P450 1A2 is responsible for the metabolism of clinically important drugs and the metabolic activation of environmental chemicals. Genetic variations of P450 1A2 can influence its ability to perform these functions, and thus, this study aimed to characterize the functional significance of three P450 1A2 allelic variants containing nonsynonymous single nucleotide polymorphisms (P450 $1A2^*8$, R456H; $^*15$, P42R; $^*16$, R377Q). Variants containing these SNPs were constructed and the recombinant enzymes were expressed and purified in Escherichia coli. Only the P42R variant displayed the typical CO-binding spectrum indicating a P450 holoenzyme with an expression level of ~ 170 nmol per liter culture, but no P450 spectra were observed for the two other variants. Western blot analysis revealed that the level of expression for the P42R variant was lower than that of the wild type, however the expression of variants R456H and R377Q was not detected. Enzyme kinetic analyses indicated that the P42R mutation in P450 1A2 resulted in significant changes in catalytic activities. The P42R variant displayed an increased catalytic turnover numbers ($k_{cat}$) in both of methoxyresorufin O-demethylation and phenacetin O-deethylation. In the case of phenacetin O-deethylation analysis, the overall catalytic efficiency ($k_{cat}/K_m$) increased up to 2.5 fold with a slight increase of its $K_m$ value. This study indicated that the substitution P42R in the N-terminal proline-rich region of P450 contributed to the improvement of catalytic activity albeit the reduction of P450 structural stability or the decrease of substrate affinity. Characterization of these polymorphisms should be carefully examined in terms of the metabolism of many clinical drugs and environmental chemicals.
Southwest Primorye is located in the southern most part of the Russian Far East. The flora of this area is one of the most thoroughly studied and contains 1,530 species of vascular plants, belonging to 622 genera and 154 families, representing 55.6% of the flora of the Primorsky Territory. The flora native to Southwest Primorye encompasses 1,356 species from 547 genera and 148 families. Adventitious plants are represented by 174 species from 127 genera and 37 families. Among other areas of the Russian Far East, only Southwest Primorye has flora in common with the Korean Peninsula, which contains plant species in the subtropical and tropical latitudes: Mitrasacme indica Wight, Halosciastrum melanotilingia [Boissieu] M. Pimen. et V. Tichomirov, Streptolirion volubile Edgew., Lipocarpha microcephala [R. Br.] Kunth, Pueraria lobata [Willd.] Ohwi, Belamcanda chinensis [L.] DC., Zoysia japonica Steud., Deinostema violacea [Maxim.] Yamazaki and Parthenocissus tricuspidata [Siebold et Zucc.] Planch. Most of the flora is represented by the species restricted to Southwest Primorye (seven endemic species) or the Korean Peninsula (seven hemiendemic species). A total of 50.2% of the 10 largest families are nemoral (preboreal) floras, located in the transitional zone of the boreal and nemoral floras. In terms of the structure of the ranked taxonomic spectrum of the largest families, the flora of Southwest Primorye is more similar to that of Northeast China with influence of the Korean flora.
The response of Spirulina (Arthrospira) platensis to high salt stress was investigated by incubating the cells in light of moderate intensity in the presence of 0.8 M NaCl. NaCl caused a decrease in photosystem II (PSII) mediated oxygen evolution activity and increase in photosystem I (PSI) activity and the amount of P700. Similarly maximal efficiency of PSII (Fv/Fm) and variable fluorescence (Fv/Fo) were also declined in salt-stressed cells. Western blot analysis reveal that the inhibition in PSII activity is due to a 40% loss of a thylakoid membrane protein, known as D1, which is located in PSII reaction center. NaCl treatment of cells also resulted in the alterations of other thylakoid membrane proteins: most prominently, a dramatic diminishment of the 47-kDa chlorophyll protein (CP) and 94-kDa protein, and accumulation of a 17-kDa protein band were observed in SDS-PAGE. The changes in 47-kDa and 94-kDa proteins lead to the decreased energy transfer from light harvesting antenna to PSII, which was accompanied by alterations in the chlorophyll fluorescence emission spectra of whole cells and isolated thylakoids. Therefore we conclude that salt stress has various effects on photosynthetic electron transport activities due to the marked alterations in the composition of thylakoid membrane proteins.
Water-dispersible ZnS:Mn nanocrystals were synthesized by capping the surface of the nanocrystal with O-(2-Aminoethyl)polyethylene glycol (PEG-$NH_2$, Mw = 10,000 g/mol) and O-(2-Carboxyethyl)polyethylene glycol (PEG-COOH, Mw = 10,000 g/mol) molecules. The modified PEG capped ZnS:Mn nanocrystal powders were thoroughly characterized by XRD, HR-TEM, EDXS, ICP-AES and FT-IR spectroscopy. The optical properties were also measured by UV/Vis and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopies. The PL spectra showed broad emission peaks at 600 nm with similar PL efficiencies of 7.68% (ZnS:Mn-PEG-NH2) and 9.18% (ZnS:Mn-PEG-COOH) respectively. The measured average particle sizes for the modified PEG capped ZnS:Mn nanocrystals by HR-TEM images were 5.6 nm (ZnS:Mn-PEG-NH2) and 6.4 nm (ZnS:Mn-PEG-COOH), which were also supported by Debye-Scherrer calculations. In addition, biological toxicity effects of the nanocrystals over the growth of wild type E. coli were investigated. They showed no biological toxicity to E. coli until very high concentration dosage of 1 mg/mL of the both nanocrystal samples.
Photoadaptation of Chlorobium (Cb.) phaeobacteroides was investigated under dim and strong light intensity. Absorption spectra of these whole cellIs were different each other. The Soret band intensity and the Qy bandwidth of BChl e in c디l grown under dim light intensity were smaller and more broadened than those under strong light intensity. From HPLC analysis of the pigments, total carotenoid (Car) / bacterochorolphyll (BChl) e ratio of cell increased wi1h increase of light intensities. But camposition of BChl e hamologs almost unchanged. Cb. phaeobacteroides contains 11 kinds of Car including isorenieratene and beta-isorenieratene as major Car. The campositions of Car were different for cells grown under dim and strong light intensities. In conclusion, Cb. phaeobacteroides changes total amount and canposition of Car to adapt various light intensities, while homolog canposition of BChle unchange.

A cytotoxic compound, 8461 was isolated from the culture of Streptomyces sp. strain MCY846 by its cytotoxicity against gastric cancer cell line SNU-l. The IR, UV and NMR spectra of 8461 were identical to those of elaiophylin. This compound showed moderate cytotoxicity against several cell lines and exerted strong inhibitory effect on the synthesis of nitric oxide in the lipopolysaccharide stimulated-Raw 264.7 cells.
A simple and efficient synthesis of various $\alpha$-aminophosphonates (3a-l) by the reaction of substituted aromatic/heterocyclic aldehydes, 2-amino-6-methoxy-benzothiazole and dibutyl/diphenyl phosphites under microwave irradiation without catalyst was accomplished. The phosphonates were characterized by elemental analysis, IR, $^1H$, $^{13}C$- and $^{31}PNMR$ spectra. They showed promising antimicrobial, anti-oxidant activities depending on the nature of bioactive groups at the $\alpha$-carbon.

The electrical characteristics of biologically active points (BAPs) compared with those of the surrounding human skins are studied. And we confirm that BAPs have lower resistance and higher capacitance than the surrounding skins do. We also find that BAPs have higher characteristic frequency than surrounding skins and the impedance spectra of BAPs sometimes have two semicircles on the complex impedance plane. We propose the skin impedance model that is proper to the BAPs and this circuit describes our experimental results sufficiently well.
Five non-stratified plant communities, Dichanthium-Artemisia-Themeda, Dichanthium- Plectranthes-Themeda, Plectranthes-Carex-Myrine, Heteropogon- Dichanthium-Dodonaea and Artemisia-Cynodon-Ber-beris were recognized in Girbanr hills, District Swat, during autumn, 1992. The indices of similarity showed that the communities were dissimilar. The percentage of leptophyllous and nanophyllous, terophytic and nanophanerophytic species were higher than other groups. These indicate dry and disturben conditions. Due to autumn season most of the species were entering in dormant stage. There was no tree layer on southern slopes while northern slopes had a poor layer of Pinus roxburghii. Deforestation, uprooting, terrace cultivation and overgrazing followed by erosion are the main ecological problems. The presence of isolated trees of Pinus roxburghii and stunted Olea ferruginea indicate that the original vegetation might have been of chirpine or Olea-Pinus type. The area having resource potential can be changed into a forest or rangeland by proper protection and management. Suggestions in favour of improvement are given.

Continuation of a phytochemical study of Cichorium intybus L. (Astraceae) growing in Egypt, resulted in the isolation and identification of a new sesquiterpene lactone 3,4-dihydrolactucin, in addition to the eight known compounds; kaempferol, isoscutellarin, cichoriin, umbelliferone, lupeol, lupeol acetate, ${\beta}-sitosterol$, and ${\beta}-sitosterol-3-O-glucoside$. Chemical structures of the isolated compounds were assigned based on different physical, chemical, and spectroscopic techniques including IR, UV, MS, 1D- and 2D-NMR spectra. Furthermore, the antimicrobial, and spasmogenic activities of some fractions and isolates were also assessed.
