  • Local binary descriptors are well-suited for many real-time and/or large-scale computer vision applications, while their low computational complexity is usually accompanied by the limitation of performance. In this paper, we propose a new optimization framework, RLDB (Robust-LDB), to improve a typical region-based binary descriptor LDB (local difference binary) and maintain its computational simplicity. RLDB extends the multi-feature strategy of LDB and applies a more complete region-comparing configuration. A cascade bit selection method is utilized to select the more representative patterns from massive comparison pairs and an online learning strategy further optimizes descriptor for each specific patch separately. They both incorporate LDP (linear discriminant projections) principle to jointly guarantee the robustness and distinctiveness of the features from various scales. Experimental results demonstrate that this integrated learning framework significantly enhances LDB. The improved descriptor achieves a performance comparable to floating-point descriptors on many benchmarks and retains a high computing speed similar to most binary descriptors, which better satisfies the demands of applications.

  • Recently, researches for methods of generating binary feature descriptors have been actively done. Since matching of binary feature descriptors uses Hamming distance which is based on bit operations, it is much more efficient than that of previous general feature descriptors which uses Euclidean distance based on real number operations. However, since increase in the number of features linearly drops matching speed, in applications such as object tracking where real-time applicability is a must, there has been an increasing demand for methods of further improving the matching speed of binary feature descriptors. In this regard, this paper proposes a method that improves the matching speed greatly while maintaining the matching accuracy by splitting high dimensional binary feature descriptors to several low dimensional ones and sequentially analyzing their partial Hamming distances. To evaluate the efficiency of the proposed method, experiments of comparison with previous matching methods are conducted. In addition, this paper discusses schemes of generating binary feature descriptors for maximizing the performance of the proposed method. Based on the analysis on the performance of several generation schemes, we try to find out the most effective scheme.

  • This paper proposes texture descriptor for texture classification called Local Neighbor Differences (LND). LND is a high discriminating texture descriptor and also robust to illumination changes. The proposed descriptor utilizes the sign of differences between surrounding pixels in a local neighborhood. The differences of those pixels are thresholded to form an 8-bit binary codeword. The decimal values of these 8-bit code words are computed and they are called LND values. A histogram of the resulting LND values is created and used as feature to describe the texture information of an image. Experimental results, with respect to texture classification accuracies using OUTEX_TC_00001 test suite has been performed. The results show that LND outperforms LBP method, with average classification accuracies of 92.3% whereas that of local binary patterns (LBP) is 90.7%.

  • Automatic facial expression recognition has many potential applications in different areas of human computer interaction. However, they are not yet fully realized due to the lack of an effective facial feature descriptor. In this paper, we present a new appearance-based feature descriptor, the local directional pattern (LDP), to represent facial geometry and analyze its performance in expression recognition. An LDP feature is obtained by computing the edge response values in 8 directions at each pixel and encoding them into an 8 bit binary number using the relative strength of these edge responses. The LDP descriptor, a distribution of LDP codes within an image or image patch, is used to describe each expression image. The effectiveness of dimensionality reduction techniques, such as principal component analysis and AdaBoost, is also analyzed in terms of computational cost saving and classification accuracy. Two well-known machine learning methods, template matching and support vector machine, are used for classification using the Cohn-Kanade and Japanese female facial expression databases. Better classification accuracy shows the superiority of LDP descriptor against other appearance-based feature descriptors.

  • This paper proposed a facial expression recognition approach using SIFT feature and SVM classifier. The SIFT was generally employed as feature descriptor at key-points in object recognition fields. However, this paper applied the SIFT descriptor as feature vector for facial expression recognition. In this paper, the facial feature was extracted by applying SIFT descriptor at each sub-block image without key-point detection procedure, and the facial expression recognition was performed using SVM classifier. The performance evaluation was carried out through comparison with binary pattern feature-based approaches such as LBP and LDP, and the CK facial expression database and the JAFFE facial expression database were used in the experiments. From the experimental results, the proposed method using SIFT descriptor showed performance improvements of 6.06% and 3.87% compared to previous approaches for CK database and JAFFE database, respectively.

  • Plant diseases are a significant yield and quality constraint for farmers around the world due to their severe impact on agricultural productivity. Such losses can have a substantial impact on the economy which causes a reduction in farmer's income and higher prices for consumers. Further, it may also result in a severe shortage of food ensuing violent hunger and starvation, especially, in less-developed countries where access to disease prevention methods is limited. This research presents an investigation of Directional Local Quinary Patterns (DLQP) as a feature descriptor for plants leaf disease detection and Support Vector Machine (SVM) as a classifier. The DLQP as a feature descriptor is specifically the first time being used for disease detection in horticulture. DLQP provides directional edge information attending the reference pixel with its neighboring pixel value by involving computation of their grey-level difference based on quinary value (-2, -1, 0, 1, 2) in 0°, 45°, 90°, and 135° directions of selected window of plant leaf image. To assess the robustness of DLQP as a texture descriptor we used a research-oriented Plant Village dataset of Tomato plant (3,900 leaf images) comprising of 6 diseased classes, Potato plant (1,526 leaf images) and Apple plant (2,600 leaf images) comprising of 3 diseased classes. The accuracies of 95.6%, 96.2% and 97.8% for the above-mentioned crops, respectively, were achieved which are higher in comparison with classification on the same dataset using other standard feature descriptors like Local Binary Pattern (LBP) and Local Ternary Patterns (LTP). Further, the effectiveness of the proposed method is proven by comparing it with existing algorithms for plant disease phenotyping.

  • In this paper, we propose a method to search for identical videos. The proposed method is spatio-temporal group feature fingerprinting. Frame of video is extracted from fixed rate method and is partitioned into vertical group and horizontal group. Descriptor is made of each group feature that is extracted from binary fingerprinting. Next, use descriptor of original video to build a two type of fingerprinting database and matching with query video. To efficient and effective video copy detection, method have high robustness, independence, matching speed. In proposed method, group feature have high robustness and independence in variable modification of video. Building a original fingerprinting database is able to fast matching with query video. The proposed method shows performance improvement in variable modifications in comparison to the existing methods. Especially, very singular performance in speed improvement is great advantage of this paper.

  • Content-Based Image Retrieval (CBIR) system plays a vital role to retrieve the relevant images as per the user perception from the huge database is a challenging task. Images are represented is to employ a combination of low-level features as per their visual content to form a feature vector. To reduce the search time of a large database while retrieving images, a novel image retrieval technique based on feature dimensionality reduction is being proposed with the exploit of metaheuristic optimization techniques based on Genetic Algorithm (GA), Extended Binary Cuckoo Search (EBCS) and Whale Optimization Algorithm (WOA). Each image in the database is indexed using a feature vector comprising of fuzzified based color histogram descriptor for color and Median binary pattern were derived in the color space from HSI for texture feature variants respectively. Finally, results are being compared in terms of Precision, Recall, F-measure, Accuracy, and error rate with benchmark classification algorithms (Linear discriminant analysis, CatBoost, Extra Trees, Random Forest, Naive Bayes, light gradient boosting, Extreme gradient boosting, k-NN, and Ridge) to validate the efficiency of the proposed approach. Finally, a ranking of the techniques using TOPSIS has been considered choosing the best feature selection technique based on different model parameters.

  • This paper presents a robust 3D model hashing dependent on key and parameter by using heat kernel signature (HKS), which is special shape feature descriptor, In the proposed hashing, we calculate HKS coefficients of local and global time scales from eigenvalue and eigenvector of Mesh Laplace operator and cluster pairs of HKS coefficients to 2D square cells and calculate feature coefficients by the distance weights of pairs of HKS coefficients on each cell. Then we generate the binary hash through binarizing the intermediate hash that is the combination of the feature coefficients and the random coefficients. In our experiment, we evaluated the robustness against geometrical and topological attacks and the uniqueness of key and model and also evaluated the model space by estimating the attack intensity that can authenticate 3D model. Experimental results verified that the proposed scheme has more the improved performance than the conventional hashing on the robustness, uniqueness, model space.

  • Video images captured by vehicle cameras often contain blurry or dithering frames due to inadvertent motion from bumps in the road or by insufficient illumination during the morning or evening, which greatly reduces the perception of objects expression and recognition from the records. Therefore, a real-time electronic stabilization method to correct fuzzy video from driving recorders has been proposed. In the first stage of feature detection, a coarse-to-fine inspection policy and a scale nonlinear diffusion filter are proposed to provide more accurate keypoints. Second, a new antiblurry binary descriptor and a feature point selection strategy for unintentional estimation are proposed, which brought more discriminative power. In addition, a new evaluation criterion for affine region detectors is presented based on the percentage interval of repeatability. The experiments show that the proposed method exhibits improvement in detecting blurry corner points. Moreover, it improves the performance of the algorithm and guarantees high processing speed at the same time.
