This study was conducted to reduce the exposure dose to the breast and adjacent organs as the number of Mammography increased. Therefore, it has been designed a shield in lead, bismuth + tungsten, and bismuth that does not require to be equipped by the patient, in which each type of shield was compared and analyzed of radiation exposure dose to breast, thyroid, and eye. Using a mammography machine, optically stimulated luminescent dosimeter(OSLD) was inserted to bilateral breast, thyroid, and eye of a dosimetry phantom to measure dose radiated onto the phantom. Shielding device was made in different thickness of 2mm, 3mm, and 5mm and dose evaluation was performed by measuring the dose while using lead, bismuth, and bismuth + tungsten prosthesis. When each shields combined with shielding device, were compared of dose, all showed similar does reduction in the dose to breast, thyroid, and eye in both cranialcaudal and mediolateraloblique view. Based on the current study, bismuth and bismuth + tungsten can replace conventional lead shield and it is anticipated to safely and conveniently reduce radiation exposure to breast, thyroid, and eye with the shield that does not require to be equipped.

By applying an ergonomically developed Bismuth shield to the endovascular treatment of cerebral aneurysm the radiation dose of the scalp and lens from the medical radiation exposure was reduced. The enrtance surface dose was analyzed by measuring the occipital parts, bilateral temporal parts, bilateral quadriceps, and nasal tip of the developed bismuth shield using a photostimulable fluorescence dosimeter before (Group A) before use (Group B). Signal to noise ratio (SNR) and contrast to noise ratio (CNR) analysis were used to evaluate the image quality when Bismuth shielding was used. The mean entrance surface dose of A group and B group was 26.92% lower than that of A group. The analysis of CNR and SNR was the same for both Roadmap and DSA. The use of Bismuth shielding is an alternative that can reduce the radiation impairment due to temporary hair loss and other stochastic effects that may occur after cerebrovascular intervention.
The effective dose and the organ absorbed dose, which are given to a breast in the cases of using and not using the bismuth breast protection shield for the protection of a breast with the coronary artery CT angiography, have been measured and compared for the manual exposure control (MEC)and the automatic exposure control (AEC). In the cases of using and not using the bismuth breast protection shield, it has been found that the measured dose shows the reduction of about 23 to 26% for the MEC and about 22 to 25% for the AEC when the shield is used compared to the case of not using it. By comparing the shield and non-shield cases for the AEC and the MEC, it can be said that the value measured by carrying out the scanning process with the AEC mode has decreased by about 24 to 30% compared to the case of applying the MEC mode. Such a result shows that it is recommended to use the AEC mode for the reduction of the patient's exposure dose during the CT examination.
The purpose of our study was to determine the eyeradiation dose when performing routine multi-detector computed tomography (MDCT). We also evaluated dose reduction and the effect on image quality of using a bismuth eye shield when performing head MDCT. Examinations were performed with a 64MDCT scanner. To compare the shielded/unshielded lens dose, the examination was performed with and without bismuth shielding in anthropomorphic phantom. To determine the average lens radiation dose, we imaged an anthropomorphic phantom into which calibrated photoluminescence glass dosimeter (PLD) were placed to measure the dose to lens. The phantom was imaged using the same protocol. Radiation doses to the lens with and without the lensshielding were measured and compared using the Student t test. In the qualitative evaluation of the MDCT scans, all were considered to be of diagnostic quality. We did not see any differences in quality between the shielded and unshielded brain. The mean radiation doses to the eyewith the shield and to those without the shield were 21.54 versus 10.46 mGy, respectively. The lens shield enabled a 51.3% decrease in radiation dose to the lens. Bismuth in-plane shielding for routine eye and head MDCT decreased radiation dose to the lenswithout qualitative changes in image quality. The other radiosensitive superficial organs specifically must be protected with shielding.

In order to reduce unnecessary exposure doses generated when mammography is performed using a mammography device, a shielding ratio analysis was performed when a self-made shielding body made of bismuth was applied to the breast opposite to the imaging site. In order to determine the scattering dose of uncompressed breasts during CC and MLO tests when the right and left are compressed, the experiment is divided into when bismuth is not shielded (Not used: NU group) and when shielded (Used: U group). Proceeded. The average dose of the NU group was 9.568μSv, and the average dose of the U group was 1.038μSv. The average measured dose before and after the use of the bismuth shield was reduced by 89.15%. The use of a bismuth shield for mammography can shield scattered radiation and keep exposure to radiation to a minimum.

Purpose : To reduce the radiation dose to the thyroid that is affected to scattered radiation, the shield was used. And we evaluated the shielding effect for the thyroid during whole brain radiation therapy. Materials and Methods : To measure the dose of the thyroid, 300cGy were delivered to the phantom using a linear accelerator(Clinac iX VARIAN, USA.)in the way of the 6MV X-ray in bilateral. To measure the entrance surface dose of the thyroid, five glass dosimeters were placed in the 10th slice's surface of the phantom with a 1.5 cm interval. The average values were calculated by measured values in five times each, using bismuth shield, 0.5 mmPb shield, self-made 1.0 mmPb shield and unshield. In the same location, to measure the depth dose of the thyroid, five glass dosimeters were placed in the 10th slice by 2.5 cm depth of the phantom with a 1.5 cm interval. The average values were calculated by measured values in five times each, using bismuth shield, 0.5 mmPb shield, self-made 1.0 mmPb shield and unshield. Results : Entrance surface dose of the thyroid were respectively 44.89 mGy at the unshield, 36.03 mGy at the bismuth shield, 31.03 mGy at the 0.5 mmPb shield and 23.21 mGy at a self-made 1.0 mmPb shield. In addition, the depth dose of the thyroid were respectively 36.10 mGy at the unshield, 34.52 mGy at the bismuth shield, 32.28 mGy at the 0.5 mmPb shield and 25.50 mGy at a self-made 1.0 mmPb shield. Conclusion : The thyroid was affected by the secondary scattering dose and leakage dose outside of the radiation field during whole brain radiation therapy. When using a shield in the thyroid, the depth dose of thyroid showed 11~30% reduction effect and the surface dose of thyroid showed 20~48% reduction effect. Therefore, by using the thyroid shield, it is considered to effectively protect the thyroid and can perform the treatment.

In the medical field, lead aprons are used to protect the human body from radiation. However, lead is a heavy metal that is harmful to the human body and the environment, so various shield are being developed. In this study, bismuth, which has a similar atomic number to lead, was set as a new material and the absorption rate according to thickness in the same energy region was compared and evaluated through Monte Carlo simulation. The same tendency was confirmed when the thickness of the lead shield was 0.25 mm, the thickness of the bismuth was 0.3 mm, when the lead was 0.50 mm, the bismuth was 0.60 mm, and when the lead was 0.75 mm, the bismuth was 0.90 mm. Therefore, it is reasonable to replace lead with bismuth in the shield material.
A shield was made by mixing materials such as bismuth(Bi) and barium(Ba) with silicon to evaluate its shielding ability. Bismuth was made into a shield by mixing a bismuth oxide(Bi2O3) colloidal solution and a silicon base and applied to a fibrous fabric, and barium was made by mixing lead oxide(PbO) and barium sulfate(BaSO4) with a silicon curing agent and solidifying it to make a shield. The test was conducted according to the lead equivalent test method for X-ray protective products of the Korean Industrial Standard. The experiment was conducted by increasing the shielding body one by one from the test condition of 60 kVp, 200 mA, 0.1sec and 100 kVp, 200 mA, 0.1 sec. At 60 kVp, 2 lead oxide-barium sulfate shields, 2 bismuth oxide 1.5 mm shields, and 5 bismuth oxide 0.3 mm shields showed shielding ability equal to or higher than that of lead 0.5 mm. At 100 kVp, 2 lead oxide-barium sulfate shields and 2 bismuth oxide 1.5 mm shields showed shielding ability equal to or higher than that of lead 0.5 mm. It was confirmed that when using 2 pieces of lead oxide-barium sulfate and 1.5 mm of bismuth oxide, respectively, it has shielding ability equivalent to that of lead. Bismuth oxide and lead oxide-barium sulfate are lightweight and have excellent shielding ability, thus they have excellent properties to be used as an apron for radiation protection or other shielding materials.

Cerebral nervous system intervention procedures have been reported frequently due to radiation exposure such as skin baldness, hair loss, and redness due to prolonged procedures. Therefore, the bismuth shield designed to reduce the radiation exposure of the target organ located in the anterior part of the human body sensitive to skin and radiation sensitivity during CT (computed tomography) scan is applied to the cerebral vascular system intervention by ergonomic design, To reduce the radiation dose of sensitive scalp, we propose a study.
The CT can accurately present the anatomical structure of an organ in the human body, and the resolution of the image is excellent. On Brain CT examination, the radiation sensitivity of the orbit is high and it is subject to many exposure effects. To reduce exposure dose of lens, this study compares change of exposure dose and shielding rate about non-shielding and shielding in a way of using two shielding materials, bismuth and tungsten. In this study, we used bismuth and tungsten filament as shielding materials made by 3D printing to measure the exposure dose according to the materials thickness and each of slices. To compare each shielding rate, 1 mm to 5 mm of two materials was measured with the head phantom fixed and the Magicmax universal dosimeter placed on the eye when the shielding material is not placed, and the shielding material is placed on it. In the 1 mm thick filament, the bismuth filament showed 26.8% and the tungsten filament showed 43.1% shielding rate. Therefore, tungsten presents much greater shielding effect than bismuth.
