A Study on fabrication of Bi-2223 HTSC Tapes (고온초전도 선재 제작에 관한 연구)

  • There have been a lot of studies to improve the characteristic of Bi-2223 tape by PIT method which is considered as one of the best way for applying superconductor. These improved characteristic of Bi-2223 tape is able to be acqured by control of mechanical deformation and heat treatment. In this work, we studied HTS tapes with the sheath(Ag and Ag-alloy)of tapes that affect mechenical strength and critical current, with each two kind of purity(99.9% and 99.999%) and with two kind of tapes(single and double concentric). These charateristics affect Jc of tapes seriously that is the most important factor of superconductor tapes.

Uniform deformation and Critical Current properties of 500 m class Bi-2223/Ag HTS tapes (500 m급 Bi-2223/Ag 고온초전도 선재의 균일 가공 및 임계전류 특성)

  • Intermediate annealing was carried out during wire drawing for uniform deformation of 500 m class Bi-2223/Ag HTS tapes. Wire drawing force was measured to evaluate the uniformity of wire deformation along the length. To prevent sausage and filament breakage of wire, drawing stress was controlled below 200 MPa by using intermediate annealing process. Thickness and width of the rolled tapes was measured 0.23 mm and 4.1 mm with low deviation $\pm$ 0.08 mm and $\pm$ 0.09 mm, respectively. The critical current of the 500 m tapes was measured 33.7 A $\pm$ 3.7 A by continuous critical current measurement system.

  • Bi-2223/Ag HTS tapes fabricated by PIT process are used to make the power transmission cable, motor, fault current limiter, transformer etc. But some problems are still remained as like bubbling, sausaging to got the high Jc. In this study. we carried out the experiment to prevent bubbling in the HTS tape. The bubbling mainly occurred when HTS tape was heat-treating. Therefore, additional vacuum annealing at 400 ~ $600^{\circ}C$and slowly ramp-up sintering method were used to decrease the bubbling. slowly ramp-up sintering was more effective to decrease the bubbling than the vacuum annealing, but Jc was also decreased after heat treatment. Optimum ramp-up sintering schedule was searched to get the high critical current and prevent bubbling at same time.

Properties of Bi-2223/Ag HTS tapes prepared using powders of varying lead content (Pb 함량을 달리한 전구체 분말에서의 Bi-2223/Ag 초전도 테이프의 특성 변화)

  • Bi-2223 superconducting wires were fabricated by stacking, drawing process with different precursor powders and different heat-treatment histories. The precursor powders were 2 kinds of Pb content. And a part of the tapes were experienced pre-annealing process which caused tetragonal structure of Bi-2212 phase to orthorhombic structure of it was during drawing process. We confirmed the transformation of Bi-2212 phase from tetragonal structure to orthorhombic structure and reduction of second phases. AC magnetization analysis were performed in order to investigate the fraction of Bi-2223 phase in Bi-2223/Ag HTS tape. The cross sections of 55 filaments and 61 filaments were investigated after rolled in order to understand deformation mechanism of superconducting cores. We could achieve best Ic of 70 A class at the Bi-2223/Ag tape using low Pb content of precursor powder and experienced pre-annealing process. AC magnetization analysis was useful to investigate the fraction of Bi-2223 phase in the Bi-2223/Ag tape.

  • Among the various processing techniques used in HTS wire fabrication, the PIP(Powder In Tube) method is currently one of the most promising for applications on an industrial scale. In this study, we have fabricated Bi-2223/Ag superconducting tapes using the modified PIT process, where several process factors were changed and improved, ie., powder packing, drawing, rolling and heat treatment. We obtained Bi-2223 tape that have high critical current, 46 a at 77.3 K, have high critical current, 46A at 77.3 K, self field although the tape was not pressed but only rolled. The critical current of 100m class long length tape was measured 21.6A at the same criterion. Besides, the critical current of Bi-2223/Ag tape was measured applying magnetic fields with different directions at various temperatures.

  • For electric power applications of Bi-2223/Ag superconducting tapes, a transport characteristic is important issue. A transport characteristic is strongly depends on the magnitude and direction of external time-varying magnetic field. To verify a effect of external magnetic field, we manufactured a prototype magnet and obtained transport characteristics with respect to the magnitude, the direction and the frequency of external magnetic field. The data acquired in this paper will be used as a source for the study of HTS electric power applications which is supposed to carry on.

Analysis on Current Distribution in Bi-2223/Ag Tapes with Applied Alternating Over-critical Current

  • Generally Bi-2223/Ag tapes have a broad S/N transition region and their sheath is a good electric conductor. In this study, the current distribution between superconductor and metal sheath in HTS tapes were investigated. AC with its peak value above 10 times $I_{c}$ was applied to HTS tapes for around 6 cycles and V-I characteristics were measured. Using the resistance of the sheath and V-I curves, the current distribution between superconductor and metal sheath was calculated. When 150 $A_{p}$ was applied, more than 2/3 of the current flows through superconductor. However, in the case of 304 $A_{p}$, most of the applied current came to flow through the metal sheath at the 6th cycle.e.e.e.

  • This paper presents the design and performance results of a pair of 6-kA high-temperature superconducting (HTS)-copper current leads, in which, over a short length at the warm end (e.g.,77K) of each HTS section, comprised of paralleled Bi-2223/Ag-Au tapes, is operated in the current-sharing mode. Because of their reliance on vapor cooling, the leads are applicable only to liquid helium cooled superconducting magnets such as those used in high-energy Physics accelerators and fusion machines. The experimental measurements have demonstrated that key performance data of the new 6-kA HTS-Copper leads agree reasonably well with those expected from design.

  • 1 km length of Bi-2223/Ag superconducting wires were fabricated by stacking, drawing process with advanced heat-treatment schedules. Intermediate annealing was carried out to increase the homogeneity and uniformity of the superconducting filaments embedded in the silver matrix. Phase modification from tetragonal to orthorhombic Bi-2212 by pre heat treatment(PHT) was executed to improve the texture and phase transformation of Bi-2223. Drawing stress was measured to Predict the sausaging and stress limit, Rolling parameters such as thickness, width and winding tension were investigated to roll the tape with uniformity. Critical current of 1 km length of superconducting tapes was measured about 50 A continuously after final sintering.
