Because existing reactant coolant system (RCS) leakage detection mechanisms are insensitive to small leaks, a real-time, direct detection system with a detection threshold below 0.5 gpm·hr-1 was studied. A beta-ray detection system using a silicon detector with good energy resolution for beta rays and a low gamma-ray response was proposed. The detection performance in the leakage condition was evaluated through experiments and simulations. The concentration of 16N in the coolant corresponding to a coolant leakage of 0.5 gpm was calculated using the analytic method and ORIGEN-ARP. Based on the concentration of 16N and the measurement of the silicon detector with 90Sr/90Y, the beta-ray count rate was estimated using MCNPX. To evaluate the effect of gamma rays inside the containment building, the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) was calculated. To evaluate the count rate ratio, the radiation field inside the containment building was simulated using MCNPX, and response evaluation experiments were performed using beta and gamma rays on the silicon detector. The expected beta-ray count rate at 0.5 gpm leakage was 7.26 × 105 counts/sec, and the signal-to-background count rate ratio exceeded 88 for a transport time of 10 s, demonstrating its suitability for operation inside a reactor containment building.
Radiation monitoring is one of the most important process in all places where radioactive material is used including hospital. In this preliminary study, we made GAS electron multiplier (GEM) detector and acquired relative efficiencies in order to see if GEM detector can be useful in radiation monitoring system. The relative efficiency was acquired by using the ratio of GEM detector efficiency to CdTe detector efficiency. The relative efficiency of 72% and 4% was acquired for beta-ray and gamma-ray respectively.

A fiber-optic beta/gamma dual detector system with two types of sensing probes was fabricated to detect the beta- and gamma-rays simultaneously. As scintillators of the sensing probe type 1, two different inorganic scintillators, $CaF_2(Eu)$ and LYSO(Ce) crystals, were used to obtain the each scintillating efficiency with respect to beta-and gamma-rays and the inherent energy spectra of radioactive isotopes. In the case of the sensing probe type 2, which is composed of two identical inorganic scintillators and a beta shielding material based on the lead, it could discriminate beta- and gamma-rays using a subtraction method. In conclusion, we demonstrated that the proposed fiber-optic beta/gamma dual detector could measure and discriminate beta- and gamma-rays using both energy spectroscopy and subtraction method.

A small radiation detection system is necessary for the direct characterization of alpha/beta-ray contamination inside pipes generated during the decommission of a nuclear facility. In this work, the new type phoswich detector consisting of the ZnS(Ag) and plastic scintillator for ${\alpha}/{\beta}$ simultaneous counting was designed as part of a development of a equipment capable of monitoring radiological contamination inside pipes. The optimum counting conditions in dimensions of scintillator and a detection system were experimentally confirmed and a performance of alpha/beta-ray discrimination was evaluated. As a result, optimum conditions of a detector suitable for monitoring radiological contamination inside pipes and a feasibility of application to pipe-inside were confirmed.

The new type phoswich detector consisting of the ZnS(Ag) and plastic scintillator for alpha/beta-ray simultaneous counting was developed for monitoring radiological contamination inside pipes. The detection performance was estimated using the PSD (pulse shape discrimination) method as a function of distance between the scintillator and radioactive source. The attenuation of particles traveling through a thin film for preventing the detector from being contaminated was experimentally estimated. It is concluded from our investigation that the phoswich detector developed can provide a sufficient alpha/beta-ray discrimination. The application of a thin film for preventing the detector from being contaminated was proven to be feasible.
Intact measurement of leaf water content was attempted using the transmission of beta radiation. Prior to the experiments, two tested plants, rice and soybean, were grown in 1/5000a wagner pot. The moisure ratio of plant leaves were measured with the beta radiation transmission method using a G-M detector and $^{99}$ Tc as the beta ray sou-rce. Beta radiation transmission showed a tendancy to increase with the passage of time after leaf cutting. However, it showed a tendancy to decrease with water supply for the lack of water. A positive correlation was found between the leaf water content and beta radiation transmission. The mutiple regression analysis about leaf water content was obtained that the coefficient of partial regression for beta radiation transmission was much higher(rice; -0.863, soybean; -0.904) than that for specific leaf area(rice; 0.007, soybean: 0.004).

In this study, detectors characteristics for simultaneous counting of alpha and beta ray in a pipe were estimated. The detector were composed of thin ZnS(Ag) scintillator and plastic detector. The scintillator for counting alpha particles has been applied a polymer composite sheet, having a double layer structure of an inorganic scintillator ZnS(Ag) layer adhered onto a polymer sub-layer. The other for counting beta particles used a commercially available plastic scintillator. It was confirmed that the detectors were suitable for counting the in-pipe contamination.
The ${\gamma}$-ray concentration and gross-${\beta}$ activity by age group were measured in the teeth of males and females of the domestic residents. They were divided into 7 age groups from 10s to the age of 70s. The gross-${\beta}$ activity concentration was measured by using the Tennelec XLB measuring instrument filled with P10 gas (argon 90%, methane 10%). The ${\gamma}$-ray was measured through the ${\gamma}$-ray spectroscopic analytical method by using the high purity germanium (HPGe) radiation detector. The range of gross-${\beta}$ activity concentration was measured 0.089 to 0.32 Bq/kg in females and 0.13 to 0.26 Bq/kg in males. From the ${\gamma}$-ray spectroscopic analysis of the teeth, the natural radioactive isotopes of $^{40}K$, $^{208}Tl$, $^{228}Ac$ and $^{234}Th$ were detected and their measured ${\gamma}$-ray activity concentrations were found to be 20.7, 21.9, 3.88 and 5.24 Bq/kg, respectively.

The energy response of HPGe detector for low energy Photons was determined by using three Monte Carlo codes. MCNP4A. EGS4, and CYLTRAN in ITS3. In this study. bare HPGe detector$(100 mm^2{\times}10mm)$ was used and a pencil beam was incident perpendicularly on the center of the detector surface. The photopeak efficiency, $K_{\alpha}$ and $K_{\beta}$ escape fractions were calculated as a function of incident X-ray energies ranging from 12 to 60 keV in 2-keV increments. Since the Compton. elastic. ana penetration fraction were negligible in this energy range. they were ignored in the calculation. Although MCNP. EGS, and CYLTRAN codes calculated slightly different energy response of HPGe detector for low energy Photons, it appears that the three Monte Carlo codes can Predict the low energy Photon scattering Processes accurately. The MCNP results, which are generally known as to be less accurate at low energy ranges than the EGS and ITS results. are comparable to the results of EGS and ITS and are applicable to the calculation of the low energy response data of a detector.

Dual scintillator for simultaneous alpha- and beta-ray counting used by detection materials of a surface contamination monitor was developed. In this study, preparation method was not a heat melting method but a solvent method, by which the counting material was manufactured by dissolving the polymer materials with solvent. It was simplified the preparation process. Plastic scintillator for beta-ray counting was prepared by solidifying the casting solution mixed with organic scintillator, polymer, and solvent. ZnS(Ag) scintillator layer was prepared by screen printing the paste solution mixed with ZnS(Ag), paste, and solvent onto the plastic layer. The good counting ability for alpha- and beta-ray using the ZnS(Ag)/plastic dual scintillator prepared and possibility for the counting material of surface contamination monitor was confirmed.
