  • A simple cultivation method using Jew's mallow (Corchorus olitorius L.) was examined to evaluate the biological quality of 72 upland soils collected from greenhouses in Korea. Each soil was mixed with 4-fold volume of sterilized basal soil having no indigenous chemical and physical problems to lessen the chemical and physical variations among original sample soils. This study assumes that the biological characteristics of each mixture 2 weeks after treatment reflect those of individual sample soil prior to treatment. Jew's mallow (Corchorus olitorius L.) was cultivated for 4 weeks in a pot filled with 250g of each experimental soil and the biological quality of each soil was estimated by the aboveground plant growth. The results indicated that microbial floral quality was explicitly deteriorated in 18 soils having EC above or equal to $5dS\;m^{-1}$. However, in soils having EC below $5dS\;m^{-1}$, some showed a sign of deterioration, while others did not. As this simple method is a kind of bioassay, it dose not require the measurements of microbial numbers and activities.

  • For the identification of unknown drugs in biological samples, we attempted rapid high performance thin layer chromatographic method which is sensitive and selective chromatographic analysis of high performance thin layer chromatography (HPTLC) with automated TLC sampler and ultra-violet (UV) scanner. We constructed HPTLC database (DB) on two hundred five drugs by using the data of Rf values and UV spectra (scan 200-360 nm) as well as gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) DB on ninety six drugs by using the data of relative retention time (RRT) on lidocain and mass spectra. After extracting drugs in biological sample by solid phase extraction (Clean Screen ZSDAU020), we applied them to HPTLC and GC/MS DB. Drugs, especially extracted from biological samples, showed good matching ratio to HPTLC DB and these drugs were confirmed by GC/MS. In conclusion, this DB system is thought to be very useful method for the screening of unknown drugs in biological samples.

  • The damage caused in the processes and distributions after harvesting the fruits and vegetables is attributed to the mechanical factors such as compressive and impact forces. Compression tests of biological materials provide an objective method for determining the apparent modulus of elasticity and mechanical properties which are significant in quality evaluation and control, and them maximum allowable compressive forces for minimizing mechanical damage. This study was performed to determine the mechanical properties of apple and pear, and to investigate effect of specimen shapes on the mechanical properties of them. A computer program was developed for measuring the mechanical properties and analyzing the data obtained from the measurement. Compression tests on the sample were performed with then replications at each treatment and at 25 mm/min loading rate. Mechanical properties of the apple was generally shown the higher value than those of the pear, and it was though that data obtained form the cylindrical specimen removed from the sample was more reliable than from the specimen cut in half.

  • Genetic Algorithm(GA) is a method of approaching optimization problems by modeling and simulating the biological evolution. GA needs large time-consuming, so ti had better do on a parallel computer architecture. Our proposed system has a VLSI-oriented interconnection network, which is constructed from a viewpoint of fractal geometry, so that self-similarity is considered in its configuration. The approach to Parallel Genetic Algorithm(PGA) on our proposed system is explained, and then, we construct the classifier system such that the set of samples is classified into weveral classes based on the features of each sample. In the process of designing the classifier system, We have applied PGA to the Traveling Salesman Problem and classified the sample set in the Euclidean space into several categories with a measure of the distance.

  • This study investigates the incidence and risk factors of adolescents' unwanted sexual behavior for a sample of 769 adolescent males and females. Seven percent of the sample experienced unwanted sexual behavior. Female adolescents were more likely to be victims of unwanted sexual behavior Adolescents with an unwanted sexual behavior, as compared to those without, were more likely to have experienced pregnancy, to drink alcohol, to be sensitive to romantic circumstances, to love his/her parker, to have fathers with higher education, to have lower family income, to have friends with similar norms and attitudes, to be more experienced sexually, not to have both biological parent, to have parents who did not monitor their behavior closet, to get partner's pressure to get sexually involved, and to have higher devotion level toward parker or their relationship.

  • This paper describes a real time algorithm for blood flow estimation of LDF(laser Doppler flowmeter). Many algorithms for blood flow estimation are using power spectral density of Doppler signal by blood flow. In these research, the fast Fourier transformation is used to estimate power spectral density. This is a block processing procedure rather than real time processing. The algorithm in this paper used parametric spectral estimation. This has real time capability by estimation of AR(autoregressive) parameters sample by sample, and has smoothing power spectrum. Also, the frequency resolution is not limited by number of samples used to estimate AR parameter. Another advantage of this algorithm is that AR model enhance SNR.

  • Rice and fish samples as well as a standard reference kale sample have been analyzed for the mercury content using two independent methods, i.e., one developed previously in this laboratory and the other reported by Sjostrand. The analytical results indicate differences in matrix effects depending on the type of sample, e.g., kale and fish samples show the same matrix effects, whereas rice samples show different effects compared to others.

  • Chromosome analysis is an important and difficult task for clinical diagnosis for mutagen dosimetry, and for biological research. It is expensive, time consuming and imprecise when performed manually. Efforts to automate some or all of the procedures have continued for more than 30 years, with only limited success. An acquiring sample from chromosome group is not solved with automatic method. It is still performed by user. This paper represents the method of an automatic chromosome sample extraction which based on region splitting, and scan converted method.

  • Noninvasive monitoring of total Hemoglobin value is feasible with the use of spectroscopic measurements. As a step toward tile final goal of the development of a noninvasive monitor, the spectra$(400{\sim}800mm)$of EDTA whole blood were obtained along with reference total Hemoglobin values. Under the same condition water spectrum was generated. It was subtracted from each blood sample, and then tile first derivative of each subtracted data was taken by 'approximated first derivative algorithm' with gap (1,6,10,20nm). The correlation was obtained between total Hemoglobin and first valley wavelength of first derivative spectrum (sample number: 93).

  • The electrocatalytic oxidative behavior of an antiarrhythmic drug, procainamide hydrochloride (PAH) at the gold electrode surface has been examined using different voltammetric methods like cyclic, linear-sweep and differential pulse voltammetry. Voltammograms obtained in this study reveal that the electrode exhibit excellent electrocatalytic activity towards oxidation of the drug. The parameters that can affect the peak current at different pH, scan rate and concentration were evaluated. The number of electrons transferred was calculated. The current displayed a wide linear response ranging from 0.5 to $30.0{\mu}M$ with a limit of detection of 56.4 nM. The impact of potential interfering agents was also studied. The electrode displayed wide advantages such as simple sample preparation, appreciable repeatability, reproducibility and also high sensitivity. Furthermore, the feasibility of the proposed method was successfully demonstrated by determining PAH in the spiked human biological sample.
