Nanotechnology, especially vertically grown silicon nanowires, has gotten great attentions in biology due to characteristics of one dimensional nanostructure; controllable synthetic structure such as lengths, diameters, densities. Silicon nanowires are promising materials as nanoelectrodes due to their highly complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) - and bio-compatibility. Silicon nanowires are so intoxicated that are effective for bio molecular delivery and electrical stimulation. Vertical nanowires with integrated Au tips were fabricated for electrical intracellular interfacing with PC-12 cells. We have made synthesized two types of nanowire devices; one is multi-nanowires electrode for bio molecular sensing and electrical stimulation, and the other is single-nanowires electrode respectively. Here, we demonstrate that differentiation of Nerve Growth Factor (NGF) treated PC-12 cells can be promoted depending on different magnitudes of electrical stimulation and density of Si NWs. It was fabricated by both bottom-up and top-down approaches using low pressure chemical vapor deposition (LPCVD) with high vacuuming environment to electrically stimulate PC-12 cells. The effects of electrical stimulation with NGF on the morphological differentiation are observed by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), and it induces neural outgrowth. Moreover, the cell cytosol can be dyed selectively depending on the degree of differentiation along with fluorescence microscopy measurement. Vertically grown silicon nanowires have further expected advantages in case of single nanowire fabrication, and will be able to expand its characteristics to diverse applications.

With increasing satellite-based RS(Remotely Sensed) techniques, RS soil moisture footprints have been providing for various purposes at the spatio-temporal scales in hydrology, agriculture, etc. However, their coarse resolutions still limit the applicability of RS soil moisture to field regions. To overcome these drawbacks, the LDA(Landsat-based Downscaling Algorithm) was developed to downscale RS soil moisture footprints from the coarse- to finer-scales. LDA estimates Landsat-based soil moisture($30m{\times}30m$) values in a spatial domain, and then the weighting values based on the Landsat-based soil moisture estimates were derived at the finer-scale. Then, the coarse-scale RS soil moisture footprints can be downscaled based on the derived weighting values. The LW21(Little Washita) site in Oklahoma(USA) was selected to validate the LDA scheme. In-situ soil moisture data measured at the multiple sampling locations that can reprent the airborne sensing ESTAR(Electronically Scanned Thinned Array Radiometer, $800m{\times}800m$) scale were available at the LW21 site. LDA downscaled the ESTAR soil moisture products, and the downscaled values were validated with the in-situ measurements. The soil moisture values downscaled from ESTAR were identified well with the in-situ measurements, although uncertainties exist. Furthermore, the SMAP(Soil Moisture Active & Passive, $9km{\times}9km$) soil moisture products were downscaled by the LDA. Although the validation works have limitations at the SMAP scale, the downscaled soil moisture values can represent the land surface condition. Thus, the LDA scheme can downscale RS soil moisture products with easy application and be helpful for efficient water management plans in hydrology, agriculture, environment, etc. at field regions.
Purpose: Soil strength has been measured using a cone penetrometer, which is making it difficult to obtain the spatial data required for precision agriculture. Our objectives were to evaluate real-time horizontal soil strength (RHSS) to measure soil strength in real time while moving across the field. Using the RHSS data, the tillage depth was determined, and the power consumption of a tractor and rotavators were compared. Methods: The horizontal soil-strength index (HSSI) obtained by the RHSS was compared with the cone index (CI), which was measured using a cone penetrometer. Comparison analysis in accordance with the measurement depth that increased at 5-cm interval was conducted using kriged maps at six sensing depths. For tillage control and evaluation of the power consumption, the system was installed with a potentiometer for tillage depth, a torque sensor from the rear axle, and a power take-off (PTO) shaft. Results: The HSSI was lower than the CI, but they were the same at 54.81% of the total grids for the 5-cm depth and at 3.85% for the 10-cm depth. In accordance with the recommended tillage map, tillage operations between 0 and 15 cm left 2.3% and 7% residue cover on the soil, and that between 20 and 10 cm covered a wider utilization of 3% and 18.4%, respectively. When the tillage depth was 15 cm, the comparison result of the power requirements between the PTO and rear axle in terms of control performance revealed that the maximum power requirements of the axle and PTO were 44.63 and 23.24 kW, respectively. Conclusions: An HSSI measurement system was evaluated by comparison with the conventional soil strength measurement system (CI) and applied to a tractor to compare the tillage power consumption. Further study is needed on its application to various farm works using a tractor for precision agriculture.

A systematic study of Bloch surface wave (BSW), which is created by guided mode resonance (GMR) of dielectric multilayer structures with a grating profile, is presented to analyze the sensing performance of bio-sensors. The effect of structural parameters on optical behavior is evaluated by using Babinet's principle and modal transmission-line theory. The sensitivity of designed bio-sensors is proportional to the grating constant at wavelength spectrum, and inversely proportional to the normal wave vector of incident electromagnetic wave at angular spectrum. Numerical results for two devices with SiO/SiO2 and TiO2/SiO2 multilayer dielectric stacks are presented, showing that BSW can be exploited for the realization of efficient diffraction-based bio-sensors from infrared to visible-band range.

An analytical model based on a modal transmission-line theory (MTLT) is developed to investigate the optical transmission through metal gratings. This model gives well physical meanings for the transmission as well as for the dispersion relations of the modes responsible for high transmission. These concepts provide accurate information even for real metals used in the visible~near-infrared wavelength range, where surface plasmon polaritons (SPP's) are excited. Furthermore, the dispersion relations allow the nature of the propagation modes to be assessed. The propagation modes are hybrid between Fabry-Pérot like modes and SPP's. It is important to consider different period and aspect ratio of metal gratings in order to determine the nature of the hybrid modes. In this paper, the sensing characteristics and mode propagation phenomena of high-performance plasma bio-sensors that depend on these variables were clearly analyzed.

In service robots, a number of human movements are analyzed using a variety of sensors. Vibration signals from walking movements of a human provide useful information about the distance and the movement direction of the human. In this paper, we measure the intensity of vibrations and detect both human walking pace and direction. In our experiments, vibration signals detected by microphone sensors provide good estimation of the distance and direction of a human movement. This can be applied to HRI (Human-Robot Interaction) technology.

Exact impedance modeling of the electrode/electrolyte interface is important in bio-signal sensing electrode development. Therefore, the investigation of the equivalent circuit models for the interface has been pursued for a long time by several researchers. Previous circuit models fit the experimental results in limited conditions such as frequency range, type of electrode, or electrolyte. This paper describes a new electrical circuit model and its capability of fitting the experimental results. The proposed model consists of three resistors and two constant phase elements. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy was used to characterize the interface for Au, Pt, and stainless steel electrode in 0.9% NaCl solution. Both the proposed model and the previous model were applied to fit the measured impedance results for comparison. The proposed model fits the experimental data more accurately than other models especially at the low frequency range, and it enables us to predict the impedance at very low frequency range, including DC, using the proposed model.
In this paper, a disposable glucose sensor was made of paper. Glucose sensor strip using carbon electrode is appropriate for the low price ones because it requires cheap materials and low cost production. Most of blood glucose sensors were developed with plastics, but it causes pollution problems. Therefore we developed disposable carbon electrode glucose sensor using paper. This sensor consists of upper and bottom plate. On the upper plate, three-dimensional channel are formed through pressing process. The fabricated paper glucose sensor shows relatively short sensing time of about 5seconds, excellent reproducibility ($R^2$=0.9558), and fabrication yield as well.
Many insects such as mosquitoes cause life-threatening diseases such as malaria, yellow fever and West Nile virus. Malaria alone infects 500 million people annually and causes 1-3 million death per year. Volatile insect repellents, which are detected through the sense of smell, have long been used to protect humans against insect pests. Antifeed-ants are non-volatile aversive compounds that are detected through the sense of taste and prevent insects from feeding on plants. The molecular targets and signaling path-ways required for sensing insect repellents and antifeedants are poorly understood. Transient Receptor Potential (TRP) Ca2+-permeable cation channels exist in organisms ranging from C. elegans to D. melanogaster and Homo sapiens. Drosophila has 13 family members, which mainly function in sensory physiology such as vision, thermotaxis and chemotaxis. G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) initiate olfactory signaling cascades in mammals and in nematodes C.elegans. However, the mechanisms of G protein signaling cascades in insect chemosensation are controversial. In this review, I will discuss the putative roles of G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) and Transient Receptor Potential (TRP) channels as targets for insect repellents.

In vivo assay of glucose detection was described using a skin tattoo film electrode (STF), and the probe was made from carbon nano tube paste modification film paper. Here in the square-wave stripping anodic working range obtained of $20-100mgL^{-1}$ within an accumulation time of 0 seconds only in sea water electrolyte solutions of pH 7.0. The relative standard deviations of 50 mg glucose that were observed of 0.14 % (n=12), respectively, using optimum stripping accumulation of 30 sec, the low detection limit (S/N) was pegged at 15.8 mg/L. The developed results can be applied to the detect of in vivo skin sensing in real time. Which confirms the results are usable for in vitro or vivo diagnostic clinical analysis.
