This paper introduces a bistatic ISAR imaging technique. In bistatic geometry, the transmitter and receiver are placed in different locations. The monostatic ISAR is inadequate not only for obtaining images on targets approaching along the radar's line of sight, but also for stealth targets. In this paper, geometry, signal modeling as well as bistatic Doppler for bistatic ISAR are introduced to address these problems. Simulations results show bistatic ISAR images as well as monostatic ISAR images against target's moving scenarios, and analyze their differences for each scenario.

The bistatic scattering of an incident wave by a hemi-spherically capped cylinder is of particular interest because it has rarely been studied until the present day. The configuration of a hemi-spherically capped cylinder is similar to naval underwater weapons (submarines, mines, torpedos, etc.), but which is not exactly the same. This paper describes a novel laboratory experiment aimed at direct measurement of bistatic scattering by a hemi-spherically capped cylinder. Bistatic scattering by a hemi-spherically capped cylinder was measured in an acoustic water tank (5m long, 5m wide, 5m deep) using a high frequency projector (120kHz) and hydrophone. Measurements of monostatic scattering were also made under the same conditions. The bistatic scattering pattern by a hemi-spherically capped cylinder was measured against the incident angles $(0^{\circ},\;15^{\circ},\;20^{\circ},\;30^{\circ},\;45^{\circ},\;60^{\circ},\;90^{\circ})$ in order to verify various scattering pattern characteristics by the change of incident angle. The results indicate that the bistatic scattering TS at a wide scattering angle is much stronger than the mono static scattering TS. In bistatic scattering, the forward scattering TS is significantly stronger than the backward scattering TS, and the forward scattering pattern is also broader. In case of seven incident angles, the maximum value of forward scattering TS is about 14dB stronger than that of backward scattering TS. It is also found that forward scattering varies with the incident angle of sound to a much less extent than backscattering, and it is not seriously affected by the incident angle. These features could be the advantages of using forward scattering for detecting underwater targets at long range and increasing detection area and probability.

In this paper, we propose a method to generate SAR(synthetic aperture radar) images for bistatic radar. The bistatic SAR can overcome several limitations of monostatic SAR, because the former can be applied to a variety of scenarios, compared to the latter. However, no study has been conducted on bistatic SAR imaging so far. In this paper, we propose a method to generate bistatic SAR images using the monostatic equivalent model and conventional monostatic SAR imaging algorithms. Simulations using airborne SAR in the bistatic geometry validated the efficacy of the proposed method.

Current low-altitude radar system often fails to detect small unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) because of their small radar cross section (RCS) compared with larger targets. As a potential alternative, a passive bistatic radar system has been considered. We study an optimal deployment problem for the passive bistatic radar system. We model this problem as a covering problem, and develop an integer programming model. The objective of the model is to maximize coverage of a passive bistatic radar system. Our model takes into account factors specific to a bistatic radar system, including bistatic RCS and transmitter-receiver pair coverage. Considering bistatic RCS instead of constant RCS is important because the slight difference of RCS value for small UAVs could significantly influence the detection probability. The paired radar coverage is defined by using the concept of gradual coverage and cooperative coverage to represent a realistic environment.

In this paper, we have identified the system instability factors in a bistatic radar system using pulse chasing and considered their effects on the bistatic receiver's MTI(Moving Target Indication) improvement performance. The pulse chasing is a method to efficiently scan a restricted search area within the limited transmitter power and time in a bistatic radar and to track a series of transmitted pulses using the receiver beam which has ideally matched to the pulse propagation rate. In this paper, we have discussed the interrelationship between the pulse chasing and time and frequency/phase synchronization and described the effects of the identified system instability factors on two kinds of MTI filter configuration, single delay-line and double delay-line, in the bistatic radar. And also, we have confirmed that the overall system improvement is restricted by a lower improvement factor among identified them, and discussed the allowable tolerance of the time and frequency/phase synchronization in the bistatic system.

This paper deals with target positioning performance according to active sonar formation and measurement error. Generally, active sonar can be categorized into Monostatic, Bistatic and Multistatic cases and their error characteristics are different each other. In this paper, on the assumption that each receiver has two kinds of measurements; sum of distances, and a angle between receiver and target, we suggest least square(LS) method that combines the two measurements in Multistatic formation, and compare Multistatic case with Monostatic and Bistatic cases. Experimental results show that target positioning RMSE in Multistatic sonar is superior to those in Monostatic and Bistatic sonar by approximately 57%.

This study describes an omega-K algorithm for focusing bistatic synthetic aperture radar(SAR) data using bistatic-to-monostatic conversion. Bistatic SAR system considered in this study consists of a transmitting antenna and a physical array of several receiving antennas. The length of the physical array is identical to the SAR synthetic aperture. Unlike the monostatic case, an omega-K algorithm for the bistatic case is difficult to obtain the exact equation in the 2D wavenumber domain. The key of the proposed algorithm is converting the bistatic data into a monostatic one. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is proved by simulation and real measurement data.

In this paper, we analyzed the performance of radar target classification using the monostatic and bistatic radar cross section(RCS) for four different wire targets. Short time Fourier transform(STFT) and continuous wavelet transform (CWT) were used for feature extraction from the monostatic RCS and the bistatic RCS of each target, and a multi-layered perceptron(MLP) neural network was used as a classifier. Results show that CWT yields better performance than STFT for both the monostatic RCS and the bistatic RCS. And, when STFT was used, the performance of the bistatic RCS was slightly better than that of the monostatic RCS. However, when CWT was used, the performance of the monostatic RCS was slightly better than that of the bistatic RCS. Resultingly, it is proven that bistatic RCS is a good cadndidate for application to radar target classification in combination with a monostatic RCS.

This paper presents a bistatic to monostatic conversion technique to analyze the bistatic target strength of submarines. The technique involves determining the transmission path length of acoustic waves, which are emitted from a source, scattered off an underwater target, and eventually received by a receiver. By generating a corresponding virtual scattering surface, this method effectively transforms the target strength analysis problem from bistatic to monostatic. The converted monostatic target strength problem can be assessed using a well-established monostatic numerical methods. The bistatic target strength analysis for Benchmark Target Strength Simulation (BeTTSi), a widely used target strength model were performed. The results were compared with those calculated by boundary element methods and Kirchhoff approximation, and confirmed the validity and the practical applicability of the proposed analysis technique for evaluating submarine target strength.

The receiving responses of a bistatic GPR system are analyzed by using three-dimensional FDTD method and equivalent network model. The conventional delta-gap feed model may be inaccurate because of neglecting the impedance matching characteristics between the antenna and the transmission line. In this paper, the feed model is improved by considering the physical characteristics of the actual GPR. The actually received voltage is calculated by employing the equivalent network model in angular frequency-domain, which is composed by using the results of three-dimensional FDTD analysis for an actual bistatic GPR system. The validity of the presented model is assured by showing the convergence of the computed results to the measured data.
