Dramatic price increases of fossil fuels and the economic development of emerging nations accelerates the transformation of forest lands into monocultures, e.g. for biofuel production. On this account, cost efficient methods to enable the monitoring of land resources has become a vital ambition. The application of remote sensing techniques has become an integral part of forest attribute estimation and mapping. The aim of this study was to evaluate the potentials of the kNN method by combining terrestrial with remotely sensed data for the development of a pixel-based monitoring system for the small scaled mosaic of different land use types of the off-reserve forests of the Goaso forest district in Ghana, West Africa. For this reason, occurrence and distribution of land use types like cocoa and non-timber forest resources, such as bamboo and raphia palms, were estimated, applying the kNN method to ASTER satellite data. Averaged overall accuracies, ranging from 79% for plantain, to 83% for oil palms, were found for single-attribute classifications, whereas a multi-attribute approach showed overall accuracies of up to 70%. Values of k between 3 and 6 seem appropriate for mapping bamboo. Optimisation of spectral bands improves results considerably.
The soil hypotrichs collected from the moss-covered soils in the campus of Seoul National University were identified as Holosticha multistylata Kahl, 1928 and H. sylvatica Foissner, 1982. These two species are discovered for the first time from Korea and redescribed with illustrations. The description was based on the observation of living specimens, protargol impregnated specimens and biometric analysis. They are distinguished from congeneric species by their following characteristics : 4 frontal cirri in H. multistylata and 7-8 in H. sylvatica, 3 buccal cirri in H. multistylata and 1 in H. sylvatica, 3 dorsal kineties in H. multistylata and 5 in H. sylvatica.
Two euplotid ciliates collected from the estuarine littorals in Korea were identified as Euplotes vannus ($M\ddot{u}ller$, 1786) and E. parawoodruffi Song and Bradbury, 1997. These species are reported taxonomically for the first time from Korea. These two species are redescribed with illustrations, photos and biometry based on live and silver impregnated specimens. Diagnostics of each species are as follows. E. vannus: size in vivo $94-111{\times}55-75{\mu}m$ (average $103{\times}60{\mu}m)$, adoral zone of membranelles (AZM) 70% of cell length with 57-74 adoral membranelles (AM) and terminating close to hook-shape, macronucleus (Ma) C-shaped with twisted foot-like, 10 frontoventral (FVC), 5 transverse (TC), 4-7 (average 5) caudal cirri (CC), 9-10 dorsal kineties (DK), mid dorsal kinety with 15-22 cilia; silver-line system single vannus type. E. parawoodruffi: size in vivo $125-163{\times}72-100{\mu}m$, (average $141{\times}87{\mu}m$), dorsally strongly arched, body shaped reserved triangular. AZM 67-83% of cell length with 60-85 AMs, 9 FVC, 5 TC, 4 CC, 9 DK; mid-dorsal kinety with 20-30 cilia, double-eurystomus type, T-shaped Ma with equal sized right and left arms or right arm shortened slightly.
A line of Japanese quail selected for increased body weight for 15 generations (C) and an unselected control line (K) were used to examine the impact of selection for body weight on the growth curve of Japanese quail. In addition, the effect of sex on the growth curve in each line was also studied, namely females of C (CF), males of C (CM), females of K (KF) and males of K (KM). The monophasic and diphasic growth models were studied for adequacy in describing growth curves of quail in both sexes of the C and K lines. The monophasic function provided almost the same growth rate for both sexes in both lines. However, the growth rates calculated by means of the diphasic function differed between sexes for both lines, except for those calculated for C during the second growth phase. While there were 2-3 days difference between sexes in age at maximum gain in both lines with a monophasic model, the difference between sexes in the age at maximum gain in both lines became greater according to the diphasic model. There were 5 and 7 days difference between sexes in the age at maximum gain in line C for the first and second growth phases, respectively. A difference between sexes of 18 and 11 days in the age at maximum gain for the first and second phases, respectively, was estimated for line K when the diphasic function was fitted. The use of diphasic functions provides more detailed information on growth patterns. The results showed that the use of the diphasic function was better because it provided greater insights into understanding the biology of growth.

Purpose: Resorption of the alveolar bone is an unavoidable consequence of tooth extraction when appropriate alveolar ridge preservation (ARP) measures are not taken. The objective of this trial was to test the hypothesis that dimensional changes in the alveolar bone after tooth extraction would be reduced by inserting an equine collagen membrane and a collagen cone to fill and seal the alveolus (as ARP), in comparison to extraction with untreated alveoli. Methods: In this randomized clinical trial, 31 patients were directly treated with the collagen material after extraction of a tooth from the maxilla (the ARP group). Twenty-nine patients served as the control group. After extraction, no further treatment (i.e., no socket preservation measures) was performed in the control group. Changes in the alveolar process immediately after extraction and after an 8 (${\pm}1$)-week healing period were evaluated 3-dimensionally. Blinded analyses were performed after superimposing the data from the digitalized impressions and surfaces generated by cone-beam computed tomography. Results: Both the ARP and control groups showed a reduction of bone in the alveolar area after tooth extraction. However, significantly less bone resorption was detected in the clinically relevant buccal region in the ARP group. The median bone reduction was 1.18 mm in the ARP group and 5.06 mm in the control group (P=0.03). Conclusions: The proposed hypothesis that inserting a combination material comprising a collagen cone and membrane would lead to a difference in alveolar bone preservation can be accepted for the clinically relevant buccal distance. In this area, implantation of the collagen material led to significantly less alveolar bone resorption. German Clinical Trials Register at www.drks.de, DRKS00004769.
This study was designed to determine the usability of lemon fiber (LF-2%, 4%, 6%) and carrot fiber (CF-2%, 4%, 6%) to produce lowfat beef hamburgers. To that end, a certain amount of fat was replaced with each fiber. The proximate composition, pH value, cholesterol content, cooking characteristics, color, texture profile, and sensory properties of low-fat beef hamburgers were investigated. LF increased moisture content and cooking yield due to its better water binding properties, while CF caused higher fat and cholesterol contents owing to its higher fat absorption capacity (p<0.05). LF resulted in a lighter, redder, and more yellow color (p<0.05). Hardness, gumminess, springiness, and chewiness parameters decreased when the usage level of both fibers increased (p<0.05). However, more tender, gummy, springy, and smoother hamburgers were produced by the addition of CF in comparison with LF (p<0.05). Moreover, hamburgers including CF were rated with higher sensory scores (p<0.05). In conclusion, LF demonstrated better technological results in terms of cooking yield, shrinkage, moisture retention, and fat retention. However it is suggested that CF produces better low-fat hamburgers since up to 2% CF presented sensory and textural properties similar to those of regular hamburgers.
Scientific evidence for the primary prevention of cancer caused by physical activity of regular moderate-intensity or greater is rapidly accumulating in this field. About 300 epidemiologic studies on the association between physical activity and cancer risk have been conducted worldwide. The objectives of this paper were three-fold: (i) to describe briefly the components of physical activity and its quantification; (ii) to summarize the most important conclusions available from comprehensive reports, and reviews of the epidemiologic individual and intervention studies on a role physical activity in cancer prevention; (iii) to present proposed biological mechanisms accounting for effects of activity on cancer risk. The evidence of causal linked physical activity and cancer risk is found to be strong for colon cancer - convincing; weaker for postmenopausal breast and endometrium cancers - probable; and limited suggestive for premenopausal breast, lung, prostate, ovary, gastric and pancreatic cancers. The average risk reductions were reported to be 20-30%. The protective effects of physical activity on cancer risk are hypothesized to be through multiple interrelated pathways: decrease in adiposity, decrease in sexual and metabolic hormones, changes in biomarkers and insulin resistance, improvement of immune function, and reduction of inflammation. As there are several gaps in the literature for associations between activity and cancer risk, additional studies are needed. Future research should include studies dealing with limitations in precise estimates of physical activity and of a lack of consensus on what defines sedentary behavior of individuals and those linked with the proposed biomarkers to cancer risk and controlled exercise intervention trials.

An efficient method for reducing power consumption in pipelined deep packet inspection systems is proposed. It is based on the observation that the number of memory accesses is dominant for the power consumption and the number of accesses drops drastically as the input goes through stages of the pipelined AC-DFA. A DPI system is implemented where the operating frequency of the stages that are not frequently used in the pipeline is reduced to eliminate the waste of power consumption. The power consumption of the proposed DPI system is measured upon various input character set and up to 25% of reduction of total power consumption is obtained, compared to those of the recent DPI systems. The method can be easily applied to other pipelined architecture and string searching applications.
Background: The objective of this study was to underline that litter size as a key trait of sows needs new parameters to be evaluated and to target an individual optimum. Large individual variation in litter size affects both production and piglet's survival and health negatively. Therefore, two new traits were suggested and analyzed. Two data sets on 5509 purebred German Landrace sows and 3926 Large White and crossing sows including at least two parental generations and at least five parities were subjected to variance components analysis. Results: The new traits for evaluating litter size were derived from the individual numbers of total born piglets (TBP) per parity: In most cases, sows reach their maximum litter size in their fourth parity. Therefore, data from at least five parities were included. The first observable maximum and minimum of TBP, and the individual variation expressed by the range were targeted. Maximum of TBP being an observable trait in pig breeding and management yielded clearly higher heritability estimates ($h^2{\sim}0.3$) than those estimates predominantly reported so far. Maximum TBP gets closer to the genetic capacity for litter size than other litter traits. Minimum of TBP is positively correlated with the range of TBP ($r_p=0.48$, $r_g$ > 0.6). The correlation between maximum of TBP and its individually reached frequency was negative in both data sets ($r_p=-0.28$ and - 0.22, respectively). Estimated heritability coefficients for the range of TBP comprised a span of $h^2=0.06$ to 0.10. Conclusion: An optimum both for maximum and range of total born piglets in selecting sows is a way contributing to homogenous litters in order to improving the animal-related conditions both for piglets' welfare and economic management in pig.

Clarithromycin resistance in Helicobacter pylori is a principal cause of failure of eradication therapies, and its prevalence varies geographically. The IceA gene is a virulence factor associated with clinical outcomes. The objective of this study was to determine the current state of clarithromycin resistance prevalence, and to investigate the role of iceA genotypes in 87 Turkish adult patients (65 with functional dyspepsia and 22 with duodenal ulcer). A2143G and A2144G point mutations were tested by PCR-RFLP for clarithromycin resistance. Among the patients in the study, 28 patients were tested by agar dilution as well. Allelic variants of the iceA gene were identified by PCR. A total of 24 (27.6%) strains evidenced one of the mutations, either A2143G or A2144G. IceA1 was found to be positive in 28 of the strains (32.2 %), iceA2 was positive in 12 (13.8 %) and, both iceA1 and iceA2 were positive in 22 (25.3 %) strains. In conclusion, we discovered no relationships between iceA genotypes and functional dyspepsia or duodenal ulcer, nor between clarithromycin resistance and iceA genotypes. clarithromycin resistance appears to be more prevalent in Turkish patients.
