  • Kinematic and kinetic analysis has been performed for Soft Golf swings utilizing realistic three dimensional computer simulations based on three dimensional motion tracking data. Soft Golf is a newly developed recreational sport in South Korea aimed to become a safe and easy-to-learn sport for all ages. The advantage of Soft Golf stems from lighter weight of the club and much larger area of the sweet spot. This paper tries to look into kinematic and kinetic aspects of soft golf swings compared to regular golf swing and find the advantages of lighter Soft Golf clubs. For this purpose, swing motions of older aged participants were captured and kinematic analysis was performed for various kinematic parameters such as club head velocity, joint angular velocity, and joint range of motions as a pilot study. Kinetic analysis was performed by applying kinematic data to computer simulation models constructed from anthropometric database and the measurements from the participants. The simulations were solved using multi-body dynamics solver. Firstly, the kinematic parameters such as joint angles were obtained by solving inverse dynamics problem based on motion tracking data. Secondly, the kinetic parameters such as joint torques were obtained by solving control dynamics problem of making joint torque to follow pre-defined joint angle data. The results showed that mechanical loadings to major joints were reduced with lighter Soft Golf club.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate lower-limb joint torque of the two groups as it changed by somatosensory stimulation during the descent down three stairs of different heights and to describe the difference between the two groups, which are young people group and elderly people group. Subjects of each groups climbed down a stair at four stimulation conditions, which are non-stimulation, tibialis anterior tendon stimulation, achilles tendon stimulation, tibialis anterior - achilles tendon stimulation. Motion capture data were collected using 3D optoelectric motion tracking system that utilizes active infrared LEDs, near infrared sensor and force plate. The obtained motion capture data was used to build 3D computer simulation model. The results show that lower-limb joint torque of the two groups changed with somatosensory stimulation as they descended the stairs and the joint torque of the two groups differed from each other.

  • An inverse dynamic model of lower limbs is presented to calculate joint moments during gait. The model is composed of 4 segments with 3 translational joints and 12 revolute joints. The inverse dynamic method is based on Newton-Euler formalism. Kinematic data are obtained from 3 dimensional trajectories of markers collected by a motion analysis system. External forces applied on the foot are measured synchronously using force plate. The use of developed model makes it possible to calculate joint moments for variation of parameters.

  • Due to the self-diffusion of nuclear spins, the edge of phantoms is enhanced in the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), especially in the case of microscopy [1]. According to several published works, theory has been established that the edge enhancement is caused by the motion narrowing around bounded regions due to diffusions of nuclear spins during data acquisition. It is found, however, that the signal decreases due to the diffusion attenuation and image is distorted as edge of the image is sharpened. In this paper, we wilt investigate this signal loss during data acquisition and its effects on image, i.e., image edge enhancement due to the diffusion phenomenon. This result is new and different from the previously discussed edge enhancement due to the diffusion, namely, by motion narrowing effect or spin bouncing effect at the boundary.

  • In abdominal NMR imaging the respiratory ordering techniques have been successfully used to remove the ghosting artifacts arising from the respiratory motion. In the existing respiratory ordering schemes, however, it is generally accepted that blurring of the moving parts still remains as in the signal averaging technique. A new optimal respiratory ordering scheme which can correct the blurring as well as the ghosting artifacts is theoretically derived through the analysis of the phase encoding directional motion effects in Fourier imaging. The performance of the optimal respiratory ordering scheme is experimentally confirmed together with a suboptimal ordering scheme which is suggested as a compromise for the practicality.

  • In this study, the extractions of formant and articulately motion trajectorles from Korean diphthongs are performed by using the RISL adaptive linear prediction filter. This enables us to extract spectrum transition of speech signal accurately. This study showes that the RISL algorithm is superior to the Levinson algorithm, specially in transition part of speech.

  • In this paper, we describe an effective technique for computing the steady-state motion in a two-dimensional cochlear model. With the cochlear fluid assumed incompressible and invisid, the problem reduces to solving an integral equation for a region with yielding boundary. Using the conformal mapping, Jacobian elliptic function and hyperbolic function, a pair of second-order differential equation is derived. What we will show in this paper is that by appropriately transforming integral equation, the same computation can be performed with comparable accuracy in a short time.

  • This study was conducted to characterize the gait of a person climbing or descending the stairs. Using our motion analysis system (Vicon 370), gait patterns of ten healthy females (18.8 - 19.6 yrs. old) were measured 1) when a subject tip-toed the stairs, 2) when a subject climbs the stairs with the whole foot, and 3) when a subject went down the stair, respectively. The results of each cases were compared with the data for the level walking collected from 21 healthy females in the previous studies. The stairway gait data can be used as a useful reference in the design of artificial limbs for the lower-limb amputee.

  • In this paper, we proposes a bending actuator using shape memory alloy coil-type springs. By the heating of two shape memory alloy coil-type springs sequentially, the bending and stretching motion of the actuator is possible. We measure the bending angle and repeated bending motion with the various currents. Furthermore, we control the bending angle of the 1 directional bending actuator with sensors. The performance of the actuator has been characterized or the possible application for catheter.
