  • This paper describes the procedure to predict steady and unsteady performances of a contrarotating propeller(CRP) by a mixed formulation of the boundary value problem(BVP) far the flow around a CRP. The blade BVP is treated by a classical vortex lattice method, whereas the hub BVP is solved by a potential-based panel method. Blades and trailing wakes are represented by a vortex and/or source lattice system, and hubs are represented by normal dipole and source distributions. Both forward and aft propellers are solved simultaneously, thus treating the interaction effect without iteration. The unsteady performance is computed directly in time domain. The new numerical procedure requires a large amount of storage and computing time, which is however no longer a limit in a modern computer system. Sample computations show that the steady performance compares very well with the experiments. The predicted unsteady behavior shows that the dominant harmonics of the total forces are multiples of not only the number of blades of the forward and aft propellers but also the product of both blade numbers. The magnitude of the latter harmonics, present also in uniform oncoming flow, may reach abort 50% of the mean torque for the aft propeller, which in turn may cause a serious vibration problem in the complicated contrarotating shafting system.

  • A stereoscopic PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry) technique was employed to measure the 3 dimensional flow structure of turbulent wake behind a marine propeller with 5 blades. The out-of-plane velocity component was determined using two CCD cameras with the angular displacement configuration. Four hundred instantaneous velocity fields were measured for each of four different blade phases and ensemble averaged to investigate the spatial evolution of the propeller wake in the near-wake region from the trailing edge to one propeller diameter(D) downstream. The phase-averaged velocity fields show the potential wake and the viscous wake developed along the blade surfaces. Tip vortices were generated periodically and the slipstream contraction occurs in the near-wake region. The out-of-plane velocity component and strain rate have large values at the locations of tip and trailing vortices. As the flow goes downstream, the turbulence intensity, the strength of tip vortices and the magnitude of out-of-plane velocity component at trailing vortices are decreased due to viscous dissipation, turbulence diffusion and blade-to-blade interaction.

  • A high-order accurate Euler flow solver based on a discontinuous Galerkin method has been developed for the numerical simulation of unsteady flows on unstructured meshes. A multi-level solution-adaptive mesh refinement/coarsening technique was adopted to enhance the resolution of numerical solutions efficiently by increasing mesh density in the high-gradient region. An acoustic wave scattering problem was investigated to assess the accuracy of the present discontinuous Galerkin solver, and a supersonic flow in a wind tunnel with a forward facing step was simulated by using the adaptive mesh refinement technique. It was shown that the present discontinuous Galerkin flow solver can capture unsteady flows including the propagation and scattering of the acoustic waves as well as the strong shock waves.

  • Numerical analysis of three-dimensional viscous flow-fields in the turbine rotor passages was carried out to investigate flow physics including the interaction between secondary vortices, tip leakage vortex, and the rotor wake. The blade tip geometry was accurately modeled adopting the embedded H grid system. An explicit four-stage Runge-Kutta scheme was used for the time integration of both the mean flow and turbulence equations. The computational results for the entire turbine rotor flows, particularly the tip clearance flow and the secondary flows, were interpreted and compared with the experimental data from the Penn State turbine stage. The predictions for major features of the flow field have been found to be in good agreement with the experimental data.

  • Centrifugal fans are widely used and the noise generated by these machines causes one of the most serious problems. In general, the centrifugal fan noise is often dominated by tones at BPF(blade passage frequency) and its higher harmonics. This is a consequence of the strong interaction between the flow discharged from the impeller and the cutoff in the casing. However, only a few researches have been carried out on predicting the noise because of the difficulty in obtaining detailed Information about the flow field and casing effects on noise radiation. The objective of this study is to develop a prediction method for the unsteady flow field and the acoustic pressure field of a centrifugal fan, and to calculate the effects of small vanes that are attached in original impeller - Splitter impeller. We assume that the impeller rotates with a constant angular velocity and the flow field around the impeller is incompressible and inviscid. So, a discrete vortex method (DVM) is used to model the centrifugal fan and to calculate the flow field. The force of each element on the blade is calculated by the unsteady Bernoulli equation. Lowson's method is used to predict the acoustic source. The splitter impeller changes the acoustic characteristics as well as performance. Two-splitter type impeller and splitter impeller which splitter locates in jet region are good for acoustic characteristics.

  • There have been many academic researches on the aerodynamic design of wind turbine based on blade element method (BEM) and momentum theory (MT, or actuating disk theory). However, in the real world, the turbine blade design requires many additional constraints more than theoretical analysis. The standard procedure is studied in the present paper to design new blades for the wind turbine system ranged from the small size from 1 to 10 kW. From the experience of full design of a 10 kW blade, the authors tried to set up a standard procedure for the aerodynamic design based on IEC 61400-2. Wind-turbine scale, rotating speed, and geometrical chord/twist distribution at the segmented span positions are calculated with a suitable BEM/MT code, and the geometrical shape of tip and root should be modified after considering various parameters: wing-tip vortex, aerodynamic noise, turbine efficiency, structural safety, convenience of fabrication, and even economic factor likes price, etc. The evaluated data is passed to the next procedure of structural design, but some of them should still be corresponded with each other: the fluid-structure interaction is one of those problems not yet solved, for example. Consequently, the design procedure of small wind-turbine blades is set up for the mass production of commercial products in this research.

  • The purpose of the present research is to suppress cavitation instabilities by using a circumferential groove. The circumferential groove was designed based on CFD so that the tip leakage vortex is trapped by the groove and does not interact with the next blade. Experimental results show that the groove can suppress rotating cavitation, asymmetric cavitation and cavitation surge. However, weak instabilities with higher frequency could not be suppressed by the groove. From the analysis of pressure pattern similar to that for rotor-stator interaction, it was found that the higher frequency components are caused by the interaction of backflow vortices with the inducer blades.
