  • Purpose: This bibliometric analysis aimed to provide a comprehensive overview of the characteristics, trends, and level of diagnostic efficacy of studies on cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) published in Imaging Science in Dentistry (ISD) from 2011 to 2022. Materials and Methods: Publications related to CBCT identified in the electronic collection of ISD were selected according to eligibility criteria by 2 independent reviewers who collected data on the characteristics of the articles (year, authors, and country). The type and topic of studies were analyzed using VOSviewer v.1.6.18 (Centre for Science and Technology Studies, Leiden University, Leiden, Netherlands). The research articles were classified according to the hierarchical scale of diagnostic efficacy. Results: Of the 236 articles included, most were from South Korea and Brazil. Bong-Hae Cho and Yun-Hoa Jung were the most prolific authors on the topic of CBCT. The most frequently published types of studies were cross-sectional and laboratory-based. The most popular topics WERE related to the diagnosis of pathologies and/or alterations, as well as anatomical variations. On the diagnostic efficacy scale, most studies were rated level 1 (technical efficacy) or 2 (diagnostic accuracy efficacy). Conclusion: A steady increase was observed in publications related to CBCT, which are of both clinical and academic interest. The trends in these publications were analyzed, revealing that most are cross-sectional studies primarily exploring the capabilities of CBCT in diagnosing pathologies and/or changes in the oral and maxillofacial complex. These studies were typically classified as level 1 or 2 on the diagnostic efficacy scale.

  • This study reviews articles in published in the The Journal of Korean Biblio Society for Library and Information Science (JKBSLIS) over 5 years from 2010 to 2014 for identifying the academic characteristics and the recent research trends of the JKBSLIS. 300 articles of JKBSLIS are analyzed in terms of bibliometric factors, research theme, methodology, author keywords, and intellectual structure comparing with 344 articles of the Journal of Korean Society for Library and Information Science (JKSLIS) and 283 articles of the Journal of Korean Society for Information Management (JKOSIM). In results, there is no differences between JKBSLIS and the other two journals, JKSLIS and JKOSIM regards on bibliometric factors. The domain research areas in the JKBSLIS are 'Information Services', 'Library Management' and 'Reading Education'. It is also found that the most popular methods are 'survey' and 'case study' and that the main research areas in the shown intellectual structure are 'public library & reading', 'academic library & collection management', and 'school library & information literacy education'.

  • Network generation methods to visualize bibliometric data for examining the intellectual structure of knowledge domains are investigated in some detail. Among the four methods investigated in this study, pathfinder network algorithm is the most effective method in representing local details as well as global intellectual structure. The nearest neighbor graph, although never used in bibliometic analysis, also has some advantages such as its simplicity and clustering ability. The effect of input data preparation process on resulting intellectual structures are examined, and concluded that unlike MDS map with clusters, the network structure could be changed significantly by the differences in data matrix preparation process. The network generation methods investigated in this paper could be alternatives to conventional multivariate analysis methods and could facilitate our research on examining intellectual structure of knowledge domains.

  • There are some limitations in the existing bibliometric methods to satisfy the various requests of the interest parties including researchers, managers, policy makers to identify 1) which research group or researcher is the key player, and the overall trends of the particular technological sub-fields, 2) which research groups, institutions or countries mainly use their research outputs, 3) what are the spin-offs from research outputs to some scientific and technological fields, 4) in which levels they are when comparing their quantitative and qualitative research outputs to those of other competitive institutions. It is essential to develop new informetric indicators and methodologies in order to satisfy stakeholder's various demands and to strengthen qualitative analysis in measuring research performance. This study suggested informetric indicators such as article quality index, citation impact index, international cooperation index, excellent article production index and methodologies including citation analysis, text mining.

  • This study explored the research trends on Twitter in Korea by informetric methods. All 539 articles on Twitter published from 2009 to the April of 2014 were obtained from the KCI. Only article titles, abstracts, and keywords by authors were used in analysis. Academic journals in many different disciplines where Twitter articles were produced were analysed by profiling, and then, the subject areas of researches on Twitter were analysed by co-word analysis. The results of this study showed that Twitter-related papers were published in as many as 53 disciplines with journalism, business administration, and computer science to be core fields. It was also found that the core subject areas are political issues and business.

  • Background: To analyze multi-source data including publications and patents, and try to draw the whole landscape of the research and development community in the field of gene therapy for breast cancer. Materials and Methods: Publications and patents were collected from the Web of science and databases of the five major patent offices of the world, respectively. Bibliometric methodologies and technology are used to investigate publications/patents, their contents and relationships. Results: A total of 2,043 items published and 947 patents from 1994 to 2013 including "gene therapy for breast cancer" were retrieved. The top five countries in global publication share were USA, China, Germany, Japan and England. On the other hand, USA, Australia, England, South Korea and Japan were the main producers of patents. The universities and enterprises of USA had the highest amount of publication and patents. Adenovirus- and retrovirus-based gene therapies and small interfering RNA (siRNA) interference therapies were the main topics both in publications and patents. Conclusions: The above results show that global research in the field of gene therapy for breast cancer is increasing and the main participants in this field are USA and Canada in North America, China, Japan and South Korea in Asia, and England, Germany, and Italy in Europe. Also, this article demonstrates the usefulness of bibliometrics to address key evaluation questions and define future areas of research.

  • Purpose: To evaluate the recent incidence and mortality of and scientific research trends in cervical cancer in Mexican females. Materials and Methods: Data between 2000 and 2010 from the Department of Epidemiology of the Ministry of Health, and International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) of World Health Organization were analyzed, and age-standardized rates (ASRs) were calculated. In addition, scientific research data were retrieved from the Web of Science database from 2003 to 2012, using different terms related to cervical cancer. Results: The incidence rate decreased during last five years, while mortality rates showed an annual decrease of 4.93%. A total of 780 articles were retrieved, and the institutions with the majority of publications were National Autonomous University of Mexico (34.87%), Social Security Mexican Institute (16.02%), and National Institute of Cancerology (15%). The main types of research were treatment, diagnosis, and prevention. Conclusions: The above results show that incidence of cervical cancer decreased over time in Mexico during last five years; similarly, the downturn observed in mortality mainly reflects improved survival as a result of earlier diagnosis and cancer treatment. Also, this article demonstrates the usefulness of bibliometrics to address key evaluation questions and to establish priorities, define future areas of research, and develop cervical cancer control strategies in Mexico.

  • Recently there are many bibliometric studies attempting to utilize Pathfinder networks(PFNets) for examining and analyzing the intellectual structure of a scholarly field. Pathfinder network scaling has many advantages over traditional multidimensional scaling, including its ability to represent local details as well as global intellectual structure. However there are some limitations in PFNets including very high time complexity. And Pathfinder network scaling cannot be combined with cluster analysis, which has been combined well with traditional multidimensional scaling method. In this paper, a new method named as Parallel Nearest Neighbor Clustering (PNNC) are proposed for complementing those weak points of PFNets. Comparing the clustering performance with traditional hierarchical agglomerative clustering methods shows that PNNC is not only a complement to PFNets but also a fast and powerful clustering method for organizing informations.
