Pass-by noises of various trains were recorded by binaural recorder. The measured noises were evaluated using a sound pressure level and psychoacoustic metrics objectively. To analyze a binaural effect on annoyance that can be caused by train noise, auditory experiments were performed. Through the experiments, the annoyance differences between monaural and binaural train noises, the annoyance differences due to measurement angle and the annoyance differences due to kinds of train and measurement distance were determined. A correlation analysis was conducted to determine which index can affect the annoyance more strongly. As the result, a maximum rate of change of sharpness difference between left and right channels was proposed to predict the annoyance.
If the right and left signals of a binaural sound recording are reproduced through loudspeakers instead of a headphone, they are inevitably mixed during their transmission to the ears of the listener. This degrades the desired realism in the sound reproduction system, which is commonly called 'cross-talk.' A 'cross-talk canceler' that filters binaural signals before they are sent to the sound sources is needed to prevent cross-talk. A cross-talk canceler equalizes the resulting sound around the listener's ears as if the original binaural signal sound is reproduced next to the ears of listener. A cross-talk canceler is also a solution to the problem-how binaural sound is distributed to more than 2 channels that drive sound sources. This paper presents an effective way of building a cross-talk canceler in which geometric information, including locations of the listener and multiple loudspeakers, is divided into angular information and distance information. The presented method makes a database in an off-line way using an adaptive filtering technique and Head Related Transfer Functions. Though the database is mainly concerned about the situation where loudspeakers are located on a standard radius from the listener, it can be used for general radius cases after a distance compensation process, which requires a small amount of computation. Issues related to inverting a system to build a cross-talk canceler are discussed and numerical results explaining the preferred configuration of a sound reproduction system for stereo loudspeakers are presented.
Two twin microphones may produce particular patterns of binaural directivity by time delays between the twin microphones. The boundary element method (BEM) was used for the simulation of the sound pressure field around the KEMAR head model in order to quantify the acoustic head effect. The sound pressure onto the microphone was calculated by the BEM to an incident sound pressure. Then a planar directivity pattern was formed by four sound pressure signals from four microphones. The optimal binaural directivity pattern may be achieved by adjusting time delays at each frequency while maintaining the forward beam pattern is relatively bigger than the backward beam pattern. The simulation results were verified by the experimental measurement.

This paper analyzes the limitations of binaural sound that is reproduced with headphones based on Ambisonics for Virtual Reality (VR) audio. VR audio can be provided with binaural sound that compensates head rotation of a listener. Ambisonics is widely used for recording and reproducing ambient sound fields around a listener in VR audio, and the First order Ambisonics (FOA) is still being used for VR audio because of its simplicity. However, the maximum frequencies with this order is too low to perfectly reproduce ear signals, and thus the binaural reproduction has inherent limitations in terms of spectrum and sound localization. This paper investigates these limitations by comparing the signals arrived at ear positions in the reference field and the reproduced field. An incidence wave is defined as a reference field, and reproduced over virtual loudspeakers. Frequency responses, inter-aural level differences, and inter-aural phase differences are compared. The results show, above the maximum cut off frequency in general, that the reproduced levels decrease, and the horizontal localization can be provided only around the forward direction.
The binaural beat is a subjective beating phenomenon due to the frequency difference of sounds heard in both ears, sensed by the human brain. The beating magnitude physically depends on the amplitudes of the two signals with slight different frequencies. Therefore, the binaural beat strength is expected to be affected by the difference in left and right hearing ability. In this study, 34 healthy subjects without hearing loss were chosen. They hear a pure tone sound (450 Hz) at 10 different Sound Pressure Levels (SPLs) (from 50 dB to 27.4 dB) through the one side of ears, while they hear the reference sound (440 Hz, 50 dB) through the other side of ears. Their subjective assessment using a semantic differential method reveals that the binaural beat strength decreases as SPL differences between the two sides of ears increases, if the difference is greater than 2.2 dB. The result suggests that the hearing loss difference between the two sides of ears should be less than 2.2 dB to maximize binaural beating effects.

For Sound source direction and separation method, Frequency Domain Binaural Model(FDBM) shows low computational cost and high performance for sound source separation. This method performs sound source orientation and separation by obtaining the Interaural Phase Difference(IPD) and Interaural Level Difference(ILD) in frequency domain. But the problem of reflection occurs in practical environment. To reduce this reflection, a method to simulate the sound localization of a direct sound, to detect the initial arriving sound, to check the direction of the sound, and to separate the sound is presented. Simulation results show that the direction is estimated to lie close within 10% from the sound source and, in the presence of the reflection, the level of the separation of the sound source is improved by higher Coherence and PESQ(Perceptual Evaluation of Speech Quality) and by lower directional damping than those of the existing FDBM. In case of no reflection, the degree of separation was low.

Measuring noise, sound quality or acoustical comfort presents a difficult task for the acoustic engineer. Sound and noise are ultimately jugded by human beings acting as analysers. Regulations for determining noise levels are based on A-weighted SPL measurement performed with only one microphone. This method of measurement is usually specified when determining whether the ear can be physically damaged. Such a simple measurement procedure is not able to determine annoyance of sound events or sound quality in general. For some years investigations with binaural measurement analysis technique have shown new possibilities for the objective determination of sound quality. By using Artificial Head technology /1/, /2/ in conjunction with psychoacoustic evaluation algorithms - and taking into account binaural signal processing of human hearing, considerable progress regarding the analysis of sounds has been made. Because sound events often arise in a complex way, direct conclusions about components subjectively judged to be annoying with regard to their causes and transmission paths, can be drawn in a limited way only. A new procedure, complementing binaural measurement technology combined with mulit-channel measuements of acceleration sensor signals has been developed. This involves correlating signals influencing sound quality, analyzed by means of human hearing, with signals form different acceleration sensors fixed at different positions of the sound source. Now it is possible to recognize the source and the transmission way of those signals which have an influence on the annoyance of sound.
In this paper, 3D sound rendering using multichannel speakers is studied. Virtual 3D sound technology has mainly been researched with binaural system. The conventional binaural sound systems reproduce the desired sound at two arbitrary points using two speakers in 3DD space. However, it is hard to implement the localization of virtual source at back/front and top/below positions because the HRTF of an individual is unique just like the fingerprint. Most of all, the HRTF is highly sensitive to the elevation change. Multichannel sound systems have mainly been used to reproduce the sound field picked up over a certain volume rather than at specific points. Moreover, multichannel speakers arranged in 3-D space produce a much better performance of ...
