  • Disagreements between the technical environment and the conventional library catalog have caused a re-clarification of International Cataloguing Principles (ICP). Review is under way to finalize the publication of RDA (Resource Description and Access) in late 2009 by the Joint Steering Committee for Development of RDA. The impending RDA is based on FRBR (Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records) which re-explains the bibliographic universe focused on entities, attributes and relationships between resources, but tries to maintain MARC as an encoding format for RDA. In this study, firstly FRBR, ICP and RDA were analyzed. Secondly, we propose 3 scenarios of RDA implementation: the future cataloging system based on the FRBR Entity, using a semantic web structure, and the scenario using the existing MARC format with some small changes. Finally, by examining response patterns of overseas bibliographic institutions, we present a set of urgent issues for future directions of bibliographic contro in Korea which includes, but not limited to, relationship between RDA/FRBR and KCR (Korean Cataloging Rules), continuation of KORMARC and authority control.

  • This research proposed an approach for interlinking bibliographic data used in the existing multicultural institutions in order to support information services of multicultural institutions. It constructed a set of linkage properties that can link the FRBR-based BIBFRAME structure with the existing metadata standards currently adopted in multicultural institutions, including MODS, EAD, and CDWA. As a result, the descriptive elements for the Work level, Instance level, Item level, statement of responsibility, subjects were established in the BIBFRAME syntax. A total of 19 upper level elements, 18 sub-elements, and 12 linkage properties were proposed for the linking of bibliographic data, so that a bibliographic environment was established that can interconnect heterogeneous metadata adopted depending on the types of collections. Through the proposed structure, it is expected that it can be applied to provide sufficient information services more efficiently by linking the dispersed bibliographic data of multicultural institutions in an integrated way.

  • MARC format for bibliographic data is to make the functions of shared cataloging easier and to provide exhaustivity for storing national bibliographic information, and powerful and flexible structure to communicate with international cataloging information. KORMARC format was developed in 1984 to form the basis for storing bibliographic information in a consistent and non-redundant form, and for sharing that information and manupulating it by computer. MARC format needs evolution to make the format more consistent and more useful, and to support new forms of material and new forms of control. The purpose of this study is to evaluate and discuss the original KORMARC format for monographs developed by the National Central Library in 1984 in order to provide the basis for a new revised format and format integration.

  • Because most of the medical literatures published in Korea are not listed on the foreign famous index or abstracts journals, it is necessary to index and abstract them domestically. Increasing number of medical literatures makes one final to refer to informations needs without nay secondary materials. Recently, any indexes and abstracts of medical literatures are published, but there are no tertiary lists. Because of that fact, it is difficult to know the status quo of the bibliographic works for the medical literatures in Korea. In this research, status quo of indexing of abstracting of articles in domestic medical journals were investigated and systems or contents of the indexing an abstracting in Korea were analyzed to suggest the standard of bibliographic control.

  • FRBR(Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records) that is conceptual model of bibliographic universal is increased its value because of spreading digital libraries. This research investigates application strategies of the FRBR model, For the study 7 foreign application cases are analyzed. Especially focused on the reason of adoption and method of the entities in the first group of the FRBR model. The result of this research could be the basic resources for study and implementation of the FRBR Model.

  • The study attempts to propose a distributed bibliographic information retrieval system using distributed retrieval servers and distributed databases. CORBA and JAVA applications have been employed to solve both the bottleneck and the problems that simultaneous searches in distributed databases cannot deal with under the CGI or JAVA applications. The proposed distributed bibliographic retrieval system using two distributed servers with their distributed databases was successfully experimented. However, it is recommended that both heterogeneous information retrieval systems and databases are included in further studies.

  • Standardization is a prerequisite of quality control in any field. Library field is not an exception. The bibliographic control structures of AACR2R, MARC, DDC, LCC, LCSH, ISBD are highly standardized and dependent on rigorous authority work, so that libraries and bibliographic utilities using these tools could provide effective quality services. In order to emphasize the importance of standardization in the field of bibliographic control structures, this study focuses on inconsistencies in transliterated foreign personal and geographic names in headings, used as the caption of a given class as well as in notes describing what is found in a class or clarifying the notation hierarchy in the 4th edition of KDC. This study also examines Korean transliteration of loan words in the schedule as well as the transliterated entries of the Relative Index.

  • Many factors play a role in designing the interface for bibliographic data entry system in response to the various needs. Among the major variables to be considered are planning, record format screen design, automatic generation of access points, error chocking, download from bibliographic databases, character codes, card catalog production, and use of authority data. This paper described with examples how these design considerations can be implemented in empirical system.
