  • The use of nanotechnology materials and applications in the construction industry should be considered for enhancing material properties. However, the nonlinear buckling of an embedded straight concrete columns reinforced with silicon dioxide ($SiO_2$) nanoparticles is investigated in the present study. The column is simulated mathematically with Euler-Bernoulli and Timoshenko beam models. Agglomeration effects and the characteristics of the equivalent composite are determined using Mori-Tanaka approach. The foundation around the column is simulated with spring and shear layer. The governing equations are derived using energy method and Hamilton's principal. Differential quadrature method (DQM) is used in order to obtain the buckling load of structure. The influences of volume percent of $SiO_2$ nanoparticles, geometrical parameters and agglomeration on the buckling of column are investigated. Numerical results indicate that considering agglomeration effects leads to decrease in buckling load of structure.

  • This paper presents a Level III damage evaluation methodology, which simultaneously, identifies the location, the extent, and the severity of stiffness damage in deep beams. Deep beams are structural elements with relatively high aspect (depth-to-length) ratios whose response are no longer based on the simplified Euler-Bernoulli theory. The proposed methodology is developed on the bases of the force-displacement relations of the Timoshenko beam theory and the concept of invariant stress resultants, which states that the net internal force existing at any cross-section of the beam is not affected by the inflicted damage, provided that the external loadings in the undamaged and damaged beams are identical. Irrespective of the aspect ratios, local changes in both the flexural and the shear stiffnesses of beam-type structures may be detected using the approach presented in this paper.

  • The nonlinear differential equations of motion of a fluid conveying curved pipe are derived by use of Hamiltonian approach. The extensible dynamics of curled pipe is based on the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory. Some significant differences between linear and nonlinear equations and the dynamic characteristics are discussed. Generally, it can be shown that the natural frequencies in curved pipes are changed with flow velocity. Linearized natural frequencies of nonlinear equations are slightly different from those of linear equations.

  • Noises from the large scale marine propeller are calculated numerically on non-cavitation condition. The hydrodynamic analysis are carried out by potential based panel method with time marching free wake approach. The distribution of hyrodynamic loads on the propeller surface and noise signals are obtained using the unsteady Bernoulli's equation and the Farasssat formula respectively. It turns out that the noise signal shows strong peak at the blade passage frequency. Noise signals and directivity patterns for both the thickness and the loading noise are compared with each other. The directivity pattern for the loading noise shows minor lobe at the backward side of the rotating disc plane.

  • There are different kinds of aircrafts, such as conventional airplane, rotorcraft, fighter, and unmanned aerial vehicle. Their shape and feature are dependent upon their assigned mission. One of the fundamental analyses during the design of the aircraft is the structural analysis. The structural analysis becomes more complicated and needs more computations because of the on-going complex aircrafts' structure. In order for efficiency in the structural analysis, a simplified approach, such as equivalent beam or plate model, is preferred. However, it is not clear which analysis will be appropriate to analyze the realistic configuration, i.e., an equivalent beam or plate analysis for an aircraft wing. It is necessary to assess the boundary between the one-dimensional beam analysis and the two-dimensional plate theory for an accurate structural analysis. Thus, in this paper, the static structural analysis results obtained by EDISON solvers were compared with the three-dimesional results obtained from MSC NASTRAN. Before that, EDISON program was verified by comparing the results with those from MSC NASTRAN program and analytic solution.

  • An iterative modal analysis approach is developed to determine the effect of transverse open cracks on the dynamic behavior of simply supported pipe conveying fluid subject to the moving mass. The equation of motion is derived by using Lagrange's equation. The influences of the velocity of moving mass and the velocity of fluid flow and a crack have been studied on the dynamic behavior of a simply supported pipe system by numerical method. The presence of crack results in higher deflections of pipe. The crack section is represented by a local flexibility matrix connecting two undamaged beam segments i.e. the crack is modelled as a rotational spring. Totally, as the velocity of fluid flow and the crack severity are increased, the mid-span deflection of simply supported pipe conveying fluid is increased. The time which produce the maximum dynamic deflection of the simply supported pipe is delayed according to the increment of the crack severity.

  • The development of a finite element model for the geometric and material nonlinear analysis of bonded prestressed concrete continuous beams is presented. The nonlinear geometric effect is introduced by the coupling of axial and flexural fields. A layered approach is applied so as to consider different material properties across the depth of a cross section. The proposed method of analysis is formulated based on the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory. According to the total Lagrangian description, the constructed stiffness matrix consists of three components, namely, the material stiffness matrix reflecting the nonlinear material effect, the geometric stiffness matrix reflecting the nonlinear geometric effect and the large displacement stiffness matrix reflecting the large displacement effect. The analysis is capable of predicting the nonlinear behaviour of bonded prestressed concrete continuous beams over the entire loading stage up to failure. Some numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the validity and applicability of the proposed model.

  • This research deals with the wave dispersion analysis of functionally graded double-layered nanobeam systems (FG-DNBSs) considering the piezoelectric effect based on nonlocal strain gradient theory. The nanobeam is modeled via Euler-Bernoulli beam theory. Material properties are considered to change gradually along the nanobeams' thickness on the basis of the rule of mixture. By implementing a Hamiltonian approach, the Euler-Lagrange equations of piezoelectric FG-DNBSs are obtained. Furthermore, applying an analytical solution, the dispersion relations of smart FG-DNBSs are derived by solving an eigenvalue problem. The effects of various parameters such as nonlocality, length scale parameter, interlayer stiffness, applied electric voltage, relative motions and gradient index on the wave dispersion characteristics of nanoscale beam have been investigated. Also, validity of reported results is proven in the framework of a diagram showing the convergence of this model's curve with that of a previous published attempt.

  • In this work, a model of a functionally graded (FG) nanotube conveying fluid embedded in an elastic medium is developed based on the nonlocal strain gradient theory (NSGT) in conjunction with Euler-Bernoulli beam theory (EBT). The main objective of this research is to investigate the nonlinear vibration and stability analysis of fluid-conveying nanotubes. The governing equations of motion are derived by means of Hamiltonian principle. The analytical expressions of nonlinear frequencies and critical flow velocities for two different types of boundary conditions including pinned-pinned (P-P) and clamped-clamped (C-C) conditions are obtained by employing Galerkin method as well as Hamiltonian Approach (HA). Comparison of the obtained results with the published works show the acceptable accuracy of the current solutions. The effects of the power-law index, the nonlocal and material length scale parameters and the elastic medium on the stability and nonlinear responses of FG nanotubes are thoroughly investigated and discussed.

  • The main objective of the present paper is to investigate the nonlinear vibration of buckled beams fixed at both ends and made of Aluminium allay (Al-alloy) reinforced with randomly dispersed Single Walled Carbon Nanotube (SWNT). The Mori-Tanak (M-T) micromechanical approach is selected to predict the homogenized material properties of the beams. The differential equation of motion governing the nonlinear behavior of the Euler-Bernoulli homogeneous beam is solved using an analytical method. The influences of diverse parameters including axial load, vibration amplitude, SWNT volume fraction, SWNT aspect ratio and beam slenderness ratio on the nonlinear frequency are studied.
