The use of biomass is increasing as a response to the convention on climate change. In Korea, a method applied to replace fossil fuels is using wood chips in a cogeneration plant. To remove air pollutants generated by burning wood chips, a selective denitrification facility (Selective catalytic reduction, SCR) is installed downstream. However, problems such as ash deposition and descaling of the equipment surface have been reported. The cause is thought to be unreacted ammonia slip caused by ammonia ions injected into the reducing agent and metal corrosion caused by an acidic environment. Element analysis confirmed that ash contained alkali metals and sulfur that could cause catalyst poisoning, leading to an increase in the size of ash particle and deposition. Measurement of the size of ash deposited inside the facility confirmed that the size of ash deposited on the catalyst was approximately three times larger than the size of generally formed ash. Therefore, it was concluded that a reduction in pore area of the catalyst by ash deposition on the surface of the catalyst could lead to a problem of increasing differential pressure in a denitrification facility.
Fuel blend technique is one of the most effective way of using biomass to replace the coal. Many studies on combustion characteristics with coal and biomass blends have been conducted. In this study, char reactivity and emission characteristics of coal (Suek) and biomass (EFB) blends has been investigated by TGA and DTF to evaluate the applicability of the pre-treated (torrefaction, ash removal technology) EFB to pulverized coal boiler. In all blending cases, char reactivity improved as the blending ratio increases (10, 20, and 30%), especially torrefied EFB blended at 30%. Also, unburned carbon decreased as the blending ratio increases in all types of EFB. NOx emission showed the increase and decrease characteristics according to the content of fuel-N of raw EFB and torrefied EFB. But the amount of NOx emission at ashless EFB blends is greater than that of Suek despite of lower fuel-N. It indicated that co-firing effect of using the pretreatment biomass fuel is relatively better than those of the untreated biomass fuel about char reactivity and emission characteristics.
In China, energy and environmental problems are becoming serious owing to rapid economic development. Coal is the most problematic energy source because it causes indoor and outdoor air pollution, acid rain, and global warming. One type of clean coal technology that has been developed is the coal-biomass briquette (or bio-briquette, BB) technique. BBs, which are produced from pulverized coal, biomass (typically, agricultural waste), and a sulfur fixation agent (slaked lime, $Ca(OH)_2$) under high pressure without any binder, have a high sulfur-fixation effect. In addition, BB combustion ash, that is, the waste material, can be used as a neutralization agent for acidic soil because of its high alkalinity, which originates from the added slaked lime. In this study, we evaluated the suitability of alternative biomass sources, namely, aquatic plants, as a BB constituent from the perspective of their use as a source of energy. We selected three types of aquatic plants for use in BB preparation and compared the fuel, handling, and environmental characteristics of the new BBs with those of conventional BBs. Our results showed that air-dried aquatic plants had a higher calorific value, which was in proportion to their carbon content, than agricultural waste biomass; the compressive strength of the new BBs, which depends on the lignin content of the biomass, was high enough to bear long-range intracontinental transport in China; and the new BBs had the same emission control capacity as the conventional BBs.
BACKGROUND: The number of biomass power plants is increasing around the world and the amount of wastes from power plants is expected to increase. But the bottom ash (BA) is not recycled and has been dumped in landfill. This study was conducted to find out functional groups of BA and adsorption rate of heavy metals on BA. METHODS AND RESULTS: The BA was dried in oven at 105℃ for 24 hours, and characterized by analyzing the chemistry, functional group, and surface area. The adsorption rates of heavy metals on BA were evaluated by different concentration, time, and pH. As a result, the adsorption amount of the heavy metals was high in the order of Zn> Cu> Cd> Ni and the removal rates of Zn, Cu, Cd, and Ni by BA was 49.75, 30.20, 32.46, and 36.10%, respectively. Also, the maximum adsorption capacity of BA was different by the heavy metal in the environmental conditions, and it was suggested that the isotherms for Zn, Ni, Cd, and Cu were adequate to Langmuir model. CONCLUSION(S): It is suggested that it would be effective to remove heavy metals in aqueous solution by using BA from biomass power plants in South Korea.
Ash remaining after coal combustion was used as a catalyst support for tar steam reforming with various proportions of $Al_2O_3$ added for higher reforming efficiency. At a constant Ni content of 12 wt%, a coal ash and $Al_2O_3$ were mixed at a ratio of 5:5, 7:3, 9:1. As a result, the catalytic activity for toluene steam reforming was improved by adding $Al_2O_3$ at $500-600^{\circ}C$. The catalysts with ratio 7:3 and 5:5 reached toluene conversion of 100% above $700^{\circ}C$. When comparing the catalysts in which the coal ash and $Al_2O_3$ mixed at a ratio of 5:5 and 7:3 with the Ni/Al catalyst, it was concluded that this coal ash catalyst has efficient catalytic performance.
Understanding of chemical composition and energy contents in tree is important to develope strategies of renewable energy policy to cope with climate change. Residual biomass as renewable energy source was evaluated and focused on the bark-containing branches. Chemical analysis studies were conducted for different part of yellow poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera), which were partitioned to inner bark, outer bark, small branches, medium branches, big branches and trunk. The variations in hydrophobic extractives, hydrophilic extractives, lignin, carbohydrate compositions, energy contents (higher heating value) and the ash content were determined. The inner and outer bark had higher ash content, hydrophobic and hydrophilic extractives content, and higher energy content than those of tree trunk. Polysaccharides content in inner and outer bark was quite lower than those of stem or branches. Based on the energy content of residual biomass, replacement of fossil fuel and greenhouse gas emission abatement were calculated.
In biomass gasification, efficiency of energy quantification is a difficult part without finishing the process. In this article, a radial basis function neural network (RBFN) is proposed to predict biomass efficiency before gasification. RBFN will be compared with a principal component regression (PCR) and a multilayer perceptron neural network (MLPN). Due to the high dimensionality of data, principal component transform is first used in PCR and afterwards, ordinary regression is applied to selected principal components for modeling. Multilayer perceptron neural network (MLPN) is also used without any preprocessing. For this research, 3 wood samples and 3 other feedstock are used and they are near infrared (NIR) spectrum data with high-dimensionality. Ash and char are used as response variables. The comparison results of two responses will be shown.
Biomass, carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus standing crops of bethic community were estimated at the trophic levels in the intertidal zone of Kum river estuary. Annual mean biomass of zoobenthos was 130.5g/$m^2$, body fraction 26.7g/$m^2$ and shell fraction 103.8 g/$m^3$. Biomass estimated as ash-free dry weight was total 28.9g/$m^2$, body fraction 20.2g/$m^2$ and shell fraction 8.7g/$m^2$ Carbon standing crops of zoobenthos were 15.9gC/$m^2$, in which organic carbon content was 7.0gC/$m^2$ and carbonate carbon was 8.9gC/$m^2$. Production efficiency by carbon standing crops from sediment to herbivores and carnivores and 10.6% and 16.0% in phosphorus, respectively. Annual primary production of benthic algae was crudely estimated to 329g.dw/$m^2$/yr by using the biomass and turn-over rate of benthic algae.
The use of low cost and ecofriendly adsorbent has been investigated as an alternative to the current expensive method of removing dyes from wastewater. Cow dung cakes were collected from the nearby village which was burnt in a muffle furnace at $500^{\circ}C$ to obtain the required ash. This paper deals with the removal of Reactive Blue 221, Acidoll Yellow 2GNL and Olive BGL which are mainly used in textile industry, from aqueous solution by cow dung ash without any pretreatment. The adsorption was achieved under different pH, adsorbate concentration and the applicability of Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms were examined.
