As body postures on bed affects various sleep related diseases, it is considered as important information when monitoring sleeping in daily life. Though there have already been a few approaches to monitor body postures on bed conventionally, the development for simple and unconstrained methods is still needed to realize the long-term daily monitoring. Focusing on the fact that ballistocardiogram changes depending on the body postures on bed, we developed a novel method to estimate body posturesusing extremely simple, film-type ballistocardiogram sensor which is based on polyvinylidene fluoride(PVDF) film. With 10 subjects, we performed two experiments. One was for an estimation test to show that body postures on bed can be estimated by ballistocardiogram, and the other was for a reproducibility test to present the feasibility of ballistocardiogram based body postures monitoring. To estimate body postures on bed, we made an individual template set of body postures by designating one ballistocardiogram (BCG) sample as a template in each postures. Then, we calculated Pearson's correlation coefficients between a sample and each templates and estimated the body posture of the sample by choosing a posture which corresponds to the most significant correlation coefficients. As a result, we estimated body postures on bed with 99.2% accuracy in average and found that the estimation using ballistocardiogram is reproducible.

African swine fever virus (ASFV) is a highly contagious and lethal pathogen that poses a threat to the global pork industry. The World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH) has placed strict surveillance measures for ASFV. The possibility of long-term survival of ASFV in raw meat or undercooked pork has been reported. Accordingly, the problem of secondary infection in food waste from households or waste disposal facilities has emerged, raising the need for ASFV monitoring of food waste. However, most of the previously reported ASFV gene detection methods are focused on clinical monitoring of pigs. There are very few cases in which their application in waste has been verified. Since ASFV diagnosis requires rapid monitoring and immediate action, loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) may be suitable, but this requires conformity assessment for LAMP to be used as a diagnostic technique. In this study, six LAMP methods were evaluated, and two methods (kit and manual) were recommended for use in diagnosing ASFV in food waste.

In this study, we have proposed a simple cardiorespiratory monitoring method based on displacements of human body which occurs due to periodic heartbeat and breathing. The proposed system consists of an aircushion, pressure sensing hardware and heartbeat and respiration signals extraction algorithm. The aircushion was used for unconstrained measurement of the respiration and heartbeats without a sensor attached on the subject's skin surface. The displacements of subject sitting on the aircushion cause small pressure variations. These variations are amplified and filtered with the pressure sensing hardware. Finally, heart rate and respiration rate are extracted by signal processing algorithm based on frequency domain filter. To evaluate the performance, extracted respiration and heart rate from proposed system were compared with conventional methods. The average sensitivity of respiration and heart rate are 98.67% and 99.24%, respectively. These results show the proposed method has advantages of installing and processing simplicity so as to be used easily in unconstrained respiration and heart rate monitoring in daily life.
Sessile marine bivalves including mussels, oysters and clams are often used as a sentinel species in coastal environmental monitoring since changes in the environmental quality are often well preserved in their tissues and shells. In this study, we investigated overall health condition of the Mediterranean Mussel, Mytilus galloprovincialis on the south coast using histology. Reproductive condition as gonad index (GI), condition index (CI) as a ratio of the tissue weight to the shell weight, digestive gland atrophy (DGA), types of parasites, and pathologic conditions including erosion, necrosis, hemocyte infiltration, and neoplasia were examined from each histological preparation. GI decreased from March to July then increased from July to September and spawning mussel could be observed as early as in April and the activity continued until September. CI also followed the monthly changes in GI, indicating that decrease in CI was associated with the weight loss due to spawning. DGA increased from March to June, decreased in July and increased from July to September. High DGA values observed in June and September were coincided with spawning and high water temperature. Histology also showed high prevalence of erosion in the digestive gland in June (36.0%) and September (56.4%), suggesting that high water temperature and spawning acted as environmental stressors. No parasitic organism was identified during the survey, although some symbiotic copepods were observed. Histology was found to be useful and affordable technique in monitoring the overall health of mussel, providing useful pathologic information of the cells and tissues.
PDA-based monitoring is used to acquire continuously the patient's vital signs, including electrocardiography, activity, heart rate and $SpO_2$. In this paper, A biomedical signal acquisition device was designed using 3-axial MEMS accelerometer and 1-ch ECG amplifier, to have the function of monitoring activity and electrocardiography. The proposed system is composed of transmitter and receiver. Through the Zigbee communication, subject's biosignals can be transmitted in real-time to receiver, and transmitted data confirmed using PDA. The packet size used in this device was set not to exceed a maximum payload size of 116 byte. One packet consists of two segments. The transmission speed was 21 packet per second, 420 ECG samples per second, and 42 acceleration samples per second. The proposed method can be used to develop Activities of Daily Living(ADL} monitoring devices for the elderly or movement impaired people and enables patients to be monitored without any constraints. Also, this method will reduce medical costs in the aged society.
This paper proposes a portable ECG monitoring system, which integrates uptodate PDA and RF communication technology. The aim of the study is to acquire the subject's biomedical signal without any constraint. It has two types of transmission mode, which are total signal transmission mode and HR(heart rate)/SC(step count) transmission mode. In audition, wireless communication technology uses Zigbee Wireless PAN and can work in low-power mode, which is one of the advantages of ZiBbee communication technology. The developed system is composed of a transmitter and a receiver. The transmitter has three-axial acceleration sensor. ECG amplifier and Zigbee communication controller. In total signal transmission mode, it can send data 50 packets per second whose transmission speed corresponds to 300 ECG samples and 60 acceleration samples. In HR/SG transmission mode, it can calculate heart rate from EEG data with 216 samples per second and step count from acceleration data and send a packet every cardiac cycle. The receiver forwards the received data to PDA, where the data can be stored and displayed. Therefore, the developed device enables to continuous monitoring for Activities of Daily Living(ADL). Also, this method will reduce medical costs in the aged society.

The purpose of intra-operative neurological monitoring (INM) is to minimize surgically induced nerve damage, sensory nerves and motor neurons without affecting the operations to proceed during surgery such as evoked potentials (EP), electromyography (EMG), electroencephalography (EEG), transcranial doppler (TCD), etc. During the course of checking a patient's condition, surveillance of ambulatory patients is a very different thing to check if the test is done under general anesthesia. INM can be possible or impossible depending on the type of drugs used and their concentrations because the monitoring is performed under anesthesia. Therefore, it is emphasized on the necessity of reviewing anesthesia which influences on INM.
We have developed a patient monitoring system including module-based bedside monitors, interbed network, central stations, clinical workstations, and DB servers. A bedside monitor with a color LCD can accommodate up to 3 module cases and 21 different modules. Six different physiological parameters of ECG, respiration, invasive blood pressure, noninvasive blood pressure, body temperature, and arterial pulse oximetry with plethysmoyaph are provided as parameter modules. In a single bedside monitor, modules and a module controller communicate with IMbps data rate through an intrabed network based on RS-485 and HDU protocol. At the same time, it communicates with other bedside monitors and central stations through interbed network based on 1 OMbps Ethernet and TCP/IP protocol. Central stations using 20" color CRT monitors can be connected with many bedside monitors and they display 18 channels of waveforms simultaneously. Clinical workstations are used mainly for the review of patient datE In order to accommodate more advanced data management capabilities such as 24-hour full disclosure, we have developed a relational database server dedicated to the patient monitoring system. Software for bedside monitor, central station, and clinical workstation fully utilizes graphical user interface techniques and all functions are controlled by a rotate/push button on the bedside monitor arid a mouse on the central station and clinical workstation. The entire system satisfies the requirements of AAMI and ANSI standards in terms of electrical safety and performances.nces.
Since a Holter monitor records a patients' ECG when he is in motion, it can monitor complex heart disease effectively. But it can not handle a sudden heart disease because the diagnosis process will be done only after 24 hours. So in this study, a model of ambulatory monitoring system using wireless data communication network is proposed. And a mobile ECG equipment and a doctors' terminal are developed for the proposed system implementation. As a result, we can evaluate that the proposed ambulatory monitoring system is suitable for the management of ambulatory patients who may be at risk form sudden cardiac abnormalities.
As information technologies are developing, the improvement of the quality of life becomes worldwide issues. Especially, to improve the quality of life of a patient suffering intermittent diseases, in addition to the some portable equipments for measuring, analyzing, and notifying the status of the patients, methods of communication for seamless transmission of the measured data over to the remote site, such as an emergency center or a hospital, are required. In this paper, we address a seamless transmission of patient monitoring data such as ECG from a moving patient to a remote site, wherever the patient may be. We divide the whole environments into two wireless communication environments: an indoor one based on WLAN and an outdoor one based on CDMA cellular network in which the patient is assumed to move anywhere. We develop algorithms, implement them on a PDA-based hardware platform, and show some of the results for handover between the two environments in addition to the data transmission for each of the two environments.
