Proper maintenance of biological components is crucial for longevity and healthy aging. Although the role of homeostatic maintenance systems for DNA and protein in longevity is established, it remains largely unknown for RNA. In our recent work, we show that nonsense-mediated mRNA decay (NMD) promotes longevity in the roundworm C. elegans by enhancing RNA quality control. We find that the activity of NMD decreases during aging, raising the possibility that RNA quality declines in old animals. We then show that key components of NMD complex are required for prolonged lifespan in C. elegans. In addition, animals with reduced insulin/insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) signaling (IIS), a representative longevity model, display increased NMD activity. Thus, up-regulation of NMD appears to play crucial roles in longevity conferred by reduced IIS via enhancing mRNA quality control. As both IIS and NMD pathways are evolutionarily conserved, mammals including humans may be equipped with similar RNA quality control systems to achieve longevity.
Air pressure decay(APD) rate and ultrafiltration rate(UFR) tests were performed on new and saline rinsed dialyzers as well as those roused in patients several times. C-DAK 4000 (Cordis Dow) and CF IS-11 (Baxter Travenol) reused dialyzers obtained from the dialysis clinic were used in the present study. The new dialyzers exhibited a relatively flat APD, whereas saline rinsed and reused dialyzers showed considerable amount of decay. C-DAH dialyzers had a larger APD(11.70$\pm$1.32mmHg/min)compared to CF dialyzers(4.32$\pm$0.55mmHg/min)(p<0.05). However, there was no observable difference in the UFR between the two dialyzers. Neither APD nor UFR showed any significant increase with an increasing number of reuses for up to more than 20reuses. A substantial number of failures observed in APD(larger than 20mmHe/min)on the reused dialyzers(2 out of 40 CP and S out 26 C-DAK) were attributed to the Possible damage on the fibers. The CF 15-11 HFDs which failed APD test did not show changes in the UFR compared to normal dialyzers indicating that APD is a more sensitive test than UFR test to evaluate the integrity of the fibers.
In recent years, the optical properties of multiple-scattering media like tissue have been studied for their potential applications in medicine. In this work the optical properties of multiple scattering media were investigated using the time-resolved reflectance measurement. The reflected light was measured by time-correlated single photon counting system. The transport scattering and absorption coefficient are related to the initial rapid decay and the subsequent decay in reflected light, respectively. Also the optical properties of the samples were measured by conventional method, ie., using continuous wave light. When the distance between the light source and the detector is over 8mm, the optical coefficient can be measured accurately using the suggested method.
The present work presents analysis results of the core design optimizations for an annular, prismatic High Temperature Gas-cooled Reactor (HTGR) with passive decay-heat removal features. Its thermal power is 100 MWt and the operating temperature is 850 ℃ (1123 K). The neutronic calculations are done for the core with heterogeneous distribution of fuel and burnable poison particles (BPPs) to flatten the reactivity swing and power peaking factor (PPF) during the reactor operation as well as for control rod (CR) insertion into the core to restrain a small excess reactivity less than 1$. The next step of the study is done for evaluation of core reactivity coefficient of temperature.
The purpose of this study was to analyze general ingredient of bean cured on the market and to examine its exposure to bacterial contamination. For this study, 17 samples (each 9 samples for general bean curd, soft bean curd, and uncurdled bean curd) were randomly collected from nine areas in Seoul from the beginning of April, 1983 to the beginning of June, 1983. The result of ingredient analysis of moisture, ash, and protein of bean curd was compared with the standard set by the Ministry of Health & Social Affairs. In order to find out exposure of bean curd on the market to bacterial contamination, total biological bacteria and coliform group were examined. Experimental results were shown as follows 1) Results of ingredient analysis of moisture, ash, and protein of general bean curd showed that total samples in both moisture and protein met the standard set by the Ministry of Health & Social Affairs but 44.4% of the samples in ash was below the above standard, indicating average 82.0%, 0.9% and 9.6% in moisture, ash, and protein order. 2) Experimental results of moisture, ash, and protein of soft bean curd demonstrated 90.2%, 0.5% and 4.3% respectively total samples in both moisture and protein satisfied the self-criteria set by the Soft Food Co-operative Association of Seoul City but 11.1% of the samples in ash didn't meet the self-criteria. 3) Total samples of uncurdled bean curd satisfied the self-criteria set by the above association, indicating average 92.0%, 0.4%, and 3.5% in moisture, ash, and protein order. 4) Total biological bacteria and coliform group detected in general bean curd showed that more than 10$^5$/g in total biological bacteria accounted for 88.8% of the samples and that 10$^4$/g or more in coliform group accounted for 77.7% of the samples. The result proves that general bean curd has been exposured to a severe bacterial contamination. 5) Result of total biological bacteria and coliform group detected in such packed bean curd as uncurdled bean curd and soft bean curd showed that 61.6% of the samples exceeded 10$^6$/g in total biological bacteria and 27.7% of the samples exceeded 10$^3$/g in coliform group. 6) According to the change with time and temperatures in total biological bacteria and coliform group of general bean curd, general bean curd began to decay around 72 hours at 4$\circ$C and around 48 hours at 23$\circ$C and around 24 hours at 37$\circ$C and, at that time, total biological bacteria approached 10$^6$/g while coliform group did 10$^6$/g. The result indicates that temperature has a great effect on bacteria counts and decay.
Postharvest decay of onion bulbs was examined by inspecting the commercial packages in the market or in storage. Bulb rot incidence was unexpectedly high, and onion bulbs with 1st quality grade were rotten most severely by 51%, followed by 32% for 2nd and 21% for 3rd grades. This indicates that larger bulbs had higher incidences of bulb rots. Major pathogens associated with basal and neck rots were Fusarium oxysporum and Aspergillus sp. or Botrytis allii, respectively, of which basal rot was most prevalent and damaging during storage. Among the epiphytic microorgani는 from onion plants, several Bacillus and Paenibacillus spp. and previously selected Pseudomonas putida and Trichoderma harzianum had inhibitory efficacy against bulb rot pathogens. Among these B. amyloliquefaciens BL-3, Paenibacillus polymyxa BL-4, and P. putida Cha 94 were highly inhibitory to conidial germination of F. oxysporum and B. allii. P. putida Cha 94, B. amyloliquefaciens BL-3, P. polymyxa BL-4, and T. harzianum TM were applied in the rhizoplane of onion at transplanting. Initially antagonist populations decreased rapidly during the first one month. However, among these antagonists, rhizoplane population densities of BL-3, Cha 94, and TM were consistently high thereafter, maintaining about 10$^4$-10$^{5}$ cells or spores per gram of onion root up to harvest time. The other bacterial antagonist BL-4 survived only for two months. TM was the most effective biocontrol agent against basal rot, with the number of rotten bulbs recorded at 4%, while that of the control was 16%. Cha 94 was effective for the first 20 days, but basal rot increased thereafter and had about the same control efficacy as that of BL-3 and BL-4. When the antagonists were applied to the topping areas of onion bulbs at harvest, TM was the most effective in protecting the stored onion bulbs from neck rotting. The second effective antagonist was BL-3. TM and BL-3 completely suppressed the neck rot in another test, suggesting that biocontrol of postharvest decay of onion using these microorganisms either at the time of transplanting or at harvesting may be promising.

Dadohaehaesang National Park is a well-known habitat for a variety of indigenous animals and plants; however, there are no studies on the diversity of macrofungi. To undertake a basic survey of the macrofungi diversity in an unexploited area, we focused on surveying the macrofungi in Dadohaehaesang National Park, Korea, during 2017 and discovered two unrecorded species belonging to the order Polyporales. The two species were identified as Cinereomyces lindbladii and Steccherinum bourdotii based on a combination of morphological characteristics and sequence analysis of the internal transcribed spacer region. We provide macro- and micro-morphological descriptions for these two unrecorded species in Korea.
In the Republic of Belarus as well as in the world acute problem of protecting forests from diseases and pests. The damage caused by root rot is essential, therefore, the problem of forest protection is an urgent task. The biologics has the greatest prospects in according with traditional methods of struggle. Deep method of cultivation of a mushroom Phlebiopsis gigantea with use of nutrient mediums on the basis of ethanol stillage and its components (fugat) is researched. Feasibility of use stillage as raw materials in production of a biological product for the wood protection against root decay is shown. The effect of different additives (sawdust, fodder yeast) on the accumulation of reactive biological product - oidy has been studed It was determined that the deep cultivation using sawdust of the highest accumulation oidy (1.5 $10^6units/ml$). It was also found that the stillage is the best breeding ground for fungus biomass accumulation (7.9 9.8 g / l) versus fugat (6.0 6.6 g / l). On the basis of research work the technological scheme for production of a biological product were developed. Based on the conducted studies, a technological scheme was proposed for obtaining a biological preparation by deep cultivation of the fungus Phlebiopsis gigantea.
The fungal genus Trametes is globally distributed and comprises various wood-decay species, including the well-known medicinal mushroom Trametes versicolor, a popular remedy in traditional Asian medicine. Trametes species produce antioxidants, which have a wide range of health benefits. The pressent study evaluated seven indigenous Trametes species from Korea, which were cultivated in three different media (dextrose-yeast extract, DY; malt extract-yeast extract, MY; malt extract broth, MEB) and tested for antioxidant activity using the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl and 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) assays. We found that the medium consumption rate did not significantly differ between the media and among the strains (72-76%). However, the T. versicolor strains had a relatively low consumption rate (14-65%). The 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2'-azinobis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonate) (ABTS) tests demonstrated that culture filtrates of T. cf. junipericola, T. orientalis, T. suaveolens, and T. versicolor possessed antioxidant activity against damage from free radicals. In particular, T. cf. junipericola (DY) and T. versicolor (MY) had >80% activity in the DPPH and ABTS assays, compared with that of the positive control (ascorbic acid). Thus, our study identified promising candidates with substantial antioxidant activity among the indigenous strains of Trametes spp. from Korea.
