Growth, Carbon and Nitrogen Status of Container Grown Black Pine (Pinus thunbergii) Seedlings at Various Levels of Foliar Fertilization

  • The growth, carbon and nitrogen status of container grown black pine (Pinus thunbergii) seedlings were examined at various levels of foliar fertilization (control, 0.1%, 0.2%, 0.3%). Root collar diameter, height and dry weight of black pine seedlings increased significantly with increasing levels of foliar fertilization (P<0.05). Carbon concentration in needle of black pine seedlings was significantly higher in the foliar fertilization than in the control treatments (P<0.05), while other seedling components such as stem and roots were not significantly different (P>0.05) between the foliar fertilization and the control treatments. Nitrogen concentration and content were significantly greater in the foliar fertilization than in the control treatments (P<0.05). Shoot/root ratio of black pine seedlings (needle+stem dry weight/root dry weight) was greater in the foliar fertilization (2.40-2.89) than in the control treatments (1.87). However, nitrogen use efficiency was significantly lower (P<0.05) in the foliar fertilization (28-46) than in the control (111) treatments. The results indicate that morphological characteristics and nutritional status on container grown black pine seedlings were enhanced by various levels of foliar fertilization.

  • 제주도 산지림 및 방풍림 삼나무 목재의 조직 특성, 생재함수율, 무기 함유물 농도 및 흑심재 발생률 조사를 통해 얻어진 결과는 다음과 같았다. 1. 흑심재의 발생률은 산지림의 나무에 비해 방풍림의 것에서 훨씬 더 높게 나타났다. 2. 생재함수율은 심재의 재색이 적갈색에서 흑색으로 변함에 따라 높아지는 것으로 드러났다. 3. 흑심재의 방사조직 내에 존재하는 무기 함유물인 $K_2O$와 CaO는 흑심재의 주요 형성 원인 가운데 하나인 것으로 여겨졌다. 4. 목재의 비중 및 기계적 성질은 제주도의 삼나무가 한반도 남부 지역의 삼나무에 비해 비교적 낮게 나타났지만 제주도 내의 방풍림과 산지림 나무 사이에서는 큰 차이를 보이지 않았다.

우리나라에서 솔껍질깍지벌레의 분포확산 (The Spread of Black Pine Bast Scale, Matsucoccus thunbergianae (Hemiptera: Margarodidae) in Korea)

  • 솔껍질깍지벌레는 우리나라 곰솔림의 주요한 해충의 하나이다. 본 연구는 우리나라에서 솔껍질깍지벌레의 분포를 알아보기 위하여 7개도 3개 광역시, 91개 시군구, 686 읍면동의 해송림에서 2010년 밀도를 조사하였다. 5개도 2개 광역시에서 솔껍질깍지벌레가 서식하고 있었는데 시군구별로는 조사대상의 64.8%인 59개 시군구에서 서식이 확인되었다. 솔껍질깍지벌레의 분포는 남해안 전역과 동해안의 포항, 서해안의 충남 보령지역까지 분포하였다. 충북과 대전광역시 및 제주도에서는 솔껍질깍지벌레의 분포가 확인되지 않았다. 부산지역은 16곳의 모든 구에서 솔껍질깍지벌레가 분포하였고, 시군 단위에서는 전남 해남군의 솔껍질깍지벌레 평균밀도가 1.713마리/0.785 $cm^2$로 가장 높았으며 읍면동 단위에서는 해남군 송지면이 6.36마리/0.785 $cm^2$로 가장 높았다. 곰솔 가지 내의 솔껍질깍지벌레 밀도와 솔껍질깍지벌레가 서식하고 있는 빈도와는 높은 상관관계가 있었다(상관계수=0.89).

Visible injury and growth inhibition of black pine in relation to oxidative stress in industrial areas

  • The objective of our study was to investigate the major reasons for the different growth and visible injury on the needles of black pine growing in Ulsan and Yeocheon industrial complex areas, South Korea. After 12 years of growth, we collected climatic and air pollutant data, and analyzed soil properties and the physiological characteristics of black pine needles. Annual and minimum temperatures in Ulsan were higher than those in Yeocheon from 1996 to 2008. Ozone ($O_3$) was the pollutant in greatest concentration in Yeocheon, and whereas the $SO_2$ concentration in most areas decreased gradually during the whole period of growth, $SO_2$ concentration in Yeocheon has increased continuously since 1999, where it was the highest out of four areas since 2005. Total nitrogen and cation exchange capacity in Yeocheon soil were significantly lower than those of Ulsan. The average growth of black pine in Yeocheon was significantly smaller than that in Ulsan, and the growth of damaged trees represented a significant difference between the two sites. Photosynthetic pigment and malondialdehyde content and antioxidative enzyme activity in the current needles of black pine in Yeocheon were not significantly different between damaged and healthy trees, but in 1-year-old needles, there were significant differences between damaged and healthy trees. In conclusion, needle damage in Yeocheon black pine can be considered the result of long-term exposure to oxidative stress by such as $O_3$ or $SO_2$, rather than a difference in climatic condition or soil properties, and the additional expense of photosynthate needed to overcome damage or alleviate oxidative stress may cause growth retardation.

솔잎흑파리 피해림의 소나무 생장에 관하여 (On the Growth of Pine Tree in the Damaged Forest by the Needle Gall Midge)

  • The growth of red and black pines in Muan, Seochen, Gapyeong and Kochang areas was compared by means of the growth of annual ring width and stem analysis to study the process of damages caused by pine needle gall midge. Red pine forest of Seocheon area began to suffer by pine needle gall midge from 1961 and the damage was to becoming severe from 1967. The damage became so intense tha tmany forests are withering to death from spring of 1975. Black pine forest also began to suffer from 1973. Red pine forest of Muan area was supposed to be suffered from 1973. Red pine forest of Kochang area suffered by pine needle gall midge from 1967. It seems that the damage became severe from 1973 and that black pine forest was also badly damaged from that time. Red pine forest of the control plot, Gapyeong area, began to suffer from 1967 and it also became intense from 1973. Although the areas of Seocheon, Muan, Kochang, and Gapyeong are different from each other in terms of locality and the infitration period of pine needle gall equally from 1967 due to mass development of population or other factors and the damage became more intense from 1973. Black pine forest was also badly damaged from that time. Black pine seems to be stronger in insect resistant than red pine. This can be justified by the fact that it began to suffer belatedly in each area and the degree of damage is moderate. The damage of Seocheon area is the severest following Kochang. Muan area is relatively moderate but the forest becoming decrease in growth.

Persistence and Change in the Black Forest Ethnic Dress Tradition

  • The ethnic dress of Germany's Black Forest, called Tracht, dates back to the 16th century. Although most people living within the Black Forest do not presently wear Trachten, some persistence in this tradition exists. This study explored the factors that have supported the persistence of the Trachten tradition, specifically related to the wearing and crafting of Trachten by women, in a contemporary society. A qualitative, ethnographic approach was adopted. Data were collected via observations and interviews in the Black Forest. Thematic analyses revealed that the maintenance of the Trachten tradition was linked to varied factors that revolved around the overarching themes of both persistence and change. Interpretations were supported by theory proposing that ethnic dress is not static, but rather, changes across space and time in ways that enable its persistence. The persistence of the Trachten tradition was linked to formalized practice, meaningful identities, and desires to preserve and promote local culture. Additionally, the persistence of the Trachten tradition was fostered by change in the tradition, including the conceptualization of Trachten as a "lived practice" and the negotiation of Trachten authenticity.

Ericaceous식물의 allelopathy와 경쟁력에 의한 침엽수 갱신 저해 (Competitive Ability and Allelopathy of Ericaceous Plants as Potential Causes of Conifer Regeneration Failures)

  • 온대 삼림지대에서 산화 적지나 개벌 적지에 왕성하게 번성하는 것이 ericaceous속이다. ericaceous속의 식물들은 성장이 빨라서 다른 종과의 경쟁에서 유리하고 또한 allelopathy 효과 때문에 침엽수 갱신에 영향을 미친다. Kalmia가 번성하는 지역에서는 삼림 갱신이 잘 되지 않거나 조림한 침엽수의 생장이 저조하였다. 이러한 생상 저해 현상은 서유럽의 Calluna - Sitca spruce - Scots pine 생태계와 미국의 북서 태평양 지역의 Gaultheria - cedar/hemlock 생태계에서도 나타나고 있다. 삼림이 파괴된 다음에 Kalmia - black spruce 생태계의 다양한 변화는 침엽수 생장을 저해하거나 갱신을 방해하는 원인으로 생각되어지고 있다. 양분경쟁에 대한 논쟁의 여지는 있으나 Kalmia는 black spruce 생장을 억제하는 주원인으로 작용한다. 여러 곳의 야외, 실내 및 온실에서 한 실험 결과는 이러한 결론을 뒷받침해 주고 있다. 본 논문에서는 Kalmia 잎으로부터 8가지의 폐놀물질을 분리동정해 냈으며 이들 중 4가지는 black spruce에 고도의 독성을 나타냈다. Kalmia 우점지역에서 allelopathic 영향을 적게 하므로써 black spruce의 갱신을 증진시키기 위한 여러 가지 방법에 대한 고찰을 하였다.

솔껍질깍지벌레(Matsucoccus thunbergianae)의 확산(擴散) 유형(類型) (Dispersal Pattern of the Black Pine Bast Scale, Matsucoccus thunbergianae (Homoptera : Margarodidae), in Korea)

  • 우리나라 해안지역에 널리 분포하고 있는 해송에 극심한 피해를 주고 있는 솔껍질깍지벌레는 1963년 전남 고흥에서 최초로 발생된 것으로 추정되며, 그 후 계속 확산되어 현재 서해안과 남해안 지역으로 분포가 확대되었다. 본 연구는 1983년부터 1999년까지 임업연구원에서 수행한 발생선단지 조사 자료를 토대로 확산방향을 최초 발생지로부터 서해안쪽으로의 북향, 내륙지역으로의 동북향, 남해안쪽으로의 동향 등 3방향으로 구분하여 확산 유형을 분석하였다. 내륙으로의 확산은 해송의 밀도가 높은 곳에서는 연평균 약 4.3km의 확산속도를 보였지만 1990년대 초반부터 해송의 밀도가 낮아지는 곳에서는 속도가 매우 느려졌다. 해송의 밀도가 높은 서해안쪽 북향과 남해안쪽 동향은 확산속도가 각각 연평균 5.9, 3.3km로서 북향으로의 확산속도가 가장 높았다.

Black Locust (Robinia pseudoacacia L.) in Bulgaria

  • Robinia pseudoacacia is one of most widely cultivated exotic species in Bulgaria. The total area of black locust plantations amounts to 2.9% of the total forest area of the country. 15.34% of the plantations are of management afforestations category, where the priority is given to timber production. They have been created on rich and moisture soils, which are the most appropriate for the species in order to achieve its biological potentials of high productivity. The rest of the available plantations in the country are planted on poorer and drier soils up to 600~800 m altitude. The high adaptive ability of the species to unsuitable environmental conditions as well as the high sprout potential was used for their creation. These stands are mainly done with the aim to protect and ameliorate damaged environments and production of small-size timber and fire woods. They are cultivated until 15-20 years and are revived by sprouts. Therefore the management goals searched, 45.69% of those forests are low productive and 38.97% with average productiveness. The present report deals with growth and productivity capacity of black locust plantations; production of sowing materials; production of reproductive and vegetative saplings for afforestation; the technological aspects of afforestation works; the management and use of black locust plantations as well as some more important diseases and pests affecting the species. The report is entirely based on Bulgarian scientific research works and experience with the Robinia preudoacacia. Recommendations for optimizing the use of species are given.

아까시나무(Robinia pseudoacacia L.)조림지와 인접 임분의 토양특성 변화 (Changes of Soil Properties in Black Locust(Robinia pseudoacacia L.) Stand and Adjacent Stand)

  • 아까시나무 조림이 토양에 미치는 영향을 파악하기 위하여 아까시나무 조림지와 인접하고 있는 다른 임분의 토양 이화학적 성질을 비교, 분석하여 토양특성의 변화에 대해 조사하였다. 아까시나무 조림지와 인접 임분의 토성은 대부분 사양토와 양질 사토로 나타났다. 토양 pH, 유효인산의 함량, 탄소와 전질소의 함량이 아까시나무 조림지와 인접 임분사이에 차이가 있음을 확인할수 있었다. 아까시나무 조림지에서 토양 pH와 탄소의 함량은 참나무류림보다는 낮지만, 소나무류림보다는 높았으며, 유효인산과 질소의 함량은 아까시나무 조림지가 인접 임분보다 높게 나타났다. 각 임분들 사이에서는 토양 pH가 높은 통계적인 유의성을 보였으며, 탄소와 전질소함량에서도 통계적인 유의성이 있었다. 또한 토양 pH, 탄질률, CEC, 전질소함량 순으로 높은 상관관계를 보였다. 아까시나무가 인접하고 있는 참나무류림과 소나무류림에 침입하는 정도를 다르게 할 수 있다고 추론할 수 있었다.
