  • In this study, we performed a mesocosm experiment to estimate the mass balance of Nutrients (DIN, DIP) in a phragmites australis community. We developed 4 mesocosm tanks which is available to circulate seawater with adjustable tide levels and flooding times. Each of the mesocosm tanks were filled with phragmites australis and sediment from Jinudo in Nakdong Estuary. We investigated DIN, DIP concentrations in three layers (seawater-phragmites australis-sediment) to estimate the mass balance of Nutrients and biomass. Growth rates were also investigated. The results can be summarized as follows. 1) In spring, rhizome biomass was higher than that of aerial stem by about 6.3~9.7%. In summer, aerial stem biomass was higher than that of rhizome about 19.2~21.2 %. 2) Th Growth rate of phragmites in Mesocosm Tank A was faster than in Mesocosm Tank D by about 2 to 3 times for aerial stem and rhizome. 3) The Concentration of nutrients (DIN, DIP) in each mesocosm Tank showed 2~3 % variance in spring and summer. 4) The biomass in each mesocosm varied by about 23 % which was higher than the concentration variance for each mesocosm tanks.

  • MAPP a computer program provides an estimate of the annual production of macroalgae. The calculation of the annual production is based on the Photosynthesis-Irradiance relationship under different temperature conditions and annual changes of algal biomass. The production in a given time was obtained from the multiplication of biomass by the production rate measured by in situ experiments. The annual production, $P_{yr}$, is calculated from $P_{yr}{\;}={\;}{\int}B_t{\cdot}P_r{\;}dt$, where, $P_t$ = f(T,L)and T, L = f(t). The program is written in Pascal language to facilitate the usage with personal computers. The data of the photosynthetic rates and biomass of Sargassum confusum measured at Ohori, on the east coast of Korea, was used for an example.

  • A study on the estimation of the stock density and biomass of Perinereis aibuhitensis in the tidal zone in Sosan, Chungchongnam-do, Korea was carried out from June to July 1988. A preliminary survey was conducted to determine the distribution pattern of the species and the optimum sample size for setting up the sampling design. The stock densities of the species by stratum and by subarea were estimated using the stratified random sampling method, based upon the results of preliminary survey. The differences in density between strata as well as among subareas were tested to decide whether they can be combined together for estimating the overall stock biomass or not. The results of the survey showed that p. aibuhitensis were randomly distributed(Poisson distribution) and the number of quadrats which satisfies a reasonable level of precision was determined to be five by stratum. The densities between strata were not significantly different, while densities among subareas were different. Subarea C showed the highest density with the mean of $53.9g/m^2$ and followed by subarea B. The density of subarea A was the lowest with the mean of $18.2g/m^2$. The overall mean density from the study area was $32.4g/m^2$ with the coefficient of variance(CV) of $6.8\%$ The overall stock biomass was estimated to be 147.5mt in this area.

  • The eco-hydrodynamic model was used to estimate the primary productivity of the oyster culture grounds in Kamak Bay. It is composed of the three-dimensional hydrodynamic model for the simulation of water flow and ecosystem model for the simulation of phytoplankton. The ecosystem model was applied to simulate phytoplankton biomass during culturing period in condition of no oyster culture grounds. The field surveys were conducted from May, 1994 to March, 1995 in Kamak bay. The results showed the concentration of chlorophyll $\alpha$ to be $1.00\~23.28\;{\mu}g/l$ in the surface layer, $1.27\~29.97\;{\mu}g/l$ in the middle layer and $1.23\~23.08\;{\mu}g/l$ the bottom layer. In monthly variations of chlorophyll $\alpha$ concentration, very high concentration were found in July, 1994 and very low concentrations in December, 1994. As the results of three-dimensional hydrodynamic simulation, the computed tidal currents ave mainly toward the inner part of bay through Yeosu Harbor and the southern mouth of a bay during the flood tide. The computed residual currents were dominated southward in Yeosu Harbor and eastward in the mouth of bay and also showed strong clockwise water circulation at the mouth of bay. The pattern between the simulated and observed tidal ellipses at three stations was very similar. The mean relative errors of all levels between the simulated and observed phytoplankton biomass at 14 stations in Kamak Bay were $13.81\%,\;9.31\%\;and\;17.84\%$, respectively. The results of phytoplankton biomass simulation showed that the biomass increased from June to September and rapidly decreased to December and then slowly increased to March. Primary productivity was estimated in the range of $0.99\~10.20gC/m^2/d$ with the average value of $4.43gC/m^2/d$ in condition of no oyster culture grounds. Primary productivity was rapidly increased from lune to August and rapidly decreased to December and then slowly increased from January to March in Kamak Bay.

  • To replace the imported biomass and to effectively cope with growing RPS(Renewable Portfolio Standard) in power sector, the domestic forest biomass resources for wood pellets were estimated from the preceding research and annual growth rate of forest trees in this study. Assuming that 20% of the by-product from forest trees processing were used as raw material for wood pellet and the wood pellet production capacity was based on the average value derived from the above two methods, unused by-product and residues generated 1.99million tons in 2016, 2.28million tons in 2020 and 3.08million tons in 2030. If 20% of by-products(pebbles, sawdust, etc.) from roundwood processing were used as raw material for wood pellets, the wood pellet could be produced 2.74million tons/year in 2016, 2.95million tons/year in 2020, 3.98million tons/year in 2030. Therefore, total amounts of wood pellet would be increased to 2.74million tons/year in 2016, 3.14million tons/year in 2020, 4.23million tons/year in 2030 when it considered unused by-product and residues from wood processing as raw materials.

  • The objective of this study was to develop allometric equations for the estimation of crown fuel biomass of Pinus koraiensis in Korea. A total of twenty four representative sample trees were destructively sampled in Gapyeong, Hongcheon, and Jeongseon. Crown fuels were weighed separately for each fuel category by size class and by living and dead. The results of this study showed that the needles contributed the largest biomass (16.6 kg, 34.7%), followed by live branches with size ranging from 2~4 cm (9.0 kg, 18.9%), 1~2 cm (6.6 kg, 13.8%), <0.5 cm (5.1 kg, 10.6%), 0.5~1 cm (4.9 kg, 10.3%), and dead branches (3.2 kg, 6.8%), while the live branches with 4 cm (2.4 kg, 4.9%) as the lowest. The adjusted coefficient of determination values were the highest ($R^2_{adj}=0.6021{\sim}9742$) and standard error of estimate were the lowest (S.E.E.=0.2018~0.7271) in allometric equation $lnWt={\beta}_0+{\beta}_1lnD$. The available fuels that are consumed during crown fires (i.e., needles and twigs with diameter less than 1 cm) comprised 55.6% of the total crown fuel biomass.

  • In order to assess and mitigate climate change, the role of forest biomass as carbon sink has to be understood spatially and quantitatively. Since existing forest statistics can not provide spatial information about forest resources, it is needed to predict spatial distribution of forest biomass under an alternative scheme. This study focuses on developing an upscaling method that expands forest variables from plot to landscape scale to estimate spatially explicit aboveground biomass(AGB). For this, forest stand variables were extracted from National Forest Inventory(NFI) data and used to develop AGB regression models by tree species. Dominant/codominant height and crown density were used as explanatory variables of AGB regression models. Spatial distribution of AGB could be estimated using AGB models, forest type map and the stand height map that was developed by forest type map and height regression models. Finally, it was estimated that total amount of forest AGB in Danyang was 6,606,324 ton. This estimate was within standard error of AGB statistics calculated by sample-based estimator, which was 6,518,178 ton. This AGB upscaling method can provide the means that can easily estimate biomass in large area. But because forest type map used as base map was produced using categorical data, this method has limits to improve a precision of AGB map.
