Root nodule biomass, and seedling biomass and growth were examined for 2-year-old Robinia pseudoacacia and Amorpha fruticosa seedlings following fertilization treatments. Organic fertilizer, solid combination fertilizer, and organic fertilizer plus solid combination fertilizer were used for the study. Root nodule biomass (g/plant) ranged from 3.00 to 7.06 for R. pseudoacacia and varied from 1.52 to 2.32 for A. fruticosa, respectively. In all treatments, root nodule biomass of R. pseudoacacia was significantly higher than those of A. fruticosa. Fertilization significantly increased root nodule biomass for only R. pseudoacacia, however, there were no significant differences in root nodule biomass among fertilization treatments. Root nodule biomass was not influenced by soil nitrogen (N) and phosphorous (P) concentrations following fertilization treatments. Seedling biomass (components and total) and growth (diameter at root collar and height) were strongly correlated with root nodule biomass for the two N fixing tree species.
Statistical analysis between operating parameters and effluent quality on advanced wastewater treatment plant was performed. Through factor analysis four factors derived varimax rotation were selected each plant. Four components explained $80\%,\;82\%$ of the total variance of the process, respectively. The components on MLE plant were identified in the following order: 1) HRT increase and BOD load decrease by influent decrease, 2) Biomass, 3) SVI increase by internal return increase, 4) Microbial diversity by SRT increase. On $A_2O$ plant, we defined them as follows: factor 1, high MLSS by return rate increase, HRT increase by influent decrease; factor 2, biomass; factor 3, BOD of influent; factor 4 was relate to DO.
Background: Although phytoremediation is a promising method for pollution control, biomass produced by the remediation process must be managed; otherwise, it will eventually return to the environment and cause secondary pollution. Therefore, research and policy development for the post-remediation management of biomass are both required. Results: While there are many published studies of phytoremediation, research into post-remediation management is very limited. Therefore, a new study using biomass as a co-composting material was conducted and showed positive effects on soil characteristics and plant performance. However, despite its potential, research and policies to promote this form of management are still lacking. Conclusions: We suggest public engagement in support of "Post-phytoremediation management" legislation that stipulates management of biomass after phytoremediation, promotes recycling of biomass with known environmental risks, and includes specific policies developed for managers. Further research to support and inform such policies and laws is also required.
It is known that phytoplankton biomass or turbidity are lower in waters with submerged macrophytes than those without submerged plants at a given nutrient level. We hypothesize that presence of submerged macrophytes would lower phytoplankton biomass below levels expected by total phosphorus levels through various mechanisms and that phytoplankton biomass would decrease more as the biomass increase of the submerged macrophytes. To find submerged macrophytes effectively lowering phytoplankton growth, we conducted spatial field surveys at 21 water bodies and a temporal monitoring at Seung-un 1 Reservoir, Anmyyeondo Island. We measured chlorophyll ${\alpha}$ concentrations and total phosphorus (TP) concentrations from waters in patches of submerged macrophytes with measurements of submerged plant biomass. Majority of our sites with submerged macrophytes showed much less chlorophyll a concentrations than the predicted ones from literature. Among submerged macrophytes studied, Myriophyllum spicatum and Hydrilla verticillata showed patterns of lowering chlorophyll ${\alpha}/TP$ ratios with increase of their biomass in both spatial and temporal surveys.
Utilization of biomass as a substitute fuel for conventional energy systems have been grown larger everyday in the world. In particular, co-firing of biomass in a large coal power plant are common in Korea after the introduction of RPS since 2012, and the application of biomass-derived fuel is now spreading to district heating and power, industrial energy supply, and transportation sectors. For biomass to energy, appropriate conversion process is needed to satisfy the fuel requirements of a specific energy system. In this study, various kinds of thermochemical conversion technologies will be presented for renewable fuel productions from biomass.
The fermentation process and subsequent processing determine the efficacy of a bioherbicide propagule. Large batches of biomass of the mycoherbicide agent for white clover, Sclerotium sp.(BWC98-105) was produced in simple liquid fermentator in 5 gallons vessels(Model No. 8087, Dabo Inc., Korea) with oxygen supply(DPH16000, FineTech Inc., Korea) simulating industrial conditions by utilizing commercially available, inexpensive ingredients (10 % rice bran), The maximum biomass yield of Sclerotium sp.(BWC98-105) was obtained after 5 days of air pumped incubation at room temperature condition(22-28$^{\circ}C$). By using this simple facility, it could get fragmented or proliferated greatly and attained maximum mycelia biomass. The biomass of mycoherbicide agent consisted of hyphae devoid of spores. Biomass mycelia of the fungus 99% survival at room temperature after 2 me. A thorough understanding of the effects of fermentation and formulation on viability and virulence is required to guide these processes. After an economical yield level of bioherbicide propagule has been achieved in a fermentation process, formulation becomes a critical factor which influences product efficacy. Because the fermentation must be stopped at a point when virulence/viability are optimum, the live bioherbicide propagule must be stabilized, formulated, and packaged.
Tropical dry forests are one of the most threatened, widely distributed ecosystems in tropics and estimation of forest biomass is a crucial component of global carbon emission estimation. Therefore, the present study was aimed to quantify the biomass and carbon storage in trees on large scale (10, 1 ha plots) in the dry mixed evergreen forest of Javadhu forest of Eastern Ghats. Biomass of adult (≥10 cm DBH) trees was estimated by non-harvest methods. The total biomass of trees in this tropical dry mixed evergreen forest was ranged from 160.02 to 250.8 Mg/ha, with a mean of 202.04±24.64 Mg/ha. Among the 62 tree species enumerated, Memecylon umbellatum accumulated greater biomass and carbon stocks (24.29%) more than the other species in the 10 ha study plots. ANOVA revealed that there existed a significant variation in the total biomass and carbon stock among the three plant types (Evergreen, brevi-deciduous and deciduous (F (2, 17)=15.343, p<0.001). Basal area and density was significant positively correlated with aboveground biomass (R2 0.980; 0.680) while species richness exhibited negative correlation with above ground biomass (R2 0.167). Finding of present study may be interpreted as most of the trees in this forest are yet to be matured and there is a net addition to standing biomass leading to carbon storage.
This study investigated the reference case in the UK where legality and sustainability were systematically established for forest biomass represented by wood pellets. The UK is the country that best utilizes the trade value of wood pellets based on sustainability, with bioenergy accounting for 31% of total renewable energy production. The UK imported wood pellet, estimated 8,697 thousand tons in 2019. The UK government has continuously improved the renewable generation policy system to ensure the sustainability of wood pellets. The weighted average greenhouse gas emissions of a UK biomass power plant that received a Renewable Obligation Certificate (ROC) in 2018-19 was 26.71 gCO2e/MJ. These power plants are expected to meet the upper limit of 72.2 gCO2e/MJ by 2025. To issue an ROC, the biomass power plant must demonstrate that 70% of its total biofuel usage is sustainable. The UK uses the Sustainable Biomass Program (SBP) certification system, which is gradually expanding to other European countries, to prove the sustainability of biomass energy fuels. Global wood pellet production with SBP certification in 2019 was 10.5 Mt. This trend has significant implications for introducing additional sustainability into the wood pellet policy of South Korea.
This study was carried out to develop a new sweet sorghum for biomass by using mutagen, gamma-ray. Seeds treated were gained from National Genetic Resource Center, RDA, and these seeds were irradiated with gamma-ray (400Gy) at KAERI. CNUS-M113 and CNUS-M134 among 169 collected accessions were evaluated a promising line for biomass due to increasing of fresh and dry weight. In addition, this line was high in stem height, number of tiller and fresh weight per plant than check, Hwang-gum chal sorghum. Accordingly, this line demanded for leading variety the production test and cultivation adaptability in future years.
