Inhibition of Asexual Speculation and Growth of Aspergillus niger and Aspergillus oryzae by Propylamine

  • Effects of propylamine on conidial head formation and growth of Aspergillus niger and Aspergillus oryzae were analyzed. Propylamine inhibited conidial head formation in these two fungi, and the inhibitory effect of propylamine was not suppressed by the addition of potassium chloride at high concentration, which promotes conidial head formation in A. nidulans and A. oryzae. Propylamine also inhibited the growth of A. niger and A. oryzae by $41\%\;and\;32\%$, respectively, when the concentration of propylamine was $2\%$.

  • Picrorhiza kurrooa Royle. is a well known medicinal plant among the indigenous medical practitioners of India. Present study is the first time to report the activity on the central nervous system. Preliminary study of the hot water extract showed significant depressant activity on the hole board test as evidenced from the ambulation and head dipping scores. The extract showed better activity compared to diazepam on the duration of pentobarbital induced sleeping time.

  • We hypothesized that inflammation affects number and activity of osteoclasts (OCs) via enhancing autophagy. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) induced autophagy, osteoclastogenesis, and cytoplasmic reactive oxygen species (ROS) in bone marrow-derived macrophages that were pre-stimulated with receptor activator of nuclear $factor-{\kappa}B$ ligand. An autophagy inhibitor, 3-methyladenine (3-MA) decreased LPS-induced OC formation and bone resorption, indicating that autophagy is responsible for increasing number and activity of OCs upon LPS stimulus. Knockdown of autophagy-related protein 7 attenuated the effect of LPS on OC-specific genes, supporting a role of LPS as an autophagy inducer in OC. Removal of ROS decreased LPS-induced OC formation as well as autophagy. However, 3-MA did not affect LPS-induced ROS levels, suggesting that ROS act upstream of phosphatidylinositol-4,5-bisphosphate 3-kinase in LPS-induced autophagy. Our results suggest the possible use of autophagy inhibitors targeting OCs to reduce inflammatory bone loss.

  • The pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel diseases is not very well understood; it is currently thought to be caused by the interaction between genetic factors, environmental factors, intestinal microbes, and immune factors. Biological agents such as anti-tumor necrosis factor (anti-TNF) are widely being used as therapeutic agents. Infliximab, a chimeric monoclonal IgG1 antibody against tumor necrosis factor, has been demonstrated to have an effect in the induction and maintenance of remission in Crohn's disease in children. The effects of biological agents, typified by anti-TNFs, in inflammatory bowel disease in children; the recent concern on the administration of biological agents in combination with immunomodulators; and 'Top-down' therapy are some of the topics covered in this review.

  • Biological drinking water treatment is widely used in Europe for the removal of ammonia nitrogen and organics. During the last 16 years, the deterioration of the quality of surface waters used to produce drinking water has resulted in the widespread use of ozone-biological treatment in Korea. This study were conducted to determine the effect of media weight and preozonation on the biodegradability enhancement in biological fluidized bed(BFB) using Han river water. When the carbon weight was increased, $NH_{3}-N$ and DOC removal increased, but turbidity and SS removal decreased. To remove turbidity and SS, the bed depth in 40% expansion rate/total bed depth was very important. Preozonation of raw water was not effective in $NH_{3}-N$, but increased in biodegradable organic fraction about 10-30% with 0.425-0.85 mg $O_{3}/mg$ DOC.

  • Responsiveness of the testis to pregnant mare's serum gonadotropin (PMSG) was studied in immature Nili-Ravi buffalo bulls. Four month old bull calves weighing between 66 to 100 kg raised under uniform condition, were treated with 1000 IU PMSG or vehicle, daily, for six days. PMSG induced an increase in the size of the testis, enlargement of the seminiferous tubules and activation of the spermatogonia. The number of differentiated Leydig cells in the testis of gonadotropin treated animals increased considerably over that of the control testes. A significant increase in plasma testosterone concentrations was observed 24 h following the first injection of PMSG and the levels continued to increase until day 6. In vehicle treated animals plasma testosterone levels remained more or less at pretreatment values. The data suggest that buffalo bull testis is functionally responsive to gonadotropin at an early stage of prepubertal development.

  • Simulations of solutions of flexible polymer molecules during flow in simple or complex confined geometries are performed. Concentrations from ultradilute up to near the overlap concentration are considered. As concentration increases, the hydrodynamic migration effects observed in dilute solution unidirectional flows (Couette flow, Poiseuille flow) become less prominent, virtually vanishing as the overlap concentration is approached. In a grooved channel geometry, the groove is almost completely depleted of polymer chains at high Weissenberg number in the dilute limit, but at finite concentration this depletion effect is dramatically reduced. Only upon inclusion of hydrodynamic interactions can these phenomena be properly captured.
