Preparation and Characterization of Bi based frit for Ag Electrode in PDP Application (PDP용 Ag전극 페이스트의 Bi계 프릿 제조 및 특성)

  • A new type of Bi based glass frit was developed for Ag paste in PDP applications and its properties are compared with the commercially used Pb based glass frit. After optimization of the properties of Bi based frits for PDP application such as the softening temperature and the coefficient of thermal expansion (C.T.E), the screen printed electrodes prepared with the Bi based fit contained Ag paste were characterized. In $Bi_2O_3-B_2O_3-Al_2O_3$ glass system with the more than 50% of $Bi_2O_3$, the softening temperature, the thermal expansion coefficient and the line resistivity was 400∼$480^{\circ}C$, 7.31∼$10.02\times 10^{-6}/^{\circ}C$> and 4.1∼4.8$\Omega$ respectively. Properties of the Bi based frits are comparable with the Pb based frits. A printability and an uniformity of the Bi based frits were excellent in screen printed Ag eletrode. The Bi based frit system is an excellent candidate material for Pb free and Alkali free frit in PDP applications.

Effect of melting temperature and additives on transparency of Bi based Transparent Dielectric Layer in Plasma Display Panel

  • We report the method of preventing the grey color of Bi based glass frits caused by reduction of $Bi_2O_3$. To prevent reduction of $Bi_2O_3$, we controlled the melting temperature. Low melting temperature reduces the reduction of $Bi_2O_3$ and that makes clarity transparent glass cullets. After firing, glass frits that melted at lower temperature showed better transparency. To prevent the browning, we used some additives like CuO, $CeO_2$, CoO and $TiO_2$. The colors of glass cullets were varied according to additives. After firing, dielectric layer contained additives showed better transparency than the one without additives. In the point of reaction between dielectric layer and Ag electrode, CuO was the most effective additive in preventing the yellowing.

Fabrication of Bi based solder glass (Bi계 저융점 유리의 제조)

  • One of lead free glass, Bi based solder glass is investigated for electronic packaging application. The melting temperature of glass about $550^{\circ}C$ at Bi based glass (70wt% $B_2O_3$ + l5wt%$B_2O_3$ + 8wt% $SiO_2$ + 2wt% $P_2O_5$ + 4wt% $A1_2O_3$ +lwt% ZnO) and varied with $P_2O_5$ content in this system. Crystallized glasses were obtainded after 1hr heat teratment at $450^{\circ}C$ with 10wt% of $P_2O_5$ addition. Much higher melting temperature was observed at $B_2O_3$ rich composition area.

  • Two kind of Ag-pastes were prepared for integrating the bulk Si solar cell. One is the Ag-paste with Pb-based glass frit and the other is that with Bi-based glass frit. The pastes were the mixture of 84 wt% Ag, 2 wt% glass frit, 11 wt% solvent of buthyl cabitol acetate, and 2 wt% additives. After fabricating the Ag-pastes, they was coated on a $SiN_x$/n+/p- stacks of a commercial mono-Si solar cell. The solar cell efficiency was 17.6% in the case of the Pb-based Ag-paste. However that was 16.2% in the solar cell integrated with the Bi-based Ag-paste. The lower performance in Bi-based Ag-paste was caused by the higher series resistance and the lower shunt resistance in comparison with the Pb-based Ag-paste.

On-Glass Vehicle Antennas Using a Multi-Loop Structure (다중 루프 형태의 차량용 글래스 안테나)

  • In this paper, we propose a novel on-glass antenna for FM radio reception in a recreation vehicle(RV). We use a multi-loop structure that takes advantage of a broad matching bandwidth and a high vertical radiation gain by efficiently utilizing a given space of a quarter glass in spite of the simple planar structure. Transparency of the antenna is also improved by adjusting the stripline widths based on the induced current distributions. The proposed antenna is printed on a quarter glass of a commercial vehicle and antenna performances such as the return loss and the gain are measured in a semi-anechoic chamber. The result shows the average gain of -9.67 dBi along the bore-sight direction($\theta=90^{\circ}$, $\phi=270^{\circ}$) in the FM radio band(80$\sim$l10 MHz), which is higher than a commercial monopole typed on-glass antenna($G_{ave}$=-12.49 dBi) and micro-antenna($G_{ave}$=-19.24 dBi) mounted on the roof of the RV.

  • The dependence of electrical characteristics of RuO$_2$-based thick film resistors on the RuO$_2$ contents, glass composition variation and the firing temperatures was measured. The sheet resistance of resistors decreased as the contents of RuO$_2$ increased and at firing temperatures higher than C, the sheet resistance increased as the firing temperature increased. In case of using lead borosilicate glass-containing $Bi_{2}O_{3}$, the sheet resistance decreased as the contents of $Bi_{2}O_{3}$ increased. TCR changes from negative to positive values as RuO$_2$ contents increased and from positive to negative values as the firing temperature increased. TCR increased to positive values as $Bi_{2}O_{3}$ increased in the glass.

  • Abstract: The effect of lead free glass frit compositions on the properties of thick film conductor and resistor pastes were investigated. Two types lead free frits, HBF-A(without $Bi_2O_3$) and HBF-B(with $Bi_2O_3$) were made from $SiO_2$, $B_2O_3$, $Al_2O_3$, CaO, MgO, $Na_2O$, $K_2O$, ZnO, MnO, $ZrO_2$, $Bi_2O_3$. And Ag based conductor pastes and $RuO_2$ based resistor paste were prepared by mixed with these frits and functional phase(Ag and $RuO_2$), and organic vehicle. The properties of thick film conductor and resistor sintered at $850^{\circ}C$ were studied after printing on $Al_2O_3$ substrate. The morphology of the sintered films surface were SEM and EDS were carried out to analysis the chemical composition on resistor surface and state of Ru atom in frit matrix.

Dispersion Behavior of Transparent Dielectric Glass Frits in the Multi-Solvent and Ammonium-Type Dispersant System (다성분 용매와 암모늄계 분산제가 적용된 투명 유전체 프릿트 슬립의 분산거동)

  • Dispersion behavior of the slurries consisted of Pb or Bi-based glass frits, which are used for the fabrication of green sheet as PDP front panel transparent dielectric, was examined in non-aqueous solvent system. Measurements of sedimentation height and viscosity were conducted to determine proper dispersion condition in the various solvent and dispersant system. Azotropic compound and ethyl acetate were used as the solvent and ammonium-type dispersant was applied to the slurries. All slurries were dispersed well in azotropic solvent system involving 20$\sim$50 vol% ethyl acetate at 2$\sim$3 wt% dispersant content. Especially, dispersion behavior was notably improved in the addition of ethyl acetate in the Bi-based frit slurry.

  • Ceramic green sheets consisting Bi-based glass frit were fabricated for an application to PDP transparent dielectric front panel. The dispersion condition of the slurry for tape casting was pre-examined, and two kinds of hinder and plasticizer were used in the non-aqueous slurry system. In the fabrication process for the frit film, the properties such as dry and firing shrinkage, elongation, and transmittance were examined at the condition of various mixing ratio of plasticizers. In the mixing ratio of polyethylene glycol to dibutyl phthalate of 3:5wt%, a good adhesion, elongation and transmittance were observed at the firing temperature of $580^{\circ}C$. The photograph for the cross section of the interface was also showed a dense microstructure.

  • We have fabricated three-dimensional magnetophotonic crystals based on $\alpha$-$SiO_2$ opal films. Opal thin films grown on glass substrates were filled with bismuth substituted iron garnet (Bi:YIG). Scanning electron microscopy data, optical and magnetic properties of the synthesized samples confirm the presence of the Bi:YIG contentin the opal lattice. It is shown that the samples exhibit the (111) stop band, and transmissivity of the threedimensional magnetophotonic crystals is defined by both the film lattice and the Bi:YIG content.
