FE model to compare the prediction of the FE model and the tensile test results. At this time, the cohesive zone model is used to simulate the delamination behavior. Finally, we found that FE simulation results agree with test results when considering thermal residual stress and through-thickness compression enhancement effect.
