  • From the lees of bokbunja wine (LBW) made from Rubus coreanus Miquel, we have identified six compounds (1: trans-4-hydroxycinnamic acid; 2: trans-4-hydroxy-3-methoxycinnamic acid; 3: 3,4-dihydroxycinnamic acid; 4: 4-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzoic acid; 5: 3,5-dimethoxy-4-hydroxybenzoic acid; and 6: 3,5-dimethoxy-4-hydroxycinnamic acid (sinapic acid)) through silica gel chromatography and UHPLC-MS. The compounds 1-6 showed strong anticoagulation and platelet aggregation inhibitory activities without hemolytic effect against human red blood cells. To date, this is the first report of the in vitro anti-thrombosis activity of sinapic acid. Our results suggest that different cinnamic and benzoic acid derivatives are closely linked to the anti-thrombosis activity of LBW, and sinapic acid could be developed as a promising anti-thrombosis agent.

  • The electrical conductivity of the complexes of $Co^{2+}$, $Ni^{2+}$ and $Cu^{2+}$ with o-aminobenzoic acid hydrazide was measured between 300 and 500 K. It was observed that the conductivity is dependent upon both the cations and anions of the reacted salts. The prepared complexes exhibit typical semiconducting behaviour.

  • Aldehyde reductase was purified to electrophoretic homogeneity from Saccharomyces cerevisiae, and then enzymatic reduction of substituted carbonyl compounds was carried out by using the purified aldehyde reductase as a biocatalyst. Under preparative scale reaction renditions, the enzymatic reduction proceeded in high chemical yield with excellent chemoselectivity. The enzymatic reduction product was identified by TLC, GC, Mass, NMR and FT-IR. Benzoic acid, an inhibitor of aldehyde reductase, also potently inhibited the reduction of substituded carbonyl compounds. This enzyme exhibited a broad substrate specificity , and can utilize both NADH and NADPH as cofactors. The enzyme was strongly inhibited by benzoic acid and quercetin. The apparent Km for 4-cyanobenzaldehyde and 3-nitrobenzamide were 4.894 mM and 0.305 mM, respectively.

  • PMMA was grafted on MWCNT surface in order to prepare conducting film composed of 6FDAbased polyimide/MWCNT. The electrical conductivity of 6FDA-based polyimide/PMMA-g-MWCNT was investigated as a function of PMMA-g-MWCNT content. Dispersion of MWCNT in 6FDA-based polyimide composite film was better than the pristine MWCNT due to the interaction force between PMMA and 6FDA-based polyimide. Electrical conductivity was interpreted by percolation threshold theory. As a result, 6FDA-6FpDA/PMMA-g-MWCNT which have high critical exponents and low critical concentration showed better dispersion than polyimide composite material that contains DABA(diamino benzoic acid).

  • The needles of torreya(Torreya nucifera S. et Z) were collected, extracted with acetone-$H_2O$(7:3, v/v), fractionated with hexane, chloroform and ethylacetate, and freeze dried to give some dark brown powder. The ethylacetate soluble mixture was chromatographed on a Sephadex LH-20 column using a series of aqueous methanol and ethanol-hexane mixture as eluents. Most of the needle extractives were flavan and its methyl ether compounds such as (+)-catechin, (-)-epicatechin, (+)-gallocatechin, (-)-epigallocatechin, 3'-O-methyl-(+)-catechin and 3'-O-methyl-(-)-epicatechin including protocatechuic acid, one of benzoic acids. $^1H$- and $^{13}C$-NMR, NOE and CI-MS analyses were performed to elucidate the structures of the isolated compounds.

  • Retention behavior of benzoic acid and its derivatives on XAD-2 in the alcoholic aqueous solution was investigated and separation was attempted. Retention was affected by the concentration and kinds of added organic solvents, the pH of the aqueous solution, the added $R_4N^+$ and the position and kinds of functional group in the sample molecules. Retention of sample acids in acidic conditions was due to mainly molecular adsorption on nonpolar XAD-2 surface and that in basic conditions was due to mainly ion-pair model. In these bases a mixed sample was separated in EtOH 20% aqueous solution at pH 8.50.

  • The binding of two cephalosporins, cephalothin and cefazoline to human serum albumin(HSA) was studied by difference spectrophotometry using a spectrophotometric probe, 2-(4'-hydroxybenzeneazo) benzoic acid. The probe is strong visible absorbing material which interacts with serum albumin to give characteristic spectrophotometric peaks and provides the basis for a convenient assay to measure free and bound amounts in the presence of serum albumin and competitive drugs. The results obtained showed that the probe and cephalosporin compete for the same binding site on human serum albumin; thus the probe can be used to gauge the displacement of cephalosporins from human serum albumin. The data were interpreted on the basis of theory of multiple equilibria. The number of binding sites of human serum albumin for 2-(4'-hydroxybenzeneazo) benzoic acid(HBAB), cephalothin and cefazoline appears to be 4. By using this technique the binding constants were found as follows: HSA-HBAB, $7.89{\times}10^{4}M^{-1}$; HSA-cephalothin, $1.09{\times}10^{3}M^{-1}$ ; HSA-cefazoline, $1.21{\times}10^{3}M^{-1}$.

  • Aggregation states ans electro-optic properties of a binary mixture by mixing a side chain type liquid crystalline polymer(LCP) and a low molecular weight liquid crystal(LMLC) have been studied. Side chain liquid crystalline polysiloxanes were synthesized from allyl bromide, p-hydroxy benzoic acid, p-cyanophenol, p-methoxyphenol and polysiloxanes. Low molecular weight liquid crystals were synthesized from allyl bromide, p-hydroxy benzoic acid and 4-cyano 4'-hydroxy biphenyl. And then, their properties were compared with blended liquid crystals. The thermal properties of the blended liquid crystals were evaluated using differential scanning calorimetry. The phase behavior of blended sample with temperature were also observed polarized microscope with hot stage. Thus, it seemed to us that a study of LC polysiloxanes with LMLC would be useful, especially in view of the fact that, systematic investigations have been carried out on the effects of changes in LCP/LMLC binary system on the properties of this relatively new type of liquid crystal.
