In this study, we introduce a triple-band flexible implantable antenna that is tuned by using a ground slot in three specific bands, namely Medical Implanted Communication Service (MICS: 402-405 MHz) for telemetry, the midfield band (lower gigahertz: 1.45-1.6 GHz) for Wireless Power Transfer (WPT), and the Industrial, Scientific and Medical band (ISM: 2.4-2.45 GHz) for power conservation. This antenna is wrapped inside a printed 3D capsule prototype to show its applicability in different implantable or ingestible devices. The telemetry performance of the proposed antenna was simulated and measured by using a porcine heart. From the simulation and measurement, we found that use of a ground slot in the implantable antenna can improve the antenna performance and can also reduce the Specific Absorption Rate (SAR).
Fish are an essential resource in human society, and while ecological research on them is challenging, it is absolutely necessary. Recent technologies enabled researchers to monitor underwater fish behavior. Acoustic signals, satellite-mediated location estimation, and light-based geolocation are powerful tools for tracking fish movements from freshwater to deep-sea habitats. These tools allow us to track various fish species and elucidate their ecology. Furthermore, based on these technologies, we can develop fisheries management plans and enhance aquaculture productivity. In this review, we also discuss challenges in improving current technologies and provide future recommendations for fish bio-logging studies.
A dual-band bio-implantable compact antenna with a meander-line structure is presented. The proposed meander-line antenna resonates at the industrial, scientific, and medical (2.4 GHz) and wireless medical telemetry (1.4 GHz) bands. The meander-line structure is selected as a radiating patch given its versatile and effective design. With a dimension of only 10 mm × 10 mm × 0.635 mm, the designed antenna is compact. Considering a skin phantom, the proposed antenna was designed, optimized, and simulated. The Rogers RT/duroid 6010 substrate material with high dielectric constant was used to fabricate the meander-line dual-band implantable antenna, which was validated experimentally. The superstrate was made of the same material. Experiments were conducted on skin-mimicking gel. The designed meander-line antenna has a high peak gain of -21 dBi at 2.4 GHz, and its maximum specific absorption rate is compliant with IEEE safety standards.
In this study, ubiquitous health care system attaching in chair to monitor ECG for health care was developed at the unconsciousness state. The system conveniently and simple measured ECG at non-consciousness. We measured the contact impedance to skin-electrode of metal mesh electrodes of the system. Contact impedance enable the electrode to use for ECG measurement. The results are that the impedance of the metal mesh electrodes according to sizes is low when the size is 4$cm^2$. As the result, when the size of the metal mesh electrode is 4$cm^2$, the electrode is fit for ECG measurement. We can acquired by positing the arm on the metal mesh electrode. The ECG signal was detected using a high-input-impedance bio-amplifier, and then passed filter circuitry. The measured signal transmitted to a PC through the bluetooth wireless communication and monitored. Data of the non-constrained ECG system attaching in chair is noise-data when comparing metal mesh electrode with the Ag/Agcl electrode but the data is significant to monitor ECG for check the body state.
Black-tailed gulls, Larus crassirostris, have been known as resident birds in Korea, but their wintering and breeding habitat ranges were little known about. We investigated the habitat ranges of Blacktailed gulls breeding on Dokdo Island - which is the eastern end of their breeding colonies in Korea. Three adult Black-tailed gulls were fitted with Global Positioning System data loggers in May 2018 and their positions were tracked for 9 days, 245 days and 365 days each respectively. Black-tailed gulls stayed on Dokdo Island until June for breeding purposes and moved down to the southern part of Japan for wintering. The following year, a Black-tailed gull started to move northward in February and returned to Dokdo Island in April. They traveled a total of $207,334-229,507km^2$ (MCP) throughout a whole year. Based on location density categories accounting for 50% of locations, they used 3,618 to $3,803km^2$ in area. Black-tailed gulls breeding on Dokdo Island used smaller habitat ranges during the wintering period than the other periods. This is the first report on the habitat ranges of Black-tailed gulls breeding on Dokdo Island.
This experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of the broiler's genotype ($G_t$) and ambient temperature ($T_a$) on performance and core body temperature ($T_core$) of broiler chicks. A factorial arrangement of two $G_t$ (Hubbard and ISA J57 chicks) and two $T_a$ (moderate, $23{\pm}0.5^{\circ}C$ and hot, $33{\pm}0.5^{\circ}C$) were used in this study. Performance data (body weight gain, feed intake and feed:gain ratio) were determined weekly for six weeks. Chicks' $T_core$ was measured using a biotelemetric system between Weeks five and six. Results showed that body weight gain and feed intake were significantly high, and feed:gain ratio was significantly low for Hubbard chicks compared to those of ISA J57 chicks. High $T_a$ significantly reduced weight gain and feed intake. Furthermore, the reduction in body weight gain and feed intake under the hot $T_a$ was more pronounced for Hubbard chicks than those of the ISA J57 chicks resulting in significant $G_t$ by $T_a$ interaction. Chicks grown under moderate $T_a$ had significantly lower $T_core$ than those grown under hot $T_a$. The $T_core$ of the Hubbard chicks was significantly lower than that of the ISA J57 at the moderate $T_a$ while under the hot $T_a$, the magnitude of the change in $T_core$ was more pronounced in Hubbard chicks than that of ISA J57; this resulted in a significant $G_t$ by $T_a$ interaction. The results of this study indicate that chicks with higher potential for growth under thermo-neutral temperature are more susceptible to heat stress than chicks with lower potential for growth. This maybe due, at least in part, to their lower body $T_core$ under moderate temperature and to the lesser ability of these fast growing chicks to regulate their $T_core$ when exposed to heat stress, as was clearly shown on these birds' performance.
This study aimed to examine the effect of external pop-up satellite archival tags (PSATs) attachment and water temperature on the oxygen consumption rate (OCR) of the olive flounder (mean body weight 2281.7 g). The OCRs of fish were measured under conditions of three different water temperature conditions (15, 20, and 25℃) and two different tagging methods [non-tagging, control; bio-logger external attachment with a miniature PSAT (dummy mrPAT), BEA] using a closed flow-through respirometer. The OCRs of fish linearly increased with the increase in water temperature in both the control and BEA (P<0.001); however, the OCRs of BEA were approximately 1.8-1.9 times lower than those of the control at each water temperature (P<0.001). The Q10 values of the control and BEA were the highest in the water temperature range of 15 to 20℃, but sensitivity to water temperature changes was higher in BEA than in the control. The metabolic energy loss rate (MEL) of fish increased with increasing water temperature regardless of external tagging, but the MEL of the control was higher than that of BEA (P<0.001). These results demonstrate that OCR, thermal sensitivity, and energy expenditure are all affected in adult olive flounder with external PSAT attachment.
