Supervised residue trials for mandipropamid in Korean cabbage(Brassica campestris L.) were conducted to establish its pre-harvest residue limit (PHRL), a criterion to ensure the safety of the terminal pesticide residue during cabbage production. Tissues of Korean cabbage were collected at 0, 1, 3, 5, 7, and 10 days after mandipropamid application and subjected to residue analysis. The analytical method was validated by recoveries ranging from 88.2-92.2% at two levels (0.4 and $2.0mg{\cdot}kg^{-1}$), and a limit of quantitation (LOQ) of $0.04mg{\cdot}kg^{-1}$. Mandipropamid residues in Korean cabbage gradually decreased over time. The dissipation rate of the residue would be affected by intrinsic degradation of the compound along with dilution resulting from the fast growth of Korean cabbage. The decay pattern was well fitted by simple first-order kinetics. Biological half-lives of mandipropamid in Korean cabbage ranged from 3.9-4.0 days in two field conditions. Calculated by the regression curve of mandipropamid dissipation, the PHRLs of mandipropamid in Korean cabbage were recommended as 11.07-12.19 and $5.76-6.05mg{\cdot}kg^{-1}$ for 10 and 5 days prior to harvest, respectively.

The storage life of satsuma mandarin(Citrus unshiu Marc. var. miyagawa) by the various pretreatment of temperatures; non-treated, room temperature, $10,\;20^{\circ}C$ and $35^{\circ}C$ were investigated. The pretreated citrus fruits were stored at $4^{\circ}C$, 85% relative humidity. Weight loss of citrus fruits by the pretreatment at $35^{\circ}C$ for 24 hrs was the lowest among that of others. Decay ratio of $35^{\circ}C$ pretreated fruits was increased at initial stages of storage, but was maintained low level after that, compared to other treatments. After 115 days storage, firmness of fruits was lowered by the softening, and decayed fruits were occurred increasingly. Ethylene evolution was increased between $55{\sim}65$ days after storage, and the amount was increasing rapidly after 115 days. It seemed to be derived from decayed fruits and physiological activities. $CO_2$ content in fruit was decreased at initial stages of storage, but was increased between $55{\sim}100$ days during storage periods. Acid content, soluble solids, total sugar and vitamin C were reduced gradually during cold storage, but the difference among treatments was not so great. Pretreated fruits at $35^{\circ}C$ for 24 hrs before cold storage was effective on preventing from weight loss and respiration ratio. Optimum storage period of early variety of Satuma mandarin was regarded for 100 days on the basis of appeareance and taste.
In order to retain the freshness of fruits and vegetables and to reduce the rate of disease damage, grafruit seed extract (GPSE), natural microorganism control agent, was applied during the preservation process of fresh fruits and vegetables. GFSE showed an effective inhibitory action against plant putrefactive bacteria and fungi which were involved in the decay of fruits and vegetables. Minimal inhibitory concentrations for GFSE against the microbes were in the range of 50 to 2,000 ppm. Direct observation of microbial cells and spores using electron microscopy showed their function was destroyed by the treatment of the dilute solutions of GFSE. Fresh Welsh onions, onions and red peppers treated with GFSE and stored in polyethylene film (0.1 mm) retained better quality in color and texture than the non-treated control. GFSE was efficient in controlling the germination of potatoes. It was observed that GFSE would reduce disease damages and have bactericidal and fungicidal properties during the storage of such fruits and vegetables as zucchinis, cucumbers, tomatoes and mandarin oranges.
The cultural properties are damaged by various causes according to the characteristics of material, the condition of preservation, and the period of time. Especially, biodeterioration makes lots of damages in organic properties than inorganic ones. The damages of wooden cultural properties by insects usually are caused by the three orders; Isoptera, Coleoptera, and Hymenoptera. As the result of investigation on the state of 141 buildings of wooden cultural properties in 1999, some of them were damaged by many kinds off actors; wasp, powder post beetle, cigarette beetle, termite, decay, and physical cracking. And it was found that the patterns of damages were related to species-specific habits of insects. There are several methods of pest control for the prevention of wooden cultural properties from damages caused by insects. Those are as follows; physical control, chemical control, biological control, and integrated pest management. When insects and fungi were detected at the wooden buildings, the fumigation is best treatment to stop biodeterioration. And then, wood materials also need to be treated with insecticidal and antiseptic chemicals to avoid a reinfestation, because the fumigant is volatile. The six commercial chemicals which are applied to the insecticidal and antiseptic treatment of wooden cultural properties were purchased to test their abilities. According to the comparative results of efficacy of them in laboratory, chemical D showed excellent efficacy in all items, including antiseptic and termiticidal items. The goal of these pest controls is to protect wooden buildings from insects and microorganisms. The most effective method used currently is chemical control(fumigation, insecticidal and anticeptic chemical treatment), but it has to be treated periodically to control pest effectively. Recently environmentally-friendly control methods such as bait system or biological treatments are replacing traditional barrier treatments using large amounts of chemicals. Especially, termite is a social insect which makes a colony. Although a building with fumigation treatment is safe for a while, once attacked building has a risk of damage by reinfestation of termite. Therefore, to control termites from damaged building, the entire colony including reproductives(queen and king) and larvae around buildings must beeliminated. Bait system can be used as a preventive measure in early detection of them through termites colony monitoring and baiting. It would be the most effective for termite control if bait system would be used together with the chemical controls.
Pre-mRNA splicing is a crucial step for the expression of information encoded in eukaryotic genomes. Alternative splicing occurs when splice sites are differentially recognized and more than one transcript and potentially multiple proteins are generated from the same pre-mRNA. The decision on which splice sites are selected under particular cellular conditions is determined by the interaction of proteins, globally designated as splicing factors, that guide spliceosomal components, and thereby the spliceosome, to their respective splice sites. Abiotic stresses such as heat, cold, salt, drought, and hypoxia markedly alter alternative splicing patterns in plants, and these splicing events implement changes in gene expression for adaptive responses to adverse environments. Alteration of the expression or activity of splicing factors results in alternative splicing under cold, heat, salt, or drought conditions, and alternatively spliced isoforms respond distinctly in several aspects such as expression in different tissues or degradation via nonsense-mediated decay. Spliced isoforms may vary in their subcellular localization or have different biological functions under stress conditions. Despite numerous studies, functional analyses of alternative splicing have been limited to particular abiotic stresses; the molecular mechanism of alternative splicing in abiotic stress response remains uncovered which suggests that further studies are needed in this area.

In order to predict the performance of biological wastewater treatment plant, the kinetic parameters and stoichiometric coefficient must be known. The theories and experimental procedures for determining the biological kinetic parameters were discussed in this study. Respirometric analysis in the batch reactor was carried out for the experimental assessment of kinetic parameters. A simple procedure to estimate kinetic parameters of heterotrophs and autotrophs under aerobic condition was presented. The difficulties in the interpretation of COD and VSS measurements encouraged the conversion of respirometric data to growth data. Maximum specific growth rate, yield coefficient, half saturation constant and decay rate of heterotrophic biomass were obtained from OUR(Oxygen Uptake Rate) data. Maximum specific growth rate of autotrophic biomass was obtained from the increase of nitrate concentration. The aim of this paper is to estimate the kinetic parameters of heterotrophic and autotrophic biomass by means of the respirometric analysis of activated sludge behavior in the batch reactors. These procedures may be used for the activated sludge modeling with complex kinetic parameters.

Five varieties of sweetpotatoes recommended in Korea were investigated with respect to the storing capacity, resin content and the possibility of developing sweetpotato chips as a new processed food item. The results are summarized as follows: 1) Two varieties, Suwon No. 147 and Chun-Mi were more resistant to chilling injury and soft-rot decay than other varieties. 2) The contents of resinous and polyphenolic substances were quite different depending upon the variety. 3) Sweetpotato chips of different color were made from different varieties and rapeseed oil was found to be the best as frying oil. 4) Best conditions to prepare sweetpotato chips with fresh color and proper texture were to dip slices of 1-2 mm thickness in 0.25% sodium bisulfite solution at $40^{\circ}C$ for 30-40 minutes and to subject to deep frying in an oil bath at $150-160^{\circ}C$ for 2.5 to 3.5 minutes. 5) Polyethylene-cellophane film as packing material of sweetpotato chips was the film in the moisture proof and film-impact tests.

Apple white rot, caused by Botryosphaeria dothidea, is one of the important diseases in Korea. B. dothidea can cause pre- and postharvest decay on apple fruit as well as canker and dieback of apple trees. In this study, we isolated bacteria from the trunk of apple trees and tested their antagonistic activity against B. dothidea. Five bacterial isolates (23-168, 23-169, 23-170, 23-172, and 23-173) were selected that were most effective at inhibiting the mycelial growth of the pathogens. The isolate 23-172 was identified as Bacillus amyloliquefaciens and four isolates 23-168, 23-169, 23-170, and 23-173 were identified as Bacillus velezensis by RNA polymerase beta subunit (rpoB) and DNA gyraseA subunit (gyrA) gene sequencing. All isolates showed strong antagonistic activity against B. dothidiea as well as Colletotrichum fructicola and Diaporthe eres. All isolates exhibited cellulolytic, proteolytic and phosphate solubilizing activities. In particular, two isolates 23-168, 23-169 were shown to significantly reduce the size of white rot lesions in pretreated apple fruits. These results will provide the basis for the development of a fungicide alternative for the control of white rot of apple.
A population ecological study was carried out to estimate survival and growth rates, biomass, biological production and turnover ratio of cultured sea squirt, Halocynthia roretzi, by growth stages, using data from in situ culture experiment off Hansando in the southern part of Korea from February 1985 to July 1986. The squirt population followed an exponential decay function and the instantaneous coefficient of total mortality (Z) was estimated to be 0.0614 $month^{-1}$(Var (Z) = 0.000126). Growths in total weight and meat weight of squirts were expressed as linear functions during the period of culture experiment. The growth of squirts showed a negative correlation with the water temperature. The mean biomass per string ranged from 2.14 kg for March of the first year to 16.26 kg for March of the next year. The biological production per string was estimated to range from 3.28 kg for the first summer (June - July) to 6.46kg for the first late winter (February-March). The peak of turnover ratio occurred in the late winter (February-March) as 3.013 and the ratios sharply declined thereafter. Based on the results of this study, management implications for culturing sea squirts were also suggested. The optimum harvest time ($t_{mb}$) when the peak biomass in terms of total weight occurred was estimated to be late June of the second year, which corresponded to 16.7 months after the main hanging. However, the time when the peak biomass in terms of meat weight was occurred was early July of the second year. The maximum harvest biomass was 17.4 kg per string in terms of total weight and 6.3 kg per string in terms of meat weight. In conclusion, the process of culture should be conducted on the basis of the knowledge of population ecological theories as shown in this study.
Benzene, one of the aromatic hydrocarbons, can be degraded by physical, chemical and biological processes in aquifers. This study aimed at analyzing separately the three different forms of degradation by performing column tests. Column tests using KCl and benzene as tracers were conducted for four different cases: 1) no hydrogen peroxide and no microorganism, 2) hydrogen peroxide only; 3) microorganism only; 4) hydrogen peroxide and microorganism to investigate the sorption and degradation of benzene. The observed BTCs of KCl and benzene in all cases showed that the arrival times of the peaks of both tracers coincided well but the peak concentration of benzene was much lower than that of KCl. This reveals that a predominant process affecting the transport of benzene in a sandy soil is an irreversible sorption and/or degradation rather than retardation. Decay of benzene through sorption and degradation increased with the addition of hydrogen peroxide and/or microorganism. Dissolved oxygen decreased with the increase of benzene in all cases indicating that degradation of benzene was also influenced by dissolved oxygen. For BTCs with the addition of microorganisms (case 3 and case 4), microorganism showed much lower concentrations compared to the initial levels and an increasing tendency with time although concentrations of benzene returned to zero, indicating a possible retardation of microorganism due to reversible and irreversible sorption to the particle surfaces.
