  • Purpose: Phytosanitary irradiation treatment can effectively control regulated pests while maintaining produce quality. The objective of this study was to establish the best irradiation treatment for mangosteen, a popular tropical fruit, using a Monte Carlo simulation. Methods: Magnetic resonance image (MRI) data were used to generate a 3-D geometry to simulate dose distributions in a mangosteen using a radiation transport code (MCNP5). Microsoft Excel with visual basic application (VBA) was used to divide the image data into seed, flesh, and rind. Radiation energies used for the simulation were 10 MeV (high-energy) and 1.35 MeV (low-energy) for the electron beam, 5 MeV for X-rays, and 1.25 MeV for gamma rays from Co-60. Results: At 5 MeV X-rays and 1.25 MeV gamma rays, all areas (seeds, flesh, and rind) were irradiated ranging from 0.3 ~ 0.7 kGy. The average doses decreased as the number of fruit increased. For a 10 MeV electron beam, the dose distribution was biased: the dose for the rind where the electrons entered was $0.45{\pm}0.03$ kGy and the other side was $0.24 {\pm}0.10$ kGy. Use of an electron kinetic energy absorber improved the dose distribution in mangosteens. For the 1.35 MeV electron beam, the dose was shown only in the rind on the irradiated side; no significant dose was found in the flesh or seeds. One rotation of the fruit while in front of the beam improved the dose distribution around the entire rind. Conclusion: These results are invaluable for determining the ideal irradiation conditions for phytosanitary irradiation treatment of tropical fruit.

  • The present study aimed to investigate the effects of drought stress on the accumulation of glucosinolates (GSLs) in the leaves of Kale cultivated in autumn and spring. HPLC analysis guided to identify seven GSLs including progoitrin, glucoraphanin, sinigrin, gluconapin, glucobrassicin, 4-methoxyglucobrassicin and neoglucobrasscin. Quantification of GSLs revealed that the contents of sigirin was the highest (45%) followed by the level of progoitrin (24%) in terms of total GSLs. The ranges of total GSL contents was 1.16 (84)-15.88 (89 DAS, ${\mu}mol/g$ dry wt. (DW)) in treatment plot and 1.23 (84)-7.05 (74 DAS, ${\mu}mol/g$ dry wt.) in control plot showed the enhancement in the contents of GSLs in treatment than in the control plot. The present results evidenced that the variation of total GSL contents were depending on the harvest period. In 105 DAS, comparatively no differences in the GSL contents on each sample in autumn season, whereas in spring season, although there was decrease in the GSLs tendency from 74 DAS to 84 DAS in both control and treatment plot, the GSL contents of treatment plot was dramatically increased in 89 DAS. In treatment plot, the GSL contents on 89 DAS (1.16) was 15 fold higher to 84 DAS ($15.88{\mu}mol/g$ DW). The variation in the contents of GSL in spring and autumn did not documented significant differences because of their differences in the growth time and cultivation conditions. In conclusion, the GSL contents in kale was likely to be affected by drought stress treatment. Scrutiny and further research for exact relation between drought stress and GSL contents in kale should be needed.

  • This study was carried out to identify the treatment methods for the inhibition of lateral roots and promotion of hypocotyl enlargement using plant growth regulators for the production of high quality soybean sprouts. Inhibition of lateral root formation was not significant from the $CA_3$ and NAA treatments. From the treatment of BAP, lateral roots were not occurred at all, and hypocotyl enlargement was promoted at the low concentration of $10\;mg{\cdot}L^{-1}\;and\;15\;mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$. Promotion of hypocotyl enlargement was higher as the BAP treatment time was shorter. The optimum time of BAP treatment was 6 hours. Occurrence ratio of lateral roots were low and hypocotyl enlargement was promoted from water supply every 24 hours after BAP treatment. In the indole B treatment, lateral roots occurrence was very low with the concentration of 1.1%, which is much lower than the optimum concentration of 4.2%.

  • This study discribes performance of DEFC (Direct Ethanol Fuel Cell) utilized bio-ethanol based on fruit wastes. To produce the bio-ethanol, fruit wastes were treated at temperature $120^{\circ}C$ and 90minutes in acid pre-treatment. After pre-treatment was done, alcohol fermentation process was running. Initial alcohol concentration was 5%. Using the multi coloumn distillation system, more than 95% ethanol was distilled and each component of bio-ethanol was analyzed. In DEFC performance test, it was revealed that cell performance was much higher than that of ethanol. Comparing ethanol with mixed fuel (bio-ethanol (10%) + ethanol (90%)), the performance of ethanol was higher than that of mixed fuel. Even though the bio-ethanol from the fruit wastes is corresponded with transport ethanol standards, it thought that organic matter in bio-ethanol could be negative effect on fuel cell.

  • Lateral facial cleft is a rare congenital craniofacial anomaly. Their incidence is about 1 in 60,000 births and early treatment with closure in layers is important. Surgical treatment must reconstruct an anatomic and functional situation which give a good esthetic result. This study reports two cases of male at 31 months and 9 months suffered from esthetic problems due to lateral displacement of the oral commisure on the right side. Surgical treatment; the mucosa is closed in with a Z-plasty to avoid intraoral band contracture, the orbicularis oris muscle is closed after interfiber reorientation, and the skin is closed with multiple Z-plasty. So we report two cases of unilateral lateral facial cleft and review of etiopathogenesis in children with lateral facial cleft.

  • In our greenhouse experiment, soil heat treatment groups (50, 80, and 121℃) significantly promoted growth and disease suppression of Panax notoginseng in consecutively cultivated soil (CCS) samples (p < 0.01), and 80℃ worked better than 50℃ and 121℃ (p < 0.01). Furthermore, we found that heat treatment at 80℃ changes the microbial diversity in CCS, and the inhibition ratios of culturable microorganisms, such as fungi and actinomycetes, were nearly 100%. However, the heat-tolerant bacterial community was preserved. The 16S rRNA gene and internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequencing analyses indicated that the soil heat treatment had a greater effect on the Chao1 index and Shannon's diversity index of bacteria than fungi, and the relative abundances of Firmicutes and Proteobacteria were significantly higher than without heating (80 and 121℃, p < 0.05). Soil probiotic bacteria, such as Bacillus (67%), Sporosarcina (9%), Paenibacillus (6%), Paenisporosarcina (6%), and Cohnella (4%), remained in the soil after the 80℃ and 121℃ heat treatments. Although steam increased the relative abundances of most of the heat-tolerant microbes before sowing, richness and diversity gradually recovered to the level of CCS, regardless of fungi or bacteria, after replanting. Thus, we added heat-tolerant microbes (such as Bacillus) after steaming, which reduced the relative abundance of pathogens, recruited antagonistic bacteria, and provided a long-term protective effect compared to the steaming and Bacillus alone (p < 0.05). Taken together, the current study provides novel insight into sustainable agriculture in a consecutively cultivated system.

  • This study was carried out to identify the optimum condition for priming, as a series of experiments for the enhancement of germination percentage and germination synchronization in cool-season turfgrass seeds. The optimum priming conditions to maximize the germinability in both Kentucky bluegrass and Tall fescue was a 1 day treatment of 100 mM $K_3PO_4$ at $25^{\circ}C$. The seeds treated with the optimum priming condition enhanced the germinability compared to control, and shortened the time for germination with reduced $T_{50}$ and mean daily germination (MDG). However, as the concentration and treatment period of NaOH or KOH increased, significantly decrease in germination percentage was observed. Germination percentage in Creeping bentgrass and Bentgrass was below 10%, regardless of priming treatment. However, the priming treatment with 200 mM $KNO_3$ for three days improved the germination up to 6%, which was not a statistically significant level. The most effective priming period for Kentucky bluegrass and Tall fescue was one day treatment, but the germinability was suppressed as the treatment period was extended until six days. For priming chemical treatment, germinability was improved with the concentration of 100 mM, while it was reduced at higher concentrations of 200 mM and 300 mM.

  • The surfaces of henequen fibers, which can be obtained from the leaves of agave plants, were treated with two different media, tap water and sodium hydroxide, that underwent both soaking and ultrasonic methods for the fiber surface treatment. Various biocomposites were fabricated with untreated and treated, chopped henequen fibers and polypropylene using a compression molding method. The result is discussed in terms of interfacial shear strength, flexural properties, dynamic mechanical properties, and fracture surface observations of the biocomposites. The soaking (static method) and ultrasonic (dynamic method) treatments with tap water and sodium hydroxide at different concentrations and treatment times significantly influenced the interfacial, flexural and dynamic mechanical properties of henequen/polypropylene biocomposites. The alkali treatment was more effective than the water treatment in improving the interfacial and mechanical properties of randomly oriented, chopped henequen/PP bio-composites. In addition, the application of the ultrasonic method to each treatment was relatively more effective in increasing the properties than the soaking method, depending on the treatment medium and condition. The greatest improvement in the properties studied was achieved by ultrasonic alkalization of natural fibers, which was in agreement with the other results of interfacial shear strength, flexural strength and modulus, storage modulus, and fracture surfaces.

  • This paper investigates the possibility to increase the economic value of the thinned young apple trough fermentation process. It is studies the optimal fermentation condition of thinned young apple by manipulating preparation treatment and sugar content. To do this following steps are done. Firstly, different preparation treatment for thinned young apple such as whole apple, cutting apple, and blending apple were done. The different sugar content such as $24^{\circ}Brix$, $15^{\circ}Brix$ and $4^{\circ}Brix$ was added. Secondly, the sugar contents and pH level were measured during fermentation process. Finally, statistical analysis was used to examine the relation between the preparation treatment, sugar content and pH level during the fermentation process. The experimental result shows that the different preparation treatment influences to the fermentation process. The blending apple treatment gave lower pH level compared to other kind treatments. The sugar content of thinned young apple was decrease during the fermentation process. The statistical analysis shows that the manipulation preparation treatment and sugar content affect the final pH level and whole fermentation process. Experimental result shows that the thinned young apple fermentation could be proposed as new alternative product in the market. The best fermentation process was obtained from blending thinned young apple treatment with $24^{\circ}Brix$.
