  • This paper is related to color image segmentation scheme which makes it possible to achieve the excellent segmented results by block-based segmentation using Y/C bit-plane summation image. First, normalized chrominance summation image is obtained by normalizing the image which is summed up the absolutes of color-differential values between R, G, B images. Secondly, upper 2 bits of the luminance image and upper 6bits of and the normalized chrominance summation image are bitwise operated by the pixel to generate the Y/C bit-plane summation image. Next, the Y/C bit-plane summation image divided into predetermined block size, is classified into monotone blocks, texture blocks and edge blocks, and then each classified block is merged to the regions including one more blocks in the individual block type, and each region is selectively allocated to unique marker according to predetermined marker allocation rules. Finally, fine segmented results are obtained by applying the watershed algorithm to each pixel in the unmarked blocks. As shown in computer simulation, the main advantage of the proposed method is that it suppresses the over-segmentation in the texture regions and reduces computational load. Furthermore, it is able to apply global parameters to various images with different pixel distribution properties because they are nonsensitive for pixel distribution. Especially, the proposed method offers reasonable segmentation results in edge areas with lower contrast owing to the regional characteristics of the color components reflected in the Y/C bit-plane summation image.

  • In this paper, MTSVQ(Multirate Tree-Structured Vector Quantization) is introduced for subband image coding. Original images are decomposed into a number of subband components, and multiresolution codebook is designed by MTSVQ algorithm. Optimal bit allocation among the subband components becomes the problem selecting the particular pruned subtree of MTSVQ which has the desired rate and distortion.

  • A wireless LAN medical information transmission system is useful for patients who need mobility in a local area environment. This paper proposes a method using WLAN(wireless local area network) and implements a stand-alone system with MAC(meidum access control) layer protocol referenced IEEE 802.11 draft standard. The system consists of a 8bit-microprocessor which handles media access control protocol and a WL100(GEC Plessey) chip which takes care of phsical layer specific routines and uses a RF module DE6003(GEC Plessey). The major features of the implemented system are the CSMA/CA protocol used a consecutive DATA-ACK trasmission method which yields more effective bandwidth allocation for asyncronous traffic transmission and the modified PCF protocol for time-bounded traffic transmission, which operates in ad-hoc network topology apart from IEEE 802.11 draft standard confirm PCF mode operate in infrastruture topology.

  • In this paper, attempts have been made to compare the subjective performance of sub-band coding (SBC) techniques incorporating four representative modulation transfer functions (MTF's) of th human visual system(HVS): Sakrison, Nill, Ngan, and Rao. In SBC, the frequency band of input signal is split into 16 equal sub-bands. In addition, 28 sub-band splitting schemd which splits more sub-bands in low spatial frequency is considered to compare the 4 MTF's effectively. In encoding of each sub-band, the weight of each sub-band obtained from the MTF of HVS is applied to bit allocation process which minimize the weighted mean square error (WMSE). The differential pulse code modulation(DPCM) coder is used to encode the lowest sub-band and the pulse code modulation(PCM) coder is used for the rest of sub-bands. It is found that the images incorporating the MTF of Rao yields the best results in subjective criteria, followed by Ngan, Nill, Sakrison, and the images not employing the HVS.

  • In this paper, we propose a new power loading algorithm for orthogonalized spatial multiplexing(OSM) systems over flat-fading multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channels. Compared to SVD-based transmission scheme, the OSM scheme exhibits a good system performance with lower complexity and feedback overhead. To further improve the performance in OSM systems with power loading, we introduce a geometric approach on the Euclidean distance between the constellation points in the effective channel. Using this approach, we show that the optimal power loading parameters in terms of the minimum distance can be obtained. Simulation results demonstrate that our algorithm provides a 5dB gain at a bit error rate (BER) of $10^{-4}$ over that of no power loading case with both QPSK and 16-QAM. Consequently, our power loading algorithm allows us to significantly improve the system performance with one additional feedback value.

  • A EEG(ElectroEncephaloGram) compression scheme based on subband coding techniques is presented in this paper. Considering the frequency characteristics of EEG, the raw signal was decomposed into different frequency bands. After decomposition, optimal bit allocation was done by adapting to the standard deviation in each frequency bands, and decomposed signals were quantized using pdf(probability density function)-optimized nonuniform quantizer. Based on the above mentioned coding scheme, coding results of various multichannel EEG signal were shown with compression ratio and SNR(signal-to-noise ratio).

  • This paper proposes a graph-theatrical approach to optimize spatial reuse by adopting a technique that quantizes the channel information into single bit sub-messages. First, we introduce an interference graph to model the network topology. Based on the interference graph, the computational requirements of the algorithm that computes the optimal spatial reuse factor of each user are reduced to quasilinear time complexity, ideal for practical implementation. We perform a resource allocation procedure that can maximize the efficiency of spatial reuse. The proposed spatial reuse scheme provides advantages in beamforming systems, where in the interference with neighbor nodes can be mitigated by using directional beams. Based on results of system level measurements performed to illustrate the physical interference from practical millimeter wave wireless links, we conclude that the potential of the proposed algorithm is both feasible and promising.

  • In this paper, we propose a subband pyramid image coding scheme that uses ECVQ (ntropy Constrained Vector Quantizer). In subband pyramid image coding, each subband can be encoded with a coder matched to the statistics of that particular subband, and available versions of the original image at different resolution are easily obtained. ECVQ, aiming at the minimization of the distortion for a fixed entropy of the quantizer output, is well combined with the subband pyramid image coding which yields high compression ratio and good image quality. The optimum bit allocation to each subbands corresponds to the points where the individual distortion rate curves are of particular slope, weighted to the number of samples in that subband, in designing ECVQ.

  • Video compression algorithms are based on removing spatial and/or temproal redundancy inherent in image sequences by predictive(DPCM) encoding, transform encoding, or a combination of predictive and transform encoding. In this paper, each 8$\times$8 DCT coefficient of DFD(displaced frame difference) is adaptively quantized by one of the four quantizers depending on total distortion level, which is determined by characteristics of HVS(human visual system) and buffer status. Therefore, the number of possible quantizer selection vectors(patterns) is 4$^{64}$. If this vectors are coded, toomany bits are required. Thus, the quantizer selection vectors are limited to 2048 for Y and 512 for each U, V by the proposed method using SWAD(sum of weighted absolute difference) for discriminating vectors. The computer simulation results, using the codebook vectors which are made by the proposed method, show that the subjective and objective image quality (PSNR) are goor with the limited bit allocation.
