Study on 1,200 N-class bipropellant rocket engine using decomposed $H_2O_2$ and kerosene (분해된 과산화수소와 케로신을 이용한 1,200 N 급 이원추진제 로켓 엔진의 연구)

  • As part of preliminary study for development of 1,200 N-class bipropellant rocket engine with the concentrated hydrogen peroxide, bipropellant engine elements were designed and experimentally tested. The catalysts of $MnO_2$ and $MnO_2$ added Pb as an addictive were compared to achieve high decomposition performance and the catalytic reactor with $MnO_2$ added Pb was designed and its decomposition efficiency of 97.2% was achieved. The autoignition tests of kerosene by decomposed hydrogen peroxide were carried out under various equivalence ratios to ignite without additional ignition sources. Autoignition were achieved in all experimental conditions and $C^*$ efficiencies at each condition were at or above 90%. From the measured thrust results, the highest value was 830 N which is in corresponds with 1,035 N at vacuum level using 94.1% theoretical $I_{sp}$.

  • A propulsion system of a satellite provides a necessary thrust to reach to the final orbit after a separation from a launch vehicle. Also, it supplies pulse moments to maintain the satellite in a mission orbit and for its attitude controls during a mission life time. The present study investigates the development trend of bipropellant rocket engines for an orbit transfer and an attitude control of a satellite using monomethylhydrazine and hydrazine for fuel and dinitrogen tetroxide for oxidizer to derive fundamental specifications which are necessary for domestic development researches. Also, their major performance characteristics are summarized.

  • "KAGUYA"(SELENE) is a Japanese Lunar Explorer launched by H-IIA rocket from Tanegashima Space Center on 14 September 2007. The dual-mode bipropellant propulsion subsystem of KAGUYA includes two fuel tanks, an oxidizer tank, propellant and pressurant control components, twelve monopropellant 20N thrusters, eight monopropellant 1N thrusters, and a bipropellant 500N Orbit Maneuver Engine(OME). Once the KAGUYA separated from the rocket, it circled the Earth twice and traveled to the Moon, where it entered lunar orbit. All maneuvers were performed through multiple 500N OME/20N thruster firings. This paper describes the in-space performance of KAGUYA Lunar Explorer bipropellant propulsion subsystem.

  • In the framework of COMS(Communication, Ocean and Meteorological Satellite) programme, the first bipropellant propulsion system for GEO satellite has been developed successfully. So far Korea has its own experience of development of a monopropellant propulsion system for LEO satellites, i.e., KOMPSAT's. Other types of propulsion systems for a satellite, such as cold gas and electric propulsion etc., are being developed somewhere in Korea, however they are not commercialised yet, apart from those two systems aforementioned. This paper mainly focused on the design of the Chemical Propulsion System(CPS) for the COMS, joint scientific and communications satellite. It includes descriptions of the general system design and a summary of the supporting analysis performed to verify suitability for space flight. Essentially it provides an overview and guide to the various engineering rationale generated in support of the COMS CPS design activities. The manufacture and subsequent testing of COMS CPS are briefly discussed. Feasibility of COMS CPS to an interplanetary mission is proposed as well.

  • Space propulsion system produces required thrust for satellites and space launch vehicles by using chemical reactions of a liquid fuel and a liquid oxidizer typically. Among several liquid propellants, the monomethylhydrazine-dinitrogen tetroxide is expecially preferred for a GEO satellite propellants due to their better storability in liquid phase during a long mission life under a freezing space environment. Recently, a development of the monomethylhydrazine-dinitrogen tetroxide bipropellant system becomes important as the national space program requires the heavier and the more efficient space system. Thus, the objective of the present study is to review a foreign research trend of a chemical reaction between the monomethyhydrazine fuel and the dinitrogen tetroxide oxidizer to understand a fundamental basis of their characteristics to prepare for domestic development in future.

  • COMS (Communication, Ocean and Meteorological Satellite) is a geosynchronous satellite and has been developing by KARI and Astrium for Ka-band communication, ocean observation and meteorological observation. COMS Chemical Propulsion System (CPS) uses a bipropellant propulsion subsystem, which is applied for transferring COMS from GTO to GEO (mission orbit) and implementing station-keeping manoeuvres. In this paper COMS CPS is briefly introduced for understanding. A few of mathematical thermodynamic modelings of bipropellant propulsion system in literatures are reviewed and authors has studied those models for developing a computer program, which predicts variations of thermodynamic properties such as temperature and pressure histories in the helium pressurant tank, MMH propellant tank and NTO propellant tank during LAE firing and on-orbit manoeuvrings. The CPS thermodynamic model may be used to compute pressurant and propellant masses and to size tank volumes.

  • Ramjets are capable of much higher specific impulse than liquid rocket engines for high speed flight in the atmosphere. Ramjets, however, cannot generate thrust at low flight speed. Therefore, an additional propulsion device to accelerate the ramjet vehicle to a supersonic speed is required. In this study, we propose a novel ramjet propulsion system with a $H_2O_2$/Kerosene rocket as the accelerator for initial stage. In order to test the feasibility of this concept, consecutive reactors was built; one for the decomposition of $H_2O_2$ and the other for kerosene combustion. Decomposed $H_2O_2$ jet was injected to combustor through converging nozzle from gas generator and over this hot oxygen jet, kerosene was injected by spay injector. Through the various test cases, hypergolic ignition test was carried out and steady combustion was achieved.

  • Chollian bipropellant propulsion system is composed of one main engine for orbit transfer and fourteen thrusters for on-station operations. The design and analyses of the propulsion system were carried out in the framework of international collaboration. Following the system integration and testings required, the Chollian was transported to Kourou Space Center in French Guiana and launched successfully. After it separated from the launcher, the propulsion system was initialised automatically. Then three times of main engine firing were successfully performed, and the target obit insertion was accomplished.

Preliminary Research of Regenerative Cooling Channel Design for Small Scale Bipropellant Thruster (소형 이원추진제 추력기를 위한 재생냉각 유로형상 설계에 대한 선행연구)

  • Applicability of regenerative cooling in 2,500 N-class bipropellant thruster using hydrogen peroxide and kerosene was considered for improvement of performance and application in various missions. Calculation was performed by one dimensional approach using hydrogen peroxide as a coolant. The heat flux of thruster at nozzle throat was estimated at 18 - 20 MW/$m^2$. Designed cooling channel width and height were 2.5 mm and 0.5 mm, respectively. Based on designed cooling channel configuration, flat plate model was manufactured and tested for estimation of pressure drop in cooling channel, and CFD analysis was compared with the test result. The maximum error between CFD analysis and experimental result was approximately 13% and average error was approximately 5%.

Performance evaluation on characteristic length variation of $H_2O_2$/Kerosene bipropellant rocket engine (특성길이 변화에 따른 $H_2O_2$/Kerosene 이원추진제 로켓 엔진의 성능평가)

  • In addition to the previous study for development of a 1,200 N-class bipropellant rocket engine with concentrated hydrogen peroxide, the effect of characteristic length and thrust measurement were experimentally evaluated. Tests with characteristic lengths of 0.95, 1.07, and 1.20 m were performed and $C^*$ and Isp efficiencies were increased as increasing characteristic length. The maximum $C^*$ and Isp efficiencies were 98.4% and 93.1% respectively. Based on the evaluation of the designed engine, the optimized characteristic length was proposed in using the engine adapted decomposed hydrogen peroxide and the engine performance at vacuum-level was evaluated using thrust and Isp efficiency at the designed equivalence ratio. As a result, 218.4 s at sea-level, 253.3 s at vacuum-level, and vacuum thrust of 1035.3 N can be estimated.
