  • The computational flow analysis using LES technique was carried out to investigate the flow characteristics of a RAC chassis consisting of a rear-guider, a stabilizer and a cross-flow fan. The commercial SC/Tetra software was used in this analysis. In view of the results so far achieved, the distribution trends of static pressure and velocity vector of central region except the edges of a CFFan are similar regardless of the number of revolution, and an eccentric vortex exists around the bottom blade of a CFFan. Also, a reverse flow is found in the region between stabilizer and CFFan. Moreover, near the edges of a CFFan, an eccentric vortex is separated to two vortexes. Also these vortexes increase the velocity near a rear-guider, and guide the flow near a rear-guider into stabilizer inlet. Therefore, the reverse flow region is formed in the bottom of a CFFan.

  • Axial fans are very useful cooling devices being widely used in many electric and industrial machinery. However those are often accompanying annoying noise. Many efforts have been devoted in order to reduce the fan noise. In this study, the procedure was devided into two major parts in considering effects of design parameters of axial fan concerned with noise ; the fan theory and the Fukano's fan noise study. By using the fan theory we defined stagger angle, camber angle, blade inlet and outlet angle for studying low noise fan. Then the effects of such angles on the flow rate and static pressure were investigated. By using the Fukano's fan noise theory, the relations of the chord length, the rotational speed and the number of blades vs. fan noise are investigated.

  • A Propeller as the propulsion system of a target drone has been designed. The vortex theory has been applied for the propeller design method. A compressible effect has been removed and the Reynolds Number assumed to be constant. Design variables have been the chord length and the geometric angle of the blade. The aim of this optimum design has been an efficiency maximization. A performance of the designed propeller has been analyzed.

  • To examine the influence of unsteady wake on the flow and heat transfer characteristics, an experiment has been conducted in a four-vane linear cascade. Flow and heat transfer measurements are made for the inlet Reynolds number of 66000(based on chord length and free-stream velocity). Turbulent intensity and stress were measured using hot wire anemometer, and to measure the convective heat transfer coefficients on the blade surfaces liquid crystal/gold film Intrex technique was used. The disturbance by the unsteady wake is characterized by the unresolved unsteadiness. The unsteady wake enhances the turbulent motion of flow in the cascade passage. It also promotes the boundary layer development and transition. The results show that heat transfer coefficients on the suction surface increase with increasing unresolved unsteadiness.

  • Counter Rotating Turbine (CRT) is an axial turbine with a nozzle followed by a rotor and another rotor that rotates in the opposite direction of the first one. Axial spacing between blade rows plays major role in its performance. Present work involves computationally studying the performance and flow field of CRT with axial spacing of 10, 30 and 70% for different mass flow rates. The turbine components are modeled for all the three spacing. Velocity, pressure, entropy and Mach number distributions across turbine stage are analyzed. Effect of spacing on losses and performance in case of stage, Rotor1 and Rotor2 are elaborated. Results confirm that an optimum axial spacing between turbine components can be obtained for the improved performance of CRT.

  • Carbon-epoxy prepreg has been introduced in the forming of the upper and lower swash plates that control the pitch of rotor blade of unmanned helicopter because of its lightweight. Taguchi experimental method has been used by introducing the variables such as arrangement angle, laminated number and forming temperature, in order to obtain the proper forming method by using prepreg satisfying the required strength of the swash plate. In the evaluation of structural safety for the swash plates, three kinds of models are considered by using FE-analysis. In comparison of the hot forged products with Al6061-T6 and the formed products with prepreg, it was found that ultimate tensile strength of the products with prepreg is three times higher than that of the Al6061-T6, and the weight reduction of 68.5g can be achieved by using prepreg swash plates.

  • Relatively high rotating speed propulsion shafting system of the large Ro-Ro Ferry has a greate risk of the resonance of the many wide local panels as well as the high frequency global vibratory modes. Therefore, from the initial design stage, it is necessary to control the vibration characteristics of the wide panels with detail so as not to be resonant with the blade number order excitation due to the propellers in the normal operating speed range. The procedure of the vibration analysis and the structural redesign for prevention of vibration is introduced.

  • This paper presents a new multifunctional active guidewire system for medical applications that uses a magnetic microrobot. The study demonstrated that the proposed microrobot system could swim and be controlled under Low-Reynolds-number (Re) environments in blood vessel models. The prototype of the robotic guidewire, which is driven within a three-axis Helmholtz coil system, consists of a guide-wire, spiral blade, drilling tip, and permanent magnet. The spiral-type microrobot showed stable active locomotion between 3 kA/m and 9.1 kA/m under driving frequency up to 70 Hz in a silicone oil (of viscosity 1000 cst). The microrobot produced a maximum moving velocity of $8.08{\times}10^{-3}m/s$ at 70 Hz and 9.1 kA/m. In particular, the robotic guidewire produced 3D locomotion with drilling in the three-axis Helmholtz coil system. We verified active locomotion, towing of guidewire, steering, and drilling of the proposed robotic guidewire system through experimental analyses.

  • Hydraulic performance and flow resistance tests were performed to confirm the main parameters of the hydraulic instrumentation that can affect the pump performance of the reactor coolant pump. The flow resistance test offers important experimental data, which are necessary to predict the behavior of the primary coolant when the circulation of the reactor coolant pump is stopped. Moreover, the shape of the hydraulic section of the pump, which was considered in the test, was prepared to compare the mixed-flow- and axial-flow-type models, the difference in the number of blades of the impeller and diffuser, the difference in the shape of the impeller blade and its thickness, and the effect of coating at the suction bell. Additionally, five models of the hydraulic part were manufactured for the experiments. In this study, the differences in performance owing to the design factors were confirmed through the experimental results.
