  • Two cumaceans species, Eocuma amakusense $Gam{\hat{o}}$, 1967 and E. latum Calman, 1907, belonging to the family Bodotriidae are collected from the southern sea in Korea, and are redescribed. At the present, just one species belonging to the genus Eocuma, E. cf. hilgendorfi Marcusen, 1894 has been reported in Korea. Herein we add two Eocuma species to the Korean cumacean fauna and described them with full illustration contained new information of mouthparts. A key to the Korean Eocuma species is also provided.

  • Strains showing antifungal activity against Cryphonectria parasitica were isolated from coast soil of Taean , Korea. Of 152 strains isolated, 6 strains showed antifungal activity in vitro against C. parasitica. Ta24 strain showed highest activity with 1.6 cm clean inhibition zone. For strain identification, the morphological characteristic and 16S rDNA sequences were determined. Ta24 strain showed 99% homology with Streptomyces sampsonii and was identified as Streptomyces sp.

  • Machine learning and data mining have found many applications in biological domains, where we look to build predictive models based on labeled training data. However, in practice, high quality labeled data is scarce, and to label new data incurs high costs. Transfer and multitask learning offer an attractive alternative, by allowing useful knowledge to be extracted and transferred from data in auxiliary domains helps counter the lack of data problem in the target domain. In this article, we survey recent advances in transfer and multitask learning for bioinformatics applications. In particular, we survey several key bioinformatics application areas, including sequence classification, gene expression data analysis, biological network reconstruction and biomedical applications.

  • Metabolomics is the study which detects the changes of metabolites level. Metabolomics is a terminal view of the biological system. The end products of the metabolism, metabolites, reflect the responses to external environment. Therefore metabolomics gives the additional information about understanding the metabolic pathways. These metabolites can be used as biomarkers that indicate the disease or external stresses such as exposure to toxicant. Many kinds of biological samples are used in metabolomics, for example, cell, tissue, and bio fluids. NMR spectroscopy is one of the tools of metabolomics. NMR data are analyzed by multivariate statistical analysis and target profiling technique. Recently, NMR-based metabolomics is a growing field in various studies such as disease diagnosis, forensic science, and toxicity assessment.

  • Extensive research with polarimetry and Mueller matrix has been done for chemical measurements and possible cancer detection. However, the effect of thermally denatured biological tissue on polarization changes is not well known. The purpose of this study is to characterize polarization changes in collagen due to thermal denaturation. The variations in polarized state caused by thermal damage were investigated by obtaining the Mueller matrix elements of collagen sample at multiple thermal damage levels. The changes in birefringence of denatured collagen were also investigated. This information could be used to determine the extent of thermal damage level of clinically heat treated tissues.

  • In this paper, we present the developement of Biofeedback system. Biofeedback is a method for learned control of physiological response of the body. It can be used to control certain biological response that cause health problems. Over the past 2 decades, biofeedback has received much attention from medicine as a cure-all for a variety of disease. It has been heralded as a technique that can provide normalization of disturbed physiology without the need for drugs or surgery and their attendant negative side effects. Biofeedback system has been implemented by using PIC microprocessor. We have displayed 5-channel value on PC and managed patient information by using Delphi.

  • A previous exo-terrestrial life-detecting experiment, which was conducted on Mars, sought to detect the products of glucose metabolism, the most common biological process on Earth (Viking biological experiment). Today, glucose metabolism is not considered the universal process of life survival. As NASA plans to launch an orbiter mission in the near future (2020s, the Clipper) and ultimately conduct a lander mission on Europa, a detection experiment that can give broader information regarding habitability is highly required. In this study, we designed a life-detecting experiment using a more universal feature of life, the amphipathic molecular membrane, theoretically considering the environment of Europa (waterdominant environment). This designed experiment focuses on finding and profiling hydrophobic cellular membrane-like microstructures. Expected results are given by conceptual data analysis with plausible hypothetical samples.

  • The family Psychidae is a small group consisting of 241 genera and 1,350 species in the world. The genus Bacotia, belonging to the family Psychidae, what was established by Tutt based on the type species, Fumea sepium Speyer and Speyer, 1846. In this study, we aimed to record lichen-feeding bagworms in Korea. The genus Bacotia Tutt is reported for the first time from Korea with one newly recorded species, Bacotia sakabei Seino, 1981. All available information, including the collecting localities, host plants, illustrations of adults and genitalia are presented. A DNA barcode for precise identification of the species is also described.

  • When relations improve between North and South Korea, there will be demand for North Korean edible plants because of the low labor cost and similar environmental conditions. However, there is no reliable information about trace elements, metals, and metalloids in edible plants from North Korea. Selenium (Se) and germanium (Ge) have positive effects on basic human health and are therapeutical in diverse illnesses. Metal and metalloid (Cd, Pb) poisoning, on the other hand, can cause many health problems. Plants collected from North Korea had higher selenium content than those from South Korea. Although none of the collected species exceeded the permissible levels of cadmium and lead, their content in plants was significantly higher in North Korea than in South Korea. The high metal contents in plants collected from North Korea may be associated with the soil physicochemical properties as well as the accumulated amounts of elements in the soil.

  • The arctic tundra is an important ecosystem in terms of the organic carbon cycle and climate change, and therefore, detailed analysis of vegetation distribution patterns is required to determine their association. We used grid-sampling method and applied geostatistics to analyze spatial variability and patterns of vegetation within a two-dimensional space, and calculated the Moran's I statistics and semivariance to assess the spatial autocorrelation of vegetation. Spatially autocorrelated vegetation consisted of moss, Eriophorum vaginatum, Betula nana, and Rubus chamaemorus. Interpolation maps and cross-correlograms revealed spatial specificity of Carex aquatilis and a strong negative spatial correlation between E. vaginatum and C. aquatilis. These results suggest differences between the species in water requirements for survival in the arctic tundra. Geostatistical methods could offer valuable information for identifying the vegetation spatial distribution.
