  • In this paper, we propose an effective memory reduction algorithm to reduce the amount of reference frame buffer and memory bandwidth in video encoder and decoder. In general video codecs, decoded previous frames should be stored and referred to reduce temporal redundancy. Recently, reference frames are recompressed for memory efficiency and bandwidth reduction between a main processor and external memory. However, these algorithms could hurt coding efficiency. Several algorithms have been proposed to reduce the amount of reference memory with minimum quality degradation. They still suffer from quality degradation with fixed-bit allocation. In this paper, we propose an adaptive block-based min-max quantization that considers local characteristics of image. In the proposed algorithm, basic process unit is $8{\times}8$ for memory alignment and apply an adaptive quantization to each $4{\times}4$ block for minimizing quality degradation. We found that the proposed algorithm could improve approximately 37.5% in coding efficiency, compared with an existing memory reduction algorithm, at the same memory reduction rate.

  • The transmission of prerecorded and compressed video data without degradation of picture quality requires video servers to cope with large fluctuations in bandwidth requirement. Bandwidth smoothing techniques can reduce the burst of a variable-bit rate stream by prefetching data at a series of fixed rates and simplifying the allocation of resources in the video servers and the network. In this paper, the proposed smoothing algorithm results in the optimal transmission plans for (1) the smallest bandwidth requirements, (2) the minimum number of changes in transmission rate, and (3) the minimum amount of the server process overhead. The advantages of the proposed smoothing algorithm have been verified through the comparison with the existing smoothing algorithms in diverse environments.

  • In this paper, we propose the data stream allocation algorithms for maximizing sum capacity of downlink multiuser MIMO (Multiple-input Multiple-output) systems with BD (Block Diagonalization). The conventional BD precoding algorithms maximize the capacity by controlling power against channel gain of each user. In multiuser MIMO systems, however, the number of data streams for each user can be used to as another control parameter, which determines the capacity. This paper proposes the data stream allocation algorithm of BD for increasing capacity in multiuser MIMO systems. The proposed algorithm allocates unequal bit stream to each user based on channel matrix of each user for maximizing sum capacity. It is proved that proposed algorithm can achieve the significantly improved sum capacity by computer simulation.

  • This paper studies energy-efficiency (EE) power allocation for cognitive radio MIMO-OFDM systems. Our aim is to minimize energy efficiency, measured by "Joule per bit" metric, while maintaining the minimal rate requirement of a secondary user under a total power constraint and mutual interference power constraints. However, since the formulated EE problem in this paper is non-convex, it is difficult to solve directly in general. To make it solvable, firstly we transform the original problem into an equivalent convex optimization problem via fractional programming. Then, the equivalent convex optimization problem is solved by a sequential quadratic programming algorithm. Finally, a new iterative energy-efficiency power allocation algorithm is presented. Numerical results show that the proposed method can obtain better EE performance than the maximizing capacity algorithm.

  • Wireless relay attracts great attention as a core technology of next generation wireless communication systems since it enables reliable communications and extends cell coverage by supporting shadowed users. In this paper, we Propose transmit power and subcarrier allocation scheme for downlink OFDM systems with multiple decode and forward (DF) relays to increase data rate with fixed bit error rate (BER) and sum power constraint. In simulation results, average data rate based on the proposed schemes are evaluated and compared to that of the other schemes. It is also shown that the performance loss of the proposed scheme is negligible compared to the optimal scheme, while its computational complexity is reduced considerably.

  • In recent years, OFDMA(orthogonal frequency division multiple access) and SC-FDMA(Single Carrier Frequency Division Multiple Access) have been widely studied for the uplink of a mobile communication system. In this paper, PAPR(Peak-to-Average Power Ratio) and BER(Bit Error Rate) performance of the OFDMA and SC-FDMA systems are studied in relation to the uplink of a mobile communication system. Three kinds of sub-carrier allocation methods in the OFDMA system and 2 kinds of sub-carrier allocation methods in SC-FDMA system are suggested to compare and improve system performance. Simulation results show that in the OFDMA system, the first sub-band allocation method has better PAPR reduction performance than the other methods. In the SC-FDMA system, the distributed allocation method offers similar P APR, compared with the sub-band allocation method. P APR can be further reduced by adding a spectrum shaping filter with an appropriate roll of factor. Furthermore, it is found that on average, SC-FDMA can reduce the PAPR by more than 5 dB compared to OFDMA, when the total sub-carrier number is 1,024 and the sub-carrier number allocated to each user changes trom 8 to 512. Because of the frequency diversity and low PAPR characteristics, SC-FDMA system of the distributed sub-carrier allocation method can achieve better BER performance than the OFDMA system.

  • We propose the Optimum Power Allocation (OPA) scheme for Distributed Antenna Systems(DAS) in the time-varying Rayleigh fading channel. Recently, the OPA schemes which uses the Channel State Information (CSI) including a small scale (fast) fading have been proposed. However, the channel is changing vary fast over time due to small scale fading, therefore Bit Error Rate (BER) increases. Because of this reason, we derive the OPA for minimizing BER in DAS, which only uses a large scale fading to CSI and excepts a small scale fading. The simulation results show that the proposed OPA achieves better BER performance than conventional OPA considering a small scale fading in time-varying Rayleigh fading channel, and also has similar performance in Rayleigh flat-fading environment. The BER performance of proposed OPA which derived in Rayleigh fading channel is similar to minimum BER of Ricean fading channel which has small Line-of-Sight (LOS).

  • A variable bit-rate based video services have much limitation for bandwidth management, since its trarfic has a some variances in frame level. In particular, the bandwidth management for video which has characteristics of VBR traffic such a MPEG video could be more complicated. Also, it is difficult to manage the bandwidth effectively for proving a VCR function from VOD service, since we don't know the traffic variance exactly at that time. In this paper, we proposed the dynamic bandwidth allocation a scheme based on VBR traffic based stored video such as MPEG for interactive video service. This scheme can maximize the given total bandwidth through the prefetch based variable length bandwidth allocation scheme and dynamic bandwidth management scheme for multiple streams. Also, our scheme can be used for a MPEG-based bandwidth allocation scheme, and provides the method that can maximize the utilization of network resource for multiple stream by using a dynamic bandwidth management.

  • A novel protocol is proposed to achieve sub-carner-based rate adaptation in OFDM-based wireless systems. The protocol requires the addition of one OFDM symbol to the Clear-to-Send (CTS) packet defined in the IEEE 802.11 standard_ When receiving a Ready-To-Send (RTS) packet, the receiver determines the number of bits to be allocated in each sub-carrier through channel estimation. This decision is delivered to the sender using an additional OFDM symbol. That is, bit-allocation over sub-carriers is achieved using only one additional OFDM symbol. The protocol also provides an error recovery process to synchronize the bit-allocation information between the sender and receiver. The protocol enhances the channel efficiency in spite of the overhead of one additional OFDM symbol.

  • In this paper, the performance of the soft-decision-and-forward (SDF) protocol in the cooperative communication network with one source, one relay, and one destination, where each node has two transmit and receive antennas, is analyzed in terms of the bit error rate (BER) obtained from the pairwise error probability (PEP). For the slow-varying Rayleigh fading channel, the optimal and suboptimal power allocation ratios are determined without feedback. The optimal power allocation can be obtained by minimizing the average PEP. For the tractability, an alternative strategy of maximizing the product SNR of direct and relay links, which we call the suboptimal power allocation, is considered. Through the numerical analysis, we show that the performance gap between the suboptimal and the optimal power allocation is negligible in the high SNR region.
