  • In membrane bioreactor (MBR), activated sludge degrade the biological component and membrane process separate this bacterial flocks as well the suspended solids. However, membrane fouling is one of the major issues in MBR. In this review, composite membrane used in MBR to overcome fouling is discussed. It is classified into membrane containing carbon and noncarbon materials. Introducing graphene, graphene oxide (GO) and carbon nanotubes or their modified part into pristine membrane enhance hydrophilicity of the composite membrane. Inorganic materials like silicon dioxide (SiO2) or titanium dioxide (TiO2) are also incorporated for preparing composite membrane to increase its water flux.

  • Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) coating solution containing glutaraldehyde (GA) and maleic anhydride (MA) as crosslinking agents was coated onto hydrolyzed poly acrylonitrile (PAN) hollow fiber membranes. The permselectivities of the resulting composite membranes prepared varying the reaction temperature and the concentration of the crosslinking agents were tested for 90 wt% ethanol aqueous mixtures by the pervaporation technique at $60^{\circ}C$. In general, the flux decreased while the selectivity increased for the increases of the reaction temperature and the crosslinking concentration. In case of GA as a crosslinking, the flux $165g/m^2hr$ and the separation factor 81 were obtained at GA 11 wt% and the reaction temperature $120^{\circ}C$. And for the case of MA, the flux $174g/m^2hr$ and the separation factor 73 were obtained at MA 11 wt% and the reaction temperature $120^{\circ}C$.

  • This paper explain about the development of environmental friendly, low cost and stable supply material i.e., rice husk and shell were used as micro incorporating bio waste filler. Those were processed by ball mill and analyzed through micro observation by FE-SEM, EDS and particle size distribution. The obtained filler was mixed with epoxy resin for the manufacturing of CFRP composite and study tensile properties. In EDS analysis main contents of rice husk and rice husk ash are C, O and Si. When rice husk was burned C and Si ration were increased. Shell powder has C, O and Ca. It caused $CaCO_3$ from shell. Surface weighted mean of rice husk powder is $6.19{\mu}m$ and volume weighted mean is $14.77{\mu}m$. And it has rod type particles which caused hair and husk structure parts. Surface weighted mean of rice husk ash powder is $1.55{\mu}m$ and volume weighted means is $8.20{\mu}m$. Surface weighted mean of shell powder is $2.53{\mu}m$ and volume weighted mean is $5.79{\mu}m$. The tensile decreased with increasing the content of micro filler in CFRP composites. In case of rice husk, the significant decrement of tensile strength was observed. and in case of shell powder, there is no effect of changes take place in tensile strength.

  • To develop chemical and biosensors, this paper studies sensing characteristics of bulk carbon nanotube (CNT) electrodes by means of their electrical impedance properties due to their large surface area and excellence chemical absorptivity. The sensors were fabricated in the form of film and nano web style by using composite process for mass production. The bulk composite electrodes were fabricated with singlewall and multi-wall carbon nanotubes based on host polymers such as Nafion and PAN, using a solution-casting and an electrospinning technique. The resistance and the capacitance of electrodes were measured with LCR meter under the various amounts of buffer solution to study the electrical impedance change properties of them. On the experimental of sensor electrode, impedance characteristics of the composite electrode are affected by its host polymer and nanofiller and its sensing response showed saturated result after applying some amounts of buffer solution for test chemical. Especially, the capacitance values showed drastic changes while the resistance values only changed within few percent range. It is deduced that the ions in the solution penetrated and diffused into the electrodes surface changed the electrical properties of the electrodes much like a doping effect.

  • The Korean Ministry of Environment started controlling indoor air quality (IAQ) in 2004 through the introduction of a law regulating the use of pollutant emitting building materials. The use of materials with formaldehyde emission levels above $1.25 mg/m^2{\cdot}h$ (JIS A 1901, small chamber method) has been prohibited. This level is equivalent to the $E_2$ grade ($>5.0mg/{\ell}$) of the desiccator method (JIS A 1460). However, the $20{\ell}$ small chamber method requires a 7-day test time to obtain the formaldehyde and volatile organic compound (VOC) emission results from solid building interior materials. As a approach to significantly reduce the test time, the field and laboratory emission cell (FLEC) has been proposed in Europe with a total test time less than one hour. This paper assesses the reproducibility of testing formaldehyde and TVOC emissions from wood-based composites such as medium density fiberboard (MDF), laminate flooring, and engineered flooring using three methods: desiccator, perforator and FLEC. According to the desiccator and perforator standards, the formaldehyde emission level of each flooring was ${\le}E_1$ grade. The formaldehyde emission of MDF was $3.48 mg/{\ell}$ by the desiccator method and 8.57 g/100 g by the perforator method. To determine the formaldehyde emission, the peak areas of each wood-based composite were calculated from aldehyde chromatograms obtained using the FLEC method. Formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, propionaldehyde, butyraldehyde and benzaldehyde were detected as aldehyde compounds. The experimental results indicated that MDF emitted chloroform, benzene, trichloroethylene, toluene, ethylbenzene, m,p-xy-lene, styrene, and o-xylene. MDF emitted significantly greater amounts of VOCs than the floorings did.

  • In this study, a revised oil leakage evaluation method for assessing oil leakage stability of asphalt mastics used in upper slabs of below-grade residential parking lots was developed and presented. In order to verify the reliability and reproducibility of leakage results, the parameters the revised evaluation was carried out for three products with actual leakage history, and it was confirmed the leaks could be reproduced whereas the existing methods could not. To quantitatively verify the reproducibility, the filler content of the leaked samples was derived and the maximum filler content was 64% lower than that of the normal sample. The same results was found with the samples from the actual leakage site, thus verifying the reliability of the revised evaluation method.

  • DNA barcoding, an inventory of DNA sequences from a standardized genomic region, provides a bio-barcode for identifying and discovering species. Several recent studies suggest that the sequence diversity in a 648 bp region of the mitochondrial gene for cytochrome c oxidase I (COI) might serve as a DNA barcode for identifying animal species such as North American birds, insects and fishes. The present study tested the effectiveness of a COI barcode in discriminating Korean bird species. We determined the 5' terminus of the COI barcode for 92 species of Korean birds and found that species identification was unambiguous; the genetic differences between closely related species were, on average, 25 times higher than the differences within species. We identified only one misidentified species out of 239 specimens in a genetic resource bank, so confirming the accuracy of species identification in the banking system. We also identified two potential composite species, calling for further investigation using more samples. The finding of large COI sequence differences between species confirms the effectiveness of COI barcodes for identifying Korean bird species. To bring greater reliability to the identification of species, increased intra- and interspecies sampling, as well as supplementation of the mitochondrial barcodes with nuclear ones, is needed.

  • In this study, a polymer/graphene hybrid composite was prepared by a simple roll-method and a simple sensor was produced by a convenient surface engineering procedure. The sensor performance was examined and the effect of graphene content on the sensing behavior was monitored. A polymer (polydimethylsiloxane, PDMS) paste containing graphene powder was prepared by a three-roll apparatus and polymer/graphene hybrid composite was produced by a two-roll technique. The sensing medium, cyclodextrin (CD) was introduced by a convenient bio-conjugation method. The efficacy of surface modification was confirmed by FT-IR spectroscopy and the ohmic relation was observed on composite surfaces. An analyte (e.g., methyl paraben, MePRB) at a 10 nM concnetration could be detected. When the graphene loading was low, the sensor performance was relatively poor. This was attributed to the absence of graphene alignments, which were observed for the composites having a high graphene loading. This indicates that the sensor performance was influenced by physical alignments of the filler. This article can provide important information for future research on developing sensing devices.

  • A sol-gel derived carbon composite electrodes (CCEs) were fabricated by mixing horseradish peroxidase (HRP), sol of tetraethoxysilane (TESO), and graphite powder. The HRP solution was added to the sol solution of TEOS, and then graphite powder was added to this mixture. The resulting carbon ceramic network effectively encapsulated HRP and shows a catalytic reduction starting at -0.2 V for $H_2O_2$. The optimum conditions for $H_2O_2$determination have been characterized with respect to the enzyme loading ratio and pH. The linear range and detection limit of $H_2O_2$ detection were from 0.2 mM to 2.2 mM and 0.035 mM, respectively. The common electroactive interferences such as ascorbic acid, acetaminophene, and uric acid were not affected upon the response to $H_2O_2$ at the HRP biosensor due to low detection potential.
