Numerical investigations are presented, which show that a back-flow flap can improve the dynamic stall characteristics of oscillating airfoils. The flap was able to weaken the stall vortex and therefore to reduce the peak in the pitching moment. This paper gives a brief insight into the method of function of a back-flow flap. Initial wind tunnel experiments were performed to define the structural requirements for a detailed experimental wind tunnel characterization. A structural integration concept and two different actuation mechanisms of a back-flow flap for a helicopter rotor blade are presented. First a piezoelectric actuation system was investigated, but the analytical model to estimate the performance showed that the displacement generated is too low to enable reliable operation. The seond actuation mechanism is based on magnetic forces to generate an impulse that initiates the opening of the flap. A concept based on two permanent magnets is further detailed and characterized, and this mechanism is shown to generate sufficient impulse for reliable operation in the wind tunnel.

When Ti-6Al-4V is used in long steam turbine blades, the main issues are how to improve the fatigue strength as a problem of internal quality and how to forge the thinnest possible blades as problem of dimensional precision. To assure an excellent fatigue strength, it is important to make the two phase fine and equiaxial structure by providing enough plastic deformation in the two phase$(\alpha\;phase/\beta\;phase)$ temperature region. Accordingly, it needs to predict that forging temperature, preform design and forging velocity in forging process. To achieve this end, the two steps forging process was suggested to forge the thin and twisted blades with a precision hammer considering die forces and metal flow. Two steps forging process consists of the flattening forging process and finishing forging process. Process in forging of a 1016mm long steam turbine blade is designed by the finite element method. This study attempts to derive systematic design procedures for process design in the forging. Forging parameters was analyzed in two-dimensional plane-strain simulation and two steps forging process carried out in three-dimensional simulation. Consequently, optimal forging process parameters of long steam turbine blades in Ti-6Al-4V with a high dimensional precision are selected in the hammer die forging.

A strength problem of propeller blades for large container ships at astern condition has been occasionally reported due to the application of a highly skewed propeller which can reduce the hull surface fluctuation forces. A finite element analysis code for propeller blade was developed and utilized since 1985. Recently, however, further fine mesh modeling for finite element analysis is required to yield higher accuracy in the analysis. The present study shows an application of FE analysis code to the highly skewed propeller for large container ships. Results of FE analysis show that the number of FE mesh affects largely on strength, and also the calculated strength with fine mesh gives good agreements to those of other FEM codes. A method to enlarge strength near the trailing edge was introduced considering the strength criterion on the blade.

Providing high starting torque and efficiency simultaneously is a significant challenge for vertical axis wind turbines (VAWTs). In this paper, a new approach is studied in order to modify VAWTs performance and cogging torque. In this approach, J-shaped profiles are exploited in the structure of blades by means of eliminating the pressure side of airfoil from the maximum thickness toward the trailing edge. This new profile is a new type of VAWT airfoil using the lift and drag forces, thereby yielding a better performance at low TSRs. To simulate the fluid flow of the VAWT along with J-shaped profiles originated from NACA0018 and NACA0030, a two-dimensional computational analysis is conducted. The Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations are closed using the two-equation Shear Stress Transport (SST) turbulence model. The main objective of the study is to investigate the effects of J-shaped straight blade thickness on the performance characteristics of VAWT. The results obtained indicate that opting for the higher thickness in J-shaped profiles for the blade sections leads the performance and cogging torque of VAWT to enhance dramatically.

A wind tunnel test of 29.7% scaled model of NASA Common Research Model was performed in small low speed wind tunnel. The wind tunnel model was fabricated in Aluminium in consultation with NASA Langley Research Center and AIAA Drag Prediction Workshop committee members. The static aerodynamic forces and moments were measured at a relatively low Reynolds number of 0.3 × 106 due to tunnel capability limitations. Pitching moment of three types of model support(Fin sting, Blade sting and Belly sting) were compared. The pitching moment for corrected Belly sting and Fin sting were similar. The result of pitching moment for Blade sting was very small.

This work conducts a validation study for loads analysis of the UH-60A slowed rotor at high advance ratios. The nonlinear flexible multibody dynamics analysis code, DYMORE II, is used with a freewake model for the rotorcraft comprehensive analysis. Wind tunnel test data of airloads and structural loads of a full-scale UH-60A slowed rotor are used for this validation study. This analysis predicts well the thrust reversal phenomenon at the advance ratio of 1.0. The section airloads such as normal forces and pitching moments and the oscillatory blade structural moments in this analysis are compared well or moderately with the measured data, although the higher harmonics components of blade torsion moments are not captured well. This validation study assesses the prediction accuracy and investigates the unique aeromechanics characteristics of a slowed rotor at high advance ratio.
This paper proposes a novel airfoil named "KA2" for the blade of the wind turbine systems. Dynamic loads characteristics are analyzed and compared using aerodynamic data of ten airfoils including the proposed airfoil. The blade is divided into the sixteen elements in the longitudinal direction of the blade for applying the Blade Element Method Theory (BEMT) method, and in each element, torque, thrust, and pitching moment are calculated using turbulent time varying wind speed and aerodynamic data of each wing. Additionally, each force and torque is accumulated in the whole region of the blade for the estimation of representative values. The magnitude of such forces is comparatively analyzed for different airfoils. The angle of attack is constant below the rated wind speed due to the fact that the tip speed ratio is kept at the constant value, and it increases in the region of over rated wind speed as the tip speed ratio decreasing with constant rated rpm and increasing wind speed. Such increase in the angle of attack causes the changes of the force acting on the airfoil with different characteristics of lift and drag in the stall region of each different airfoil. Even though the mean wind speed is in the rated speed in a given time, because of the turbulence, it has either the over rated or under rated speed most of the time. Furthermore, the dynamic properties of each force are analyzed in this rated wind speed in order to objectively understand the dynamic properties of the blades which are designed based on the different airfoils. These dynamic properties are also compared by the standard deviation of time varying characteristics. Moreover, the output characteristics of the wind turbine are investigated with different airfoils and wind speeds. Based on these investigations, it was revealed that the proposed airfoil (KA2) is well applicable to the blade with passive pitch control system.

An analytical procedure on the base of the substructure synthesis and assumed modes method is developed to investigate the flexibility effect of bladed disk assembly on vibrational modes of flexible rotor system. In modeling the system, Coriolis forces, gyroscopic moments, and centrifugal stiffening effects are taken into account. The coupled vibrations between the shaft and bladed disk are then extensively investigated through the numerical simulation of simplified models, with varying the shaft rotational speed and the pretwist and stagger angles of the blade. It is found that the Coriolis and inertia forces and the inertia torque, which are induced by the one nodal diameter modes of the bladed disk and vary depending upon the stagger and pretwist angles, lead to the coupled motions of the shaft and the bladed disk.

A three node triangular element with drilling rotations incorporating Improved Layerwise Zig-zag Theory(HZZT) is developed to analyze the vibration of spinning pretwisted composite blades with embedded damping layer. Matching conditions at the interfaces between the damping material and the border material are enforced by setting the shear forces matched and different shear strains along the interfaces. The natural frequencies and modal loss factors of cantilevered pretwisted composite blade with damping core are calculated with the present triangular element enforcing the matching conditions and compared to experimental results and MSC/NASTRAN results using a layered combination of plate and solid elements.
